La Mirada wins state football title; San Marino comes up short Posted on December 20, 2015 by Fred Robledo La Mirada celebrates: The rain fell on the football field at Goodman Stadium for the first time this year, but the water couldn’t wash away the championship dreams of the La Mirada Matadores. Playing a championship game on their home field for the third consecutive week, the Matadores waited until the rain broke and then broke the game open in the second half, claiming the CIF State Division III-AA championship with a 27-3 win over Moraga Campolindo.The win was a dream come true for La Mirada head coach Mike Moschetti, who played at the school and was a CIF player of the year before going on to an NCAA career as a quarterback and a pro baseball career. San Marino comes up short: There was no fantastic finish to the best season in San Marino High School football history. The Titans’ dream of the school’s first CIF State title came crashing down at Sacramento State University on Saturday. Justin Rice rushed for 216 yards and two touchdowns and Daron Bland had two interception returns for touchdowns in the second half to lead Central Catholic of Modesto to a 56-21 victory over the Titans in the Small Schools Open Division bowl game at Hornet Stadium.
