Wherever A.J. Bigornia stands on the floor, he’s a threat to score.
The Glendora High School senior showed that in a big Palomares League opener on Friday night against visiting Bonita.
The 5-foot-9 guard, one of the smallest players on the court, knocked down 3-pointers from 35 feet out, from the baseline and from the top of the key, nearly all with Bearcat players all over him. He scored 33 points, hitting six 3-pointers, to lead the Tartans to a 70-58 victory.
“The last (two years) in the Baseline League definitely helped my self-confidence because I was playing against older players and D-I prospects,” he said. “It really got me ready for this season.”
Glendora (15-2) led for all but the game’s first 2 minutes, 40 seconds. The Tartans extended that lead to as much as 12 points late in the third quarter. Bonita (13-3) whittled it down to 55-49 on an Ashton McLaurin layup. Bigornia, who was 9-of-17 from the field for the game and 6-of-11 on 3-point attempts, knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner with Tyler Poepping all over him with 3:16 to play to extend the lead back to nine points.
