Diamond Ranch 77, Los Altos 47 — The Diamond Ranch High School boys basketball team has faced a lot of talented teams and players this season. So facing the likes of Los Altos and freshman standout Jarod Lucas was old hat.
The Panthers shut down the guard in the first half and cruised to a 77-47 Hacienda League victory on Wednesday night.
“Every year what I try to do is play the top teams in the country,” Diamond Ranch coach Eric Cooper said. “When you do that you always face similar types of players so when you get to league and the playoff, you’ve faced that, I’ll take some (losses). It helps us.”
San Dimas 56, Rowland 54 — San Dimas took over sole possession of first place in the Valle Vista League boys basketball race with a 56-54 double-overtime victory over Rowland on Wednesday night.
It was the Saints’ eighth consecutive win to give them a one-game lead over Wilson and drop the Raiders two games behind at the halfway point of league play.In a defensive battle it was only fitting that a blocked shot in the lane by the Saints’ Ronny Rafeh with two seconds left on the clock, closed out the win.
Bishop Amat 53, Salesian 38 — Harrison Kay scored 18 points and James St. Louis added 13 points to lead the Lancers (17-4, 3-2) to the Camino Real League victory. John Aguirre and Aaron Hernandez each had six points for Bishop Amat.

CIF APPROVES CHANGE: It’s a new day in the CIF Southern Section.
As many expected, Proposal SS522, which is known as the “Playoff Groupings by Competitive Equity” proposal, passed at Wednesday’s CIF-SS council meeting at the Grand in Long Beach.The proposal was approved by a vote of 74-10-1. The voters were made up of representatives from the 88 leagues in the Southern Section, as well as a handful of at-large representatives.
School enrollment size will no longer determine playoff divisiod, nor will league placement. Instead, each school in each sport will be evaluated on an annual basis by their performance over the last two years, using regular season record, strength of schedule and playoff performance to determine what division they’ll be placed in starting this for the 20-16-17 season.

AREA COACHES REACT: “I don’t think it’s so much that we weren’t in favor of it,” West Covina High School athletic director Brian Murphy said. “My perspective, and I’m not going to speak for the rest of the schools, is that I think it’s a good idea for all sports, except for football. And I don’t think we know how football is going to play out as far as how they’re going to re-division it and how they’re going to do their rankings.

BASEBALL COACHES THOUGHTS BEFORE VOTE: Lost in the shuffle of what could be a monumental moment in CIF Southern Section history when member schools vote today on a playoff grouping proposal that would drastically change the landscape of playoff divisions is the effects that the new format would have on baseball.
In football, basing playoff divisions solely on competitive equity and not leagues, signifies a sea change from the way things have always been done. In basketball, such a system is essentially already in place. But what about another major sport, baseball?

The new format will be in place beginning with the 2016-17 school year. Teams will get division assignments annually in August.

Boys Basketball
Ayala 67, Bonita 51 – Ayala High School did not have to go inside the paint to win its Palomares League showdown against host Bonita on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs only had to follow their shots.
Ayala secured 15 offensive rebounds and turned them into easy put-back baskets en route to a 67-51 victory.
“We got some rebounds and got some put-backs we normally don’t get,” Ayala coach John Mounce said. “We did not finish seven or eight times and I was about to pull my hair out. But we stayed with it.”
The Bulldogs (19-2) took control of the league race, completing the first round of league play undefeated. It was the first league loss for Bonita (17-5).
Girls soccer
Garey 4, La Puente 0 — Veronica Alvarez scored three goals and IIiana Gallegos scored a goal for the Vikings (8-5-3, 6-0) in a Miramonte League game. Goalie April Keo had four saves for Garey.
Diamond Bar 3, Ayala 2, OT — Freshman Olivia Valdivia scored the winning goal to lead the Brahmas (5-7-6, 2-3-1) to the Palomares League victory. Kayla Pak and Reena Kang each scored a goal for Diamond Bar.
South Hills 3, Glendora 0 — Skylar Robledo scored twice, Hailey Zerbel scored a goal and Goalie Alyssa Lopez had five saves for the Huskies (14-1-5, 6-0) in a Palomares League win.

Diamond Bar 5, Ayala 0 — Josh Bortis scored twice and had an assist and David Ripley, Mohamad Abboushi and Mortaza Lutfy each scored a goal for the Brahmas (14-1-6, 6-0) in a Palomares League win. Goalie Tommy Ramos had four saves and Tony di Donato, Josh Bortis, and Bruno Gamboa each had an assist for Diamond Bar.

Girls water polo
Bonita 11, Claremont 9 — Goalie Emily Zerpoli recorded seven saves, Amanda Legaspi scored four goals and Reannon Urias had three goals to lead the Bearcats (14-7, 4-1) to the Palomares League victory. Kirra Hemric and Kayla De Herrera each scored twice and Claire Turner had three assists for Bonita.

Bassett 41, Ganesha 24 — Kailey Gutierrez had 18 points and three assists, Kassandra Aguilera had 15 rebounds and two blocks and Maria Zesati had six points and 10 rebounds for the Olympians (11-3, 6-0) in a Miramonte League game.

Get a sneak preview of the High School baseball season with Bonita taking on Alta Loma in the annual Ted Persell memorial game Wednesday night at Bonita High School at 6:30 p.m. All proceeds from the game will go to Persell’s daughter Maddie’s college fund.
Ted Persell was a good friend of Bonita coach John Knott and Alta Loma coach Gilbert Aguilera. Persell was the head baseball coach at Alta Loma for ten years prior to arriving at Bonita in 2013. Unfortunately, Ted passed away December 13, 2013, and left behind his girlfriend Veronica and six-month-old daughter Maddie. Bonita is not charging admission to Wednesday’s game, but is asking for a donation for Maddie, now two years old. There also will be a 50-50 with all proceeds going to the college fund. San Dimas 66, Flintridge Prep 43 — Ronny Rafeh scored 16 points and Donnell Leffridge added 12 points for the Saints (14-6) in a SoCal Shootout victory. Dante Fregoso had 15 points for the Rebels (13-4).
