Wednesday Recap: Covina’s Princess Nava throws a gem in 5-1 softball stunner over D-5 No. 1 San Dimas to take over VVL

Covina 5, San Dimas 1 — Princess Nava was the winning pitcher and went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Samantha Medrano went 3 for 4 with an RBI for the Colts (12-6, 3-0) in a Valle Vista League stunner over San Dimas, who was ranked No. 1 in this week’s CIF-SS Division 5 poll.
The victory moved Covina (12-6, 3-0) in to sole possession of first in the VVL while dropping the Saints to 11-9 and 2-1.
Covina’s Ricki Corvera had a double and Ali Lenoue and Lauren Bodden each had an RBI.
Edgewood 21, Pomona 0 — Freshman Kennedy Cuevas pitched a shutout, Idalis Jimenez went 4 for 4 with three homers, including a grand slam, and Taylor Lara also had a grand slam for the Lions (12-0, 8-0) in a Miramonte League victory.
South Hills 12, Ayala 1 — Natalie Lugo was the winning pitcher, striking out 13, and the Huskies had 12 hits for the Palomares League victory. Maria Tovar went 2 for 3 with a homer, a double and five RBIs, Christie Aguilar hit a homer and had three RBIs, Natalia Bocanegra went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Caitlyn VanHemelryck had two hits with a double and knocked in a run and Quinn DeAvila had two singles and an RBI for South Hills (13-5, 2-1).
Gabrielino 18, Rosemead 2 — Amanda Morales pitched six innings, striking out six, and had a triple and two singles and Jamie Hammon hit a homer and had three RBIs for the Eagles (4-5-1, 4-2) in a Mission Valley League victory. For Gabrielino, Angie Gonzales had a double and three singles and Sarah Hauffen had four runs scored.
Arroyo 3, El monte 1 — Dominica Mendoza pitched six innings, striking out five and Rebecca Barber went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI to lead the visiting Knights (12-3, 5-1) to the Mission Valley League victory. Danielle Dominguez went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Madison Reyna knocked in a run for Arroyo. El Monte’s Melanie Urbina went 2 for 2 with an RBI.
Glendora 3, Claremont 0 — Cambria Keefer was the winning pitcher, striking out nine, and Kayla Sok, Kaylee Wallingford and Randi Farricker each homered to lead the Tartans (16-5, 3-0) to the Palomares League victory. Amanda Woods, Wallingford and Farricker each had a double. Claremont’s Chloe Amarilla struck out eight and Loni Moreno had a double.

Baseball
Claremont 1, Diamond Bar 0 — Tyler Witt pitched a complete game, allowing one hit and striking out 10, and had a double for the Wolfpack (7-9, 2-6) in a Palomares League win. Ryan Betancourt went 2 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI for Claremont.
Glendora 5, Ayala 4 — Griffen Herrera hit a two-run homer, Raymond Romo had an RBI single and Nick Kaye had a double for the Tartans (16-6, 4-4) in a Palomares League victory. Matthew Acosta went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs for Ayala (13-8, 6-2).
Gabrielino 10, Rosemead 2 — Ronnie Welslin pitched a complete game, striking out six, and Brandon Lara-Mack went 2 for 3 with a home run, a double and five RBIs to lead the Eagles (5-9, 4-2) to the Mission Valley League win.
West Covina 7, Chino 2 — Alex Carrillo was the winning pitcher, striking out 12 and Andrew Sanchez had two hits and two RBIs for the Bulldogs (10-10, 4-4) in a Hacienda League win. Eddie Vasquez and Eric Vasquez each had two hits and an RBI for West Covina.
Boys golf
Damien 194, Claremont 202 — Jordan DellaGiustina shot a 1-over 35 to earn medalist honors, leading the Spartans (9-3) to the nonleague victory at Marshall Canyon. Claremont’s Jonathan Yoo and Damien’s Nowndale Sale and Gabriel Sosa shot a 37.
St. Paul 254, Bishop Amat 262 — Brandon Baucom shot a 44 and Jason Gras shot a 45 for the Swordsmen (10-7, 5-3) in the Del Rey League match at Westridge Golf Course. Donovan Delgado shot a 42 for the Lancers (12-5, 6-2).
Boys Track and Field
La Puente 84, Bassett 43 — Jordan Fisher won the 100 meter (55.48 seconds) and the 200 (23.57) to lead the Warriors to the Miramonte League victory. Pedro Hernandez won the 100 high hurdles (17.57), Raul Christian won the 400 (55.48), Draven Puente won the 300 high hurdles, Jose Perez won the 3200 (10.37), Ronnie Morales won the discus throw (121-7.5), Raul Montiel won the shotput (42-4) and Jovanny Gonzalez won the long jump (18 ft) for La Puente. Basset’s Jose Bermudez won the high jump (5 ft) and the triple jump (36 ft), Manuel Fernandez won the 1,600 meter (4:49), Hector Dorado won the 800 (2:10).
Girls Track and Field
La Puente 68, Bassett 58 — Marlen Herrera won the 1,600 meter (5:49) and the 800 (2:38) and Yazmine Valencia won the 400 (1:07) and the 200 (28.31) to lead the Warriors to the Miramonte League victory. Also contributing to La Puente’s win were Kassandra Murillo who won the 3,200 (13:23), Jocelyn Figuero who won the shotput (26 ft) and Lizette Avina who won the discus throw (76-1). Karla Felix-Soto won the high jump (4 ft), the long jump (14ft) and the triple jump (25 ft), Victoria Cu won the 100 (14.17) and Araceli Perez won the 300 high hurdles (55.11) for Bassett.
