What the South Hills girls soccer team accomplished was historic, going undefeated in the Palomares League and winning the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 championship, and CIF-State Southern California Region Division III title for the first time in school history.
That’s what you call a three-peat.
When all the dust settled, South Hills finished among girls soccer’s best, finishing the season ranked seventh nationally by MaxPreps, and No. 2 in California.
At the heart of it all was a pair of seniors in Arizona State bound Hailey Zerbel and Southeast Louisiana commit Amber Marinero, who have been selected the San Gabriel Valley Tribune girls soccer players of the year for the 2015-16 season.
Zerbel, also named the Palomares League and CIF-SS Division 3 most valuable player, finished with 27 goals and 17 assists and finished her high school career in style, scoring the game-winning goals in the Southern California Division III regional semifinals and finals. She scored the sudden-death winner in a 2-1 semifinal win over El Dorado, and scored with seven minutes left to lead South Hills to the 2-1 regional championship over San Luis Obispo.
“From the beginning we just wanted to win a CIF championship,” Zerbel said. “We never thought of winning a state championship. Beating El Dorado again in the semifinals made it that more real we could be a state championship team. It feels amazing and indescribable.”
Marinero, who finished with 27 goals and 16 assists, was the Huskies’ most clutch player during the CIF-SS Division 3 title run, scoring eight goals, which included a pair of hat tricks, scoring three in a 7-0 win over Paramount and three in a close 4-3 quarterfinal win over Cypress.
Marinero, named to the Palomares and CIF-SS Division 3 first team, saved her best for the championship, scoring both goals in a 2-1 victory over Yorba Linda for the CIF-SS Division 3 title.
“After four years, this is what we worked for,” Marinero said.

Coach of the year
Scott Mocabee, South Hills

From nearly the beginning, the South Hills girls soccer team was ranked No. 1 in the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 polls, and that bullseye was something Huskies coach Scott Mocabee both welcomed and feared.
When the postseason finally arrived after going undefeated in the Palomares League, the Huskies were ready and their longtime coach finally got to enjoy all the gatorade showers by leading his team to the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 championship and CIF-State Southern California Division III regional title for the first time in school history.
Mocabee, who was named the CIF-SS Division 3 coach of the year, also has been named the San Gabriel Valley Tribune girls soccer coach of the year for the 2015-16 season.
It was an incredible run from a team that never trailed in the section or state playoffs and that gutted out two sudden-death overtimes to prevail and accomplish their goals.
“We’re excited, it’s been a really, really long road,” Mocabee said. “We talked about it, how this journey began and how far it came, and for it to finish like this was exciting.
“I’m proud, just so extremely proud of the hard work they put in this year to accomplish all we did. It was the perfect way to finish.”

Bishop Amat baseball nearly perfect in 8-0 win over La Salle

Amat routs La Salle: It’s probably still too early in the season to say the Bishop Amat High School baseball was in a must-win situation heading in Tuesday’s Del Rey League showdown with La Salle.
But there’s no doubt that Amat could have used a shot in the arm after a rough start to the season. The Lancers got just that when pitcher Diego Barrera tossed a one-hitter and Torreahno Sweet went 4-for-5 with two runs scored in a 8-0 win at Arcadia County Park.
“We’ve played a tough schedule,” Bishop Amat coach Joe Hoggatt said. “That’s not an excuse for winning and losing, but there is a process to it. We’ve been getting better and better. It was good to see the guys reap the benefits of what they’ve been needing to do.

Boys Soccer All-Area Team: Gladstone’s Alan Piceno named player of the year; Covina’s Jonathan Ortiz coach of the year

picenoBoys Soccer Player of the Year: Alan Piceno, Gladstone, Sophomore, Forward
Gladstone boys soccer was buried in fourth in the Montview League a year ago and finished with a .500 record, which for the Gladiators, is fairly typical, especially in a league dominated by Sierra Vista and Baldwin Park over the years.
But out of nowhere came Gladstone and super sophomore Alan Piceno, who scored 25 goals to lead the Gladiators to an undefeated run and the Montview League title, finishing 10-0 in league.
And the Gladiators weren’t done, advancing to the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 quarterfinals for the first time ever, surviving a penalty-kick victory over Paloma Valley in the first round, followed by a dramatic 2-1 victory in sudden death over Valencia to reach the quarterfinals, where South Torrance finally ended the Gladiators’ season with a 2-1 victory.
For Piceno’s efforts in leading his team, he has been selected the San Gabriel Valley Tribune’s boys soccer player of the year for 2015-16.
“He’s an incredible player,” Gladstone coach Tom Mann said. “We might lose him (to an academy team) next year, but what a thrill he gave us along with the rest of our guys. We’re going to remember this season for a long time.”
Mann knew he had a talent in Piceno, but he was equally impressed with his attitude.
“I’m one of those coaches tough on discipline and when you’re late to a practice, you run eight laps,” Mann said. “Alan was a few minutes late to our first practice and I told him he has to run. He didn’t complain for a second, he ran his eight laps, came back to the team and was ready to go. That’s when I knew I had something special and he was on time and was a real leader the rest of the year.”

ortizCoach of the year: Jonathan Ortiz, Covina
All Covina’s first-year coach did was lead the Colts to the CIF-Southern Section Division 6 semifinals for the first time in school history, finishing with an impressive 17-4-3 record. For his efforts, Ortiz has been selected the San Gabriel Valley Tribune boys soccer coach of the year.
Covina won the Valle Vista league title for a second consecutive season, but this year the Colts finished undefeated in league with a 9-0-1 mark.
In the Division 6 playoffs, Covina knocked off Whitney 4-1 followed by a second-round win over Moreno Valley 3-2. It got better for the Colts knocking off traditional power La Canada, 2-1, in the quarterfinals before bowing out to Desert Mirage, 4-1 in the semifinals.
