Bishop Amat girls soccer set CIF-SS record with 21-0 victory over St. Matthias

Bishop Amat’s 21-0 girls soccer victory over St. Matthias on Thursday set a CIF-Southern Section record for most goals in a game. Bonita scored 20 against Ganesha in the 1997-98 season and La Reina scored 20 against Carpenteria in 1996-97. Twitter blew up after I posted it because of all the records you could break, not sure you want to be remembered for the biggest blowout. Before everyone jumps on Bishop Amat coach Ruben Gonzalez, important to note he was not at the game. Gonzalez is out of town receiving the Division III national junior college coach of the year award (NSCAA) after leading the Cerritos women’s team to the state title.
However, Gonzalez offered his thoughts on the record-setting blowout.
“I was surprised, you never want to win that lopsided,” said Gonzalez, who noted his JV coach was asked to coach in his absence. “I talked to my (JV) coach. He asked the referee to cut the game short with 15 minutes left in the second half and the other team did not want to cut it short.”
This brings up another question. Is it time for CIF to consider a mercy rule for soccer. After a 10 goal lead, call the game. This is a blog, tell us what you think?
