The official score was the West with 10 wins and the East with four in the first of its kind San Gabriel Valley All-Star East vs. West Wrestling Classic at Bishop Amat High on Monday night.
But that wasn’t the whole story.
Almost every wrestler in the gym was glad to be involved in the initial all-star challenge event, started by Amat coach Tom Pierre.
Pierre, the SGV Coach of the Year last season, has had the idea for a while.
“I’ve been thinking about this event for the last 10 years,” Pierre said, as he was handing out T-shirts to the winners at the conclusion of the night. “It gives these kids a chance to see other top wrestlers in the valley. It turned out pretty good, considering it was a Monday night and the national football championship was on TV.
“You see a lot of valley kids competing against each other and I hope this event will grow bigger and bigger.”
In perhaps one of the best matches of the evening came in the 152-pound weight class semifinal, where Northview senior Joseph Dominquez went toe-to-toe with Charter Oak senior Antonio Zavala. Since both wrestlers were on the East side, they couldn‘t meet in the finals.
