La Puente boys soccer remains undefeated: La Puente High School third-year boys soccer coach Cesar Torrico told his team before Tuesdays’ Miramonte League matchup with Ganesha to treat the game like it was for the league title.
The Warriors, who trailed first-place Ganesha (11-3-3, 3-1) by a half game coming into the contest, did just that and defeated the host Giants 3-1, behind a two-goal performance by sophomore midfielder Daniel Lopez.
With the victory, La Puente (9-0-3, 3-0-1) takes over first place by a half game.
Ganesha’s lone tally came from midfielder Kevin Pleitez and La Puente’s third goal came from another sophomore midfielder, Marcos Picaz.
“Coming into this game we knew it was going to be a tough opponent,” said Lopez, who scored his first two goals of the season. “Ever since our (1-1) tie with Garey, we knew this was a big game. He (Torrico) said, and I quote, ‘Treat it like it’s a league championship, like it’s the last game.’”

Bishop Amat 5, Marshall 1 — Nathan DiFiori scored twice and Ralph Acosta, Arnold Fields and David Cabral each added a goal for the Lancers (6-4-0) in a nonleague victory.
GIRLS SOCCER
Covina 2, San Dimas 1 — Wendie Umanzor scored a goal for the Saints (3-9-3, 2-1), but it was not enough in the Valle Vista League loss.
Charter Oak 3, Walnut 0 — Taylor Salgado scored twice and had an assist, and Maggie Brown scored a goal for the Chargers (7-9-1, 2-1) in a Hacienda League win. Cameryn Corcan and Dayna Jaimes each had an assist.
Sierra Vista 5, Gladstone 0 — Kimberly Araujo, Giselle Garcia, Maria Hernandez, Samantha Loza and Sonia Quiroa each scored a goal to lead the Dons (12-3-1, 3-0) to the Montview League victory. Zitlali Jimenez has two assists and Araujo and Hernandez each had an assist.
GIRLS WATER POLO
Charter Oak 19, Walnut 1 — Katie Fugit had eight goals and five steals, Sarah Adams had six goals, three assists and three steals, and goalie Destiny Ramirez had 15 saves for the Chargers (13-4, 2-1) in a Hacienda League victory. Also contributing to Charter Oak’s win were Juliana Martinez, who had two goals, five assists and two steals, and Devynn Stein, who had two goals, two assists and five steals. Nikki Rubio scored the lone goal for Walnut.
Bonita 15, Ayala 14 — Amanda Legaspi had seven goals and one assist, Erin Gonzalez had three goals and one assist, and goalie Rachel Garwick had seven saves and one assist to lead the Bearcats (12-3) to their first Palomares League victory. Kierra Hemric and Kayla DeHerrera each scored twice and Claire Turner had five assists for Bonita.
