Boys Basketball playoffs: Glendora, Walnut advance; Bonita, Los Altos, Diamond Ranch move to quarterfinals

TARTANS WIN: Glendora played without guard A.J. Bigornia, who is battling a calf injury, but Robert Miller stepped up and poured in a game-high 24 points and Brandon Brothers finished with 17 points to lead the Tartans to a 62-42 Division 2AA first-round win over Saugus. Watch highlights and listen to what Miller, Brothers and center Joseph Alvarez said afterward.

Tartans get it done: The Glendora High School boys basketball team showed why it is seeded No. 2 in the CIF-SS Division 2AA playoffs by defeating Saugus 62-42 on Friday night to set up a second-round matchup with No. 15 Woodbridge on Tuesday.
The Tartans (24-4) held Saugus (13-16) to just four points in the first quarter before the offense got going, scoring 54 points in the final three quarters.
“The score was stuck at 3-2 for quite a few minutes. We came out really amped and not as relaxed offensively as we needed to be,” Glendora head coach Michael LeDuc said, “but that really helped us defensively. When we got into the flow of the game, we started slowing things down and relaxed and the shots started going down.”

Walnut wins easy: Eighth-seeded Walnut jumped out to a quick 13-point lead and went on to rout Paloma Valley 90-58 in a first-round game of the boys CIF Southern Section Division 1A basketball playoffs on Friday night.
The Mustangs (24-5) will face the winner of the game between Mayfair and Camarillo on Tuesday at a site to be determined.
“We had a great crowd tonight,” first-year Mustang coach Joe Khouzam said. “They got everyone pumped up and came out and started hitting some shots. Shooting is contagious and we got hot early.”

West Covina gets rolled: La Mirada High School looked every bit like the top seed in the CIF Southern Section Division 2A boys basketball playoffs Friday.
Anthony Newman scored 32 points, including nine 3-pointers, and the Matadores smothered visiting West Covina, 70-23, in their postseason opener.
Kendall Lauderdale added 16 points for La Mirada, which improved to 24-4 and will travel to Agoura, a 66-38 winner over Rio Mesa, in Tuesday’s second round. AJ Garcia had six points to lead the Bulldogs, who finished 12-16.
