LA VERNE — That was quick.
Damien’s first trip to the CIf-Southern Section Open Division boys basketball playoffs, which takes the best 16 teams in the section and drops them into a super division, was not what it hoped it would be.
Orange Lutheran, seeded 12th, stunned fifth-seed Damien 60-59 in the first round on Thursday, sending Damien to the consolation bracket where it will face Alemany on the road Wednesday.
Orange Lutheran’s CJ Hankins knocked in a team-high 20 points, scoring 16 in the second half and Keisean Lucier-South finished with 17 points for the Lancers (22-5), who will take on Corona Centennial in the quarterfinals.
How I would change the format: I love the concept of the Open Division, but if you’re going to sacrifice the best teams in all 11 divisions for our enjoyment, make it worth it for them and us. In a traditional 32 team bracket, it takes 5 games to win a championship. What I would do is split the 16 Open teams into four groups of four. Just like the World Cup seed four 1s, 2s, 3s and 4s, put them in a hat and have a draw to formulate four even groups. We would be arguing who’s in the group of death. Each group plays three round-robin games to determine a group winner. Think of the excitement of watching the best go at for at least three games. This makes going to the Open worth it for everyone, especially the teams selected. Who wants to lose and go to a consolation bracket anyway? And it would guarantee that all of the teams get at least one home game, which they deserve. The Group winners then go to the Final Four with two games to determine a champion. Just like a 32-team bracket, it still takes five games to win it and it’s much more exciting for everyone.
I would split the Open Division to four groups of four; round-robins with group champs going to Final Four. More games, money, excitement.

Open Division teams sacrifice divisional titles for our enjoyment, so why not guarantee at least three games with round-robin format.
