Minor league baseball player David Denson, who graduated from South Hills in 2013 and was named to the Tribune all-area team, announced that he is gay in a story published in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Saturday.
Denson, who plays for the Brewers’ rookie affiliate, the Helena Brewers, told the Sentinel that his teammates supported him.
“Talking with my teammates, they gave me the confidence I needed, coming out to them,” Denson said. “They said, ‘You’re still our teammate. You’re still our brother. We kind of had an idea, but your sexuality has nothing to do with your ability. You’re still a ballplayer at the end of the day. We don’t treat you any different. We’ve got your back.’
In his senior year at South Hills, Denson batted .446 with seven home runs and 27 RBIs.
