Baseball Jacob Castillo and Tommy Acuna transfer to Bonita

San Dimas High school baseball players Jacob Castillo and Tommy Acuna, who both earned Tribune all-area honors for playing huge roles in the Saints’ dream season that saw it ranked No. 1 in the country by USA today before its undefeated season ended in the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 semifinals in a 4-1 loss to Walnut, have transferred to rival Bonita.

jacobcastilloBut get this, neither Castillo or Acuna are expected to play baseball for Bonita. Castillo and Acuna, according to sources, are likely to transfer back to San Dimas at the end of the semester, where in all likelihood they will be eligible to play for San Dimas in the spring for their senior seasons.

What happened? Or better yet, what’s going on?

The Bonita Unified school district will not comment on the reason for Acuna or Castillo’s nearby transfer to Bonita, tommyacunanor will the district comment on whether the two players were expelled or transferred for disciplinary reasons. It’s confidential.

The district also will not comment on whether the two players can return to San Dimas at semester break, or if they have intentions too. In short, there are a lot of people not talking about this on the record.

San Dimas coach Mike Regan will not comment on why two of his best players are at Bonita, or if he expects them to return. Regan referred all questions regarding both players to the school district.

acuna2With Acuna and Castillo at Bonita, you would expect that Bonita would have filed a transfer request with CIF by now if the two had any intentions of playing baseball there, but that’s not the case and Bearcats coach John Knott also will not speak about both players, who are enrolled in his school and taking classes.

It’s an interesting and developing set of circumstances that we may not get the answers to for a while or at all, but that’s the situation.

How good were both players last year on San Dimas’ 31-1 team.

Castillo, a verbal commit to San Diego State, was insane. As a pitcher he was 11-1 with a 0.43 ERA with 119 strikeouts in 82 innings. At the plate Castillo batted .341 with 16 RBIs.

Acuna, who spent his first two years at Bishop Amat before transferring to San Dimas last year, was the Saints’ best hitter. He batted .529 with 25 RBIs and 8 doubles, playing third and used as a designated hitter.
