Bonita, Covina, Los Altos, Workman, Bishop Amat all open boys basketball playoffs with first round wins

Workman beats neighboring San Dimas in opener: The No. 11 seed Workman High School boys basketball team saw a 22-point fourth-quarter lead be nearly completely erased, but held on to defeat San Dimas 68-60 to advance the second round of the CIF-SS Division 4AA playoffs on Wednesday night.
The Saints (11-16) trailed 58-36 at the start of the fourth quarter, but went on a 24-5 run to cut the lead to 63-60 in the final two minutes of the game.

South El Monte falls short: Legendary La Canada High boys basketball coach Tom Hofman liked what he saw so much from his team in the first quarter on Wednesday that he wished aloud that he could bottle some of it for use later in the playoffs.
The Spartans erupted in the first quarter, knocking down nine 3-pointers, and never looked back in a 69-33 win over South El Monte in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 3A playoffs.
“That might be a school record for points in a quarter, it’s close,” Hofman said. “It’s definitely a school record for points in a first quarter. We were really on fire. We took good shots and made them. It would be nice to bottle that.”

Bonita cruises past Sulatana: Sultana boys basketball coach Jay Harrie thought his team was in good position when it finished the first quarter tied with third-seeded Bonita. But the Bearcats dominated after that and pulled away for an 86-56 win in a first-round CIF Southern Section Division 3AA contest Wednesday night at Bonita.
Bishop Amat 44, Shadow Hills 40 — Josh Andarza had 11 points and Christian Mora had nine points to lead the Lancers (20-8) to the Division 3A first-round victory.
Diamond Ranch 94, Norte Vista 48 — Chidi Udengwu had 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists and Roman Silva had 18 points, eight rebounds and three blocks for the Panthers (18-8) in a Division 3AA first-round playoff win. Tyler McLean had nine assists and nine rebounds for Diamond Ranch.
