Boys Basketball Rankings
1. Damien (14-1) — Only loss to super-shooting La Canada team, otherwise they’ve handled their business.
2. Walnut (12-2) — Took care of business in Covina tournament beating Bishop Amat in semifinals, and rival Los Altos in championship.
3. Los Altos (8-1) — Not often a team is built around a freshman, but Jarod Lucas, averaging nearly 28 points a game, is that special.
4. Diamond Ranch (7-6) — Owns wins over Price, Compton and Dominguez. Nobody, including Damien, has played a schedule this tough.
5. Bonita (8-3) — Should battle it out with Ayala and Claremont for the Palomares league title
6. Bishop Amat (11-2) — Only losses to Walnut and Bonita in Covina tournament, otherwise, they’ve played a fairly easy schedule.
7. San Dimas (7-5) — Played Walnut tough and beat Rowland in overtime. Could be Valle Vista favorites.
8. Covina (8-6) — A mix of good wins and questionable losses but should be there with San Dimas battling it out for Valle Vista.
9. Workman (6-6) — Usually better at this point, but schedule has something to do with it.
10. Diamond Bar (5-8) — Let’s just say this, they’re better than their record indicates.
Girls Basketball Rankings
1. Diamond Bar (13-2) — Great December, wins over Diamond Ranch, Chino Hills, Upland and El Dorado
2. Duarte (13-2) — Won the Azusa tournament and played power Keppel to a decent result
3. Covina (11-4) — Beat Rowland 37-23 to capture the Ontario tournament
4. St. Lucy’s (12-1) — Undefeated since season-opening loss to Charter Oak.
5. Rowland (11-2) — Won the Whittier Christian tourney and advanced to the finals in two others.
6. Glendora (10-4) — Advanced to championship of own tournament before losing to Chino Hills.
7. Walnut (8-4) — As usual, Mustangs always in the mix
8. South Hills (9-6) — Last year’s No. 1 graduated some good players, but they’re still a tough team to beat.
9. Bonita (9-7) — Should be in the Palomares league title hunt.
10t. Charter Oak (6-4) — Great win over St. Lucy’s. Should be in Hacienda playoff chase.
10t. Los Altos (8-4) — Hasn’t played the toughest schedule, but overall record is solid.
