Keppel coach resigns and investigated: A popular Mark Keppel High School girls basketball coach resigned this week as allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a female student prompted an investigation by police.
Coach Joe Kikuchi confirmed his resignation Tuesday prior to news of the investigation being made public. He said it was due to personal health reasons. Kikuchi could not immediately be reached for comment on Wednesday.
Alhambra Police Sgt. Jerry Johnson said a district administrator contacted the department’s school resource officer about the alleged relationship last Tuesday, which prompted the police department to begin conducting an investigation.

Los Altos doesn’t apologize for illegal kickoff; Refs admit mistake

Thanks to Glendora kicker Caleb Watkins for sharing. We get it Caleb. Isn’t this offside? Someone? Anyone? Maybe I don’t know football as well as I should, but I’ve never seen this before. It’s a great play if you’re allowed to block a kickoff, but you can’t. And what was Los Altos thinking? I’m not going as far as saying it’s a dirty play, but good thing they didn’t take out the kicker or this could have turned ugly.

LOS ALTOS REACTION: “First and foremost, there was zero mal-intent,” Los Altos head coach Dale Ziola said. “If you notice on the film, our kid even turned away in order to avoid Caleb.
“Here’s the thought process: Caleb is a stud. He’s got a 99-percent touch-back rate on kickoffs and kicks field goals from all over the yard. So my special teams coach goes, ‘It’s going to be a touch-back anyway, so what’s a 5-yard encroachment penalty? What if we go block the opening kickoff just to knock it down, just to get the kid to go what the heck? And that’s kinda what we did, to see if we could get in his head and rattle him the rest of the night. Obviously, it didn’t work.”
TRACY MCFATE, OFFICIALS REACTION: “It’s absolutely a encroachment penalty and it should have been called as soon as the first (Los Altos) player stepped over the 40-yard line,” McFate said. “We make no excuses. There’s three officials who should have caught it. I think it was the element of surprise.

BOYS WATER POLOBONITA 14, SAN DIMAS 6

SAN DIMAS — Bonita High School has held a competitive advantage in boys water polo over intra-district rival San Dimas over the years, and the Bearcats continued the trend Tuesday.
Mitchell Montenegro and Alex Mkrtchyan had three goals each and the Bearcats rallied for a 14-6 victory over the host Saints in a nonleague game.
Greg Fusco, Bryan Plat and Ian Schubert had two goals each for Bonita, which improved to 5-4. Robbie Simpson and James Hull had two goals each for San Dimas, which slipped to 5-5.
San Dimas looked held the early advantage, leading 3-2 after the first quarter. But Bonita put the clamps on the Saints the rest of the way, limiting San Dimas to three goals over the final three quarter to win by eight.
The key point for Bonita came in the second quarter when it scored four goals during the first five minutes to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 6-3 lead.
Bonita coach Art Villalpando: “It means a lot (to beat San Dimas). It was a nonleague game, but our schools do share a rivalry, so it’s nice to see the boys compete against someone, maybe they are not used to playing, but feel obligated to have good games (against). I felt we played well. We started out a little bit slow, but we were able to pick it up. I was real happy with that.”
Bonita’s Mitchell Montenegro: “It was a close game at the very beginning. But by the second quarter, we were able to turn it on and just dominated the rest of the game.
“We turned on our defense and they couldn’t score.”
