DAMIEN VOLLEYBALL ADVANCES TO FINALS: The Damien boys volleyball team wasn’t about to let a seven-point deficit get between them and the school’s first appearance in a CIF-SS title match.
fter comfortably winning the first two games 25-17, 25-19 against Santa Fe, the Spartans found themselves down in the third. They dug deep and won a stirring final game 29-27, the final point coming on a block by junior Michael Spinney on Santa Fe’s Boris Kortscheff.

DAMIEN ADVANCES TO FACE GLENDORA: Damien High School’s baseball team won five of its last six Baseline League games to make Wednesday’s Division 2 wild-card playoff game.
The Spartans (11-14), led by sophomore Isaiah Paige, kept it rolling.Paige pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings, scattering three hits, and drove in both runs in Damien’s 2-1 win over visiting Burbank (12-13).
“We pitched well and defended well,” Damien coach Andy Nieto said. “These kids have been punched in the mouth this year quite a few times and I don’t think there are many teams that are as battled-tested as we are.”
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Garrett Weiss led off with a single to left field on a seven-pitch at bat. Harrison Spohn sacrificed Weiss over to second, and Paige drove him home after Nieto rolled the dice and called for a Weiss steal of third.
