beccalowdenBIG DAY FOR AREA ATHLETES: Several area athletes signed National Letters of Intent this week during April’s signing period, including five athletes from Glendora High School, who celebrated in a signing ceremony at the school on Wednesday.
Tartans girls volleyball standout Becca Lowden was named the 2014 Tribune player of the year after an incredible fall season. She signed with Vanguard.
The outside hitter led the Palomares League in four of six categories and was ranked in the top 10 in every statistical category except for setting.

“For us, it was a good time for league restructuring (from the Baseline to the Palomares league),” said Glendora coach Clara Lowden, Becca’s mother. “It gave the kids more confidence.”
Lowden had 332 kills, nearly twice as many as any of her teammates.
“She was somebody we could depend on,” Clara Lowden said. “Becca just put it away.”
Lowden led the Tartans in digs with 367 and in serving percentage, 95.4. She was among the team leaders in blocks, aces and serves-received.
Football’s early signing period was in February, but Glendora’s Collin Grady took his time and signed with Western New Mexico.
The safety/receiver had two interceptions for the Tartans this past season while also collecting 87 tackles.
Tartans senior infielder Kaylee Wallingford is in the middle of the season, but she can play without the
stress of what’s next after deciding on Marymount California University to continue her softball career.
The Tartans’ Veronica Smeltzer, a standout in field hockey, turned her sport into a college scholarship with South Carolina’s Limestone College.
Sydney Pink, a high jump specialist in track, is headed to Sacramento State.
On Tuesday, Bishop Amat held a signing ceremony at the school to celebrate four athletes moving on.
In baseball, two Lancers pitchers signed on the dotted line. Isaac Archer signed with UC Riverside while 6-foot-5 standout Max Jones signed with New York’s Hamilton College.
One of the area’s best cross country and track standouts for the past four years, Lancers senior Emily Hubert, signed with Loyola Marymount.
Los Altos girls soccer player Danielle Verduzco also made her college choice official, signing with Biola in a group ceremony in front of all her teammates.
