FOOTBALL STORY: Signing Day surprises usually don’t make their way to these parts, but there were two big ones Wednesday as local high school football players made their college destinations known.
The first came from Glendora offensive tackle Ben Northup, who was a Hawaii commit all the way into Wednesday morning before switching to Fresno State. The second was from Muir wide receiver/defensive back Taeon Mason, who switched from Washington State to San Jose State late Tuesday. Mason was also at one time a USC commit.
For both players, a late-stage recruiting visit last weekend was enough to sway them.

STORY ON OTHERS: Michaela Cappello has watched her fellow seniors mull over and worry about college applications and transcripts of late.
The Arcadia High senior, like 15 other San Gabriel Valley-area soccer players, has not had that worry in months. The players had made their collegiate decisions, for the most part, months ago. So Wednesday was a day of relief and relaxation as each officially committed to four-year programs.
“I see them struggle with it,” Cappello said of her classmates on choosing and waiting for schools. “I know I’ve been free with it. I loved the opportunity and signing feels so good.”
Football took center stage on Wednesday’s signing day, but athletes in soccer and boys water polo were able to officially make their decisions final, too.
“It’s a pretty awesome feeling to know it’s official,” said Los Altos soccer player Sabrina Delgado, who signed with Division I Cal State Bakersfield. “It was the next step. The final step and a big weight off my shoulders.”

AntonioHullSIGNING PREVIEW: The decision was easy for Diamond Bar High School football player Antonio “Noodles” Hull. The road getting there was not.
Hull, like a select group of other local football standouts, will partake in national signing day festivities for football recruits on Wednesday. He will sign with Wyoming marking the end of a long and tumultuous journey to reach his goal of playing at the next level.
“There were some days when I felt like it was over and I was going to have to take the JC (junior college route),” Hull said. “And then there were some days where I knew I was going to make it. I had a good supporting cast around me to bring my spirit up and keep me going forward into the next day.”
Hull lost all but one game of his junior season after being declared ineligible by CIF for what was ruled to be a athletically motivated transfer from West Covina, where Hull played the first two years of his prep career, to Diamond Bar.
