WALNUT’S KAYLA RICHARDSON DOMINATES: Kayla Richardson admits that she was not happy running a lot of 400-meter races this season.
The Walnut High School junior is complaining no more. She used that two-curve experience to claim CIF-Southern Section Division 1 championships in both the 100 and 200 on Saturday afternoon at Cerritos College.
I think it helped me a lot mentally and physically,” she said. “My times were just average, but those races really helped me with my finish.”

DAMIEN STUNNER: In the shocker of all shockers, Damien rallied with two runs in the seventh inning to stun third-seed Glendora 8-7 in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs. It was tied 6-6 going to the seventh, Damien scored twice to go up 8-6 and Glendora tried to rally back, scoring to make it 8-7 with runners on second and third with two outs, but Damien got out of it to complete the miracle comeback. Damien, which needed to win a wild card on Wednesday just to get here, trailed 6-1 in the third against Tartans ace Austin Isenhart and somehow rallied back. Incredible. Call it the magic of first-year Spartans coach Andy Nieto, who won his fourth championship last year with Bishop Amat. With South Hills also losing, if Bonita doesn’t beat Cajon on Saturday, the Palomares will have gone 0-3 while the Baseline goes 3-0. Another wow.

SOUTH HILLS KNOCKED OUT — South Hills’ futile offense caught up with it in a 4-1 loss to Rio Mesa in Friday’s Division 2 first round game. The fourth-seed Huskies entered the seventh trailing 4-0 with only one hit off Rio Mesa pitcher Jacob Flores. The Huskies tried to rally, managing two hits in the seventh and getting a walk with the bases loaded to break the shutout and bring the go-ahead run to the plate, but a pop out ended the game.South Hills pitcher Gavin Velasquez was cruising along and got the first two outs in the sixth, but after back-to-back walks he was pulled and the rally continued with three hits and four runs — all with two outs.

Sierra Vista 4, Victor Valley 3 — Angelica Ochoa hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth to lead the Dons (16-6) into the second round of the CIF-SS Division 5 playoffs. Ochoa also pitched a complete game, striking out eight. Sierra Vista’s Lyndsi King and Abby Cardova combined for three RBIs. Sierra Vista will host Louisville on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

WHY ARE SWIMMERS SKIPPING THE STATE MEET: The inaugural CIF State Swimming and Diving Championships is akin to senior ditch day.
Only a select few students will show up.That is what is apparently happening at the inaugural statewide swim meet, which began Friday at Clovis West High School. Of the 44 CIF-Southern Section champions, only 23 will compete in the two-day meet, which had qualifying on Friday and the finals are on Saturday.
“High school swimming is like a different sport,” said Saugus High School’s Abbey Weitzeil, who set high school national records in the 50 and 100 freestyles last week in the CIF-SS Division 1 finals. “Its not really my focus; it’s just fun. I have bigger things to think about this summer.”
The problem appears to be a matter of scheduling.
“It’s a tough time,” said Pasadena’s Rose Bowl Aquatics team coach Jeff Julian. “The main issue for us is in that California that creates and extends another week of the high school season.”
The high school meets are in 25-yard pools and Southern California’s USA Swimming junior national 50-meter long course program generally begins the season with the Speedo Grand Challenge, a major national meet in Irvine this weekend.

BIG INNING HELPS WALNUT ADVANCE: Walnut High School’s dream baseball season will continue.
Cody Dye tossed a six-hit shutout and the Mustangs, fresh off winning their first league crown in two decades, took advantage of three infield RBIs in the fifth inning en route to an 8-0 victory over visiting St. Paul in a CIF Southern Section Division 3 game on Thursday.

SAN DIMAS’ LAMBERT THROWS ONE-HITTER: No one will ever accuse San Dimas baseball coach Mike Regan of taking anything for granted.His unbeaten Saints may have been opening the playoffs against a team with a losing record that was only a third-place finisher in its league, but Regan never entertained the thought of going with a pitcher other than his senior ace Peter Lambert.

SOUTH HILLS DOMINANT IN WIN: South Hills never let Pacifica of Oxnard get into the game as the Huskies scored five first-inning runs and cruised to a 15-1 five-inning mercy rule win in a CIF-Southern Section Division 2 first-round game on Thursday.
The Huskies (18-7) will play the winner of the Canyon Springs/Villa Park game Tuesday at a site to be determined.
“I told the girls that we needed to dominate early,” Huskies coach Brandon Gonzalez said. “They were never in the game and that’s what you need to do in the playoffs.”

Edgewood 14, Vista Del Lago 2 — Kennedy Cuevas was the winning pitcher and Ciara Granado went 3 for 4 with two homers, a double, six RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Lions (19-0) to the CIF-SS division 5 first-round victory. For Edgewood, Jasmine Coronel went 3 for 3 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored, and Alyssa Yanez and Sammy Alvarado combined to score five runs.
Bishop Amat 4, San Jacinto 1 — Alexis Vargas was the starting pitcher and Samaria Diaz pitched the last three innings, striking out eight to lead the Lancers (18-7) to defeat the Tigers (22-7) in a CIF-SS division 3 first-round victory. Bishop Amat’s Julia Valenzuela went 3 for 3 with an RBI and Alyssa Barrera had a double and an RBI. The Lancers will play at Burbank for the second round on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.
St. Paul 3, Don Lugo 2 — Gabby Walker was the winning pitcher, and had an RBI single to help lead the Swordsmen (21-6) to advance to the CIF-SS division 3 second-round. Also contributing to St. Paul’s victory were Niko Walker who went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and Taylor Fogle who had an RBI triple. St. Paul will play against Cerritos on Tuesday.
