Sierra Vista’s Giselle Garcia scores lone goal to lift Dons to 1-0 win over Duarte and eighth straight league title

donsSTORY: The Duarte girls soccer team snapped Sierra Vista’s 65-game league winning streak earlier in the season with a 3-2 victory over the Dons and had an opportunity to show it was no fluke in the rematch on Thursday for the Montview League title.
The Falcons certainly came to play, but Sierra Vista midfielder Giselle Garcia ended all the drama with the lone goal in the second overtime to give the Dons a 1-0 victory and their eighth straight league title.
Falcons goalkeeper Alexa Moreno had played a wonderful game to that point, but she stepped off her line for a moment and Garcia made her pay, floating a left-footed shot over her head from 20 yards for the game winner in the 96th minute.
Garcia’s eighth goal improved the Dons to 18-4-1 and 9-1 while Duarte, which just needed a tie to enter next week’s CIF-SS Division 6 playoffs as the league champion, dropped to 12-5-1 and 8-2.
“We had possession the whole game we just couldn’t get a goal,” Garcia said. “I just took a shot. Our coach (Steve Jimenez) always says just take a shot because you never know when it will go in.”
