South Hills has struggled so much to score runs to complement its dominant pitching staff that coach Darren Murphy couldn’t care less how it pushes runs across.
It took four walks and three Glendora errors for the Huskies to score four runs in the third inning on Tuesday, and that was the difference in a crucial 5-4 victory for South Hills to move it a half-game ahead of Glendora for first in the Palomares League with one to play.
“You can’t be picky,” said Murphy, whose Huskies had only three hits. “We’re not really looking for style runs, we’re looking for just runs. There’s been some big scores, some low scores, but it’s the team that bounces back and does what it has to do that’s going to win this thing.”
South Hills (19-7-1, 9-4-1) knew going into the final week before the playoffs it would need a sweep over Glendora (21-7, 9-5) to win the league title. The Huskies’ victory sets the stage for Thursday, when they meet the Tartans again at Glendora for the outright league title.
