Los Altos is in the midst of a tough stretch. The Conquerors play four games this week, including Wednesday at Canyon of Anaheim, Thursday against Chino and Friday at Webb.

By the time the Conquerors complete their own tournament on Feb. 7, they will have played 22 games in the last 30 days.

“It’s not crazy at all,” coach Chris Coleman said. “The girls season is so weird in its complexion because you have Thanksgiving break and then Christmas break. The girls disappear. A lot of teams play 15 games before the new year. I did not want that. Why train so hard and then disappear for two, three weeks? You do not gain anything. You actually lose what you worked on.”

How Walnut did it: After suffering a defeat to Los Altos in the final of the Covina Tournament last month, the Walnut High School boys basketball team exacted some revenge on the Conquerors with an impressive 60-45 road victory in their first meeting in Hacienda League action Wednesday night.
The Mustangs, who were undefeated in league last year, won their fifth consecutive game to start league play this season with the help of a double-double from starting center Ryan Herrera. The 6-foot-7 senior had 17 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks, shutting down Los Altos’ pair of post players that gave Walnut (17-5. 5-0) so much trouble in the previous meeting.
“Ryan was big for us tonight,” Walnut coach Joe Khouzan said. “He was much more disciplined and held down the bottom for us. As a team, we took care of the ball a lot better this time around. We had a lot of turnovers last time, but we made some adjustments to handle their press and the team responded well to the in-game adjustments.”

LOS ANGELES –The Bishop Amat High School boys’ soccer team may not be on anyone’s radar outside of the San Gabriel Valley. Not anymore.
The undefeated Lancers, who aren’t in anyone’s top ten outside of The Tribune, including the poll that counts the most – the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 – might just creep into the conversation after a huge 1-0 Del Rey League victory over host Salesian of Los Angeles Wednesday night.
With the victory the Lancers and Cathedral are atop the league with identical records. Amat tied division 3 top-ranked Cathedral in its first league game, 4-4.
Cathedral is ranked second and Salesian fifth in Top Drawer Soccer.com’s Southern California rankings, which is a gauge of all of Southern California high school soccer.

Girls soccer
South Hills 2, Diamond Bar 0 — Alina Cobian scored twice and Alyssa Lopez recorded a shutout to lead the Huskies (12-4, 4-2) to the Palomares League victory. Hannah Shields and Arianna Vallado each had an assist for South Hills.
Chino Hills 1, Rancho Cucamonga 0 — Destiny Collins recorded a shutout and Dayna Garcia scored the winning goal for the visiting Huskies (10-5-4, 4-0-2) in a Baseline League win.
Boys soccer
Diamond Bar 8, South Hills 1 — Guy Horcasitas and Tony di Donato each scored twice to lead the Brahmas (14-3-2, 5-0-1) to the Palomares League victory. Kristian Salazar, Daniel Stelzreide, Anthony Vazquez and Mohammad Abboushi each scored a goal for Diamond Bar.
Girls Basketball
South Hills 53, Diamond Bar 46 — Denise Wang had 23 points to lead the Huskies (17-5, 5-1) to the Palomares League victory. OJ Gamboa had 17 points and Kayla Rice added 11 points for Diamond Bar (9-12, 2-4).
Walnut 58, Los Altos 51 — Walnut had 20-8 run that started in the second quarter and carried into the third to take a 42-30 lead. Los Altos got the lead down to two with two minutes left on a 3-point play by Ulani Wells. Katya Echavez from Walnut had five points in the final two minutes scoring on each of the next two possessions.
Boys Basketball
Bonita 59, Glendora 56 — Kenny Walter had 21 points for the Bearcats (17-5, 3-3) in a Palomares League win.
Charter Oak 58, Chino 46 — Amier Thomas had 26 points and Chase Evans added 10 points for the Chargers (6-11, 1-4) in a Hacienda League victory.
Diamond Bar 54, South Hills 28 — Tyler Ginyard had 14 points, six rebounds and four assists and Tyler Peterson had 11 points, six rebounds and five steals to lead the Brahmas (12-10, 3-3) to the Palomares League win.
Rowland 58, Northview 53 — Jesus Jr Hernandez had 24 points and Derek Ohara added 19 points for the Raiders (14-6, 4-1) in a Valle Vista League victory.
San Dimas 60, Wilson 58 — Omar Nasri had 32 points and 18 rebounds and Ryan Ocampo had 13 points and three assists and three rebounds to lead the Saints (8-13, 2-3) in overtime to the Valle Vista league victory. Also contributing to San Dimas’s victory was Donnell Leffridge who had 10 points and four rebounds. Kyle Price had 17 points and Brandon Jon had 11 points for Wilson.
Diamond Ranch 70, West Covina 56 — Roman Silva had 19 points and four blocks and Dean Waltz added 12 points to lead the Panthers (13-7, 4-1) to the Hacienda League victory.

East Notebook: The size advantage typically enjoyed by the East team in the annual SGV Hall of Fame All-Star Game for high school football seniors is alive and well. Only this year it extends beyond the offensive and defensive lines.
Sure, the West is better equipped this year to handle the East’s physicality at the line of scrimmage, but what about on the outside where matching up to specimens like Etiwanda tight end Michael Neal could be a major problem?
“He’s going to probably give the West squad a little bit of difficulty,” East head coach Steve Randall of Colony High said. “He’s something else. At Colony, we don’t really impress that many people with our size, but I’m impressed by the overall speed and size on this team.”
Kickoff for the 36th renewal of the local rivalry between East and West is 7:30 p.m., on Friday night at West Covina High.

Damien’s Jeremy Hemsley may go down as one of the San Gabriel’s Valley’s all-time best, right there with Tracy Murray, Casey Jacobsen, Cameron Murray, Keith Van Horn, Grant Jerrett, etc., as the Valley’s all-time greats. But on this night in the Northview basketball tournament in December, Glendora’s Brandon Brothers had a crossover and bucket that he can talk about forever … Enjoy it, because that will probably never happen again to No. 42.

Damien, trailing 62-49 entering the fourth, scored the final quarter’s first 12 points and kept it going to pull out a 76-72 victory over Rancho Cucamonga to improve to 18-2 and 5-0 in the Baseline. All-everything Jeremy Hemsley led the way with 28 points, including 16 in the decisive fourth quarter. Malik “Will Give You” Fitts added 25 and Justin Hemsley had 10 boards for the Spartans, who have beaten Etiwanda, Chino Hills and now Rancho Cucamonga during its impressive 10-game win streak.
