Bishop Amat beats Whittier 46-39: December was hit and miss for the Bishop Amat High School girls basketball team as it adjusted to first-year coach Treana Allen.
January has been much better.
Adrienne Franco scored 13 points and Damiana Bagues had 12 as the Lancers scored their second victory of the month with a 46-39 victory over host Whittier in a nonleague game on Thursday.
Marisa Brown also had 10 points for Bishop Amat, which improved to 7-9. Julia Ochoa had 14 points for the Cardinals, who slipped to 9-8.
“This is great,” Allen said. “I told our girls that we started the season strong, with three wins, now we’re finishing the preseason strong (with back-to-back wins in January).

La Serna girls soccer beats Los Altos 1-0: The La Serna girls soccer team wrapped up the nonleague portion of its schedule with a 1-0 road victory at Los Altos on Thursday night with the game’s only goal coming in the first half from Elizabeth Hernandez.
The Lancers (5-4-5) controlled possession for most of the first half and earned three corner kicks. However, the back line for Los Altos (5-5) held La Serna to just three shots on goal in the entire half. It was that third shot on goal when Hernandez scored.
From 10 feet outside of the box, the senior forward delivered a right-footed shot that bounced off the right post and rolled along the goal line before hitting the net on the left side of the goal.
In the first half, the Lancers had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks, while both teams put three shots on goal. La Serna saved one shot with a header right in front of the goal, while the other two were saved by Sabrina Sandoval, who earned the shutout.
