ALEXA RUIZ WINS IT FOR AMAT: Bishop Amat senior Jamie Peters huddled her team together before Tuesday’s CIF-Southern Section Division 2 second-round girls soccer game against visiting Murrieta Mesa, telling her teammates to make them (Mesa) leave the field crying.
Junior Alexa Ruiz did just that.
Ruiz scored in the eighth minute of sudden-death overtime, lifting Bishop Amat to a 2-1 victory over Mesa with a Golden Goal in the 88th minute, sending the Lancers to Thursday’s quarterfinals.
Ruiz, who scored the game winner in sudden death in a 2013 divisional quarterfinal at Diamond Bar that helped lead to the Lancers to their last CIF championship, said being at the right place at the right time is a matter of will.

South El Monte comes up short: Katy Coats had a clear shot at goal in a tie game with seven minutes to play. Until Maranatha High School teammate Ivahnna Espinoza got in the way.
The sophomore soccer player’s shot, in a CIF-Southern Section Division 6 second-round game against visiting South El Monte, rebounded off Espinoza and the Minutemen were eventually called for offsides.

Sierra Vista 4, Rialto 2 — Maria Hernandez scored twice and Giselle Garcia and Zitlali Jimenez each scored a goal for the Dons (20-4-1) in a Division 6 second-round playoff victory.
