Sierra Vista 5, Gladstone 0 — Mario Huizar pitched a one-hitter and Daniel Lona went 4 for 4 with four RBIs for the Dons (15-1, 9-0) in a Montview League game.
South Hills 13, Diamond Bar 2 — Brandon Dieter was the winning pitcher and went 3 for 3 with a triple and four RBIs for the Huskies (14-7, 8-1) in a Palomares League victory. Chris Moya went 3 for 3 with a double and two runs scored and Quinn Cotter had a double and four RBIs for South Hills.
Bassett 6, Garey 3 — Christian Trujillo was the winning pitcher, Dru Thompson went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI and Matthew Robles went 3 for 4 with a double to lead the Olympians (6-9, 5-4) to the Miramonte League victory.
Baldwin Park 8, Azusa 3 — Matthew Wells went 2 for 3 with an RBI, Francisco Ruiz went 3 for 4 and Andrew Barboza and Freddy Quintana both had two RBIs for the Braves (6-5, 4-4) in a Montview League game.
Softball
Edgewood 19, La Puente 0 — Kennedy Cuevas was the winning pitcher, striking out 10 and Sammy Alvarado and Idallis Jimenez both homered for the Lions (12-1, 8-0) in a Miramonte League victory.
“I thought it was a total team effort,” Bearcats coach John Knott said. “I’m really proud of the way our kids played today. Our guys swung the bat well, we made the plays defensively and, obviously, Nate (Schneider) did a stellar job throwing strikes and changing speeds.”

“I didn’t believe it” were the words Baldwin Park junior wrestler McKayla Loza (172 Ib) said to herself when she beat the #1 ranked wrestler at Nationals in Oklahoma City.
It did happen for Loza and now she is on her way and is ranked #1. Loza pinned the National Champion from Kansas in a duals match.
“It didn’t hit me until I got the medal,” Loza said. “I was shocked.”
Loza also took third at Nationals in the individual round. She beat a wrestler from Wisconsin.
Since her impressive day at Nationals Loza has been getting offers from different colleges, but she does not want to know what colleges until it is over.
Loza doesn’t want to know what colleges are interested in her talent, because it makes her nervous but according to her mother there have been five colleges but according to her coaches there has been at least 10 offers. But she will not make any decisions or discuss anything until it is all said and done she wants to stay focus.
You don’t lose Tyler Vaughns, Trevon Sidney, Damian Garcia, Torreahno Sweet, Matt Brayton, Steven Lopez, William Kelly, Kai Higgins, Xavier Chavez and more and expect to advance to the Division 1 semifinals for the third straight year. This will probably be coach Steve Hagerty’s most difficult challenge since taking over in 2008. Hags has never had a losing season, but this fall could be it. Don’t fool yourself, this isn’t a reload, it’s a rebuild and there’s probably nobody better than Hags and his great staff to take this on, but get ready for some growing pains. At best I’ve got them going 1-2 against Mater Dei, Servite and JSerra, with Mater Dei a possible blowout loss in the home opener. They should beat St. Paul no matter who they put on the field, but in league, I’m guessing they go 2-4 and miss the playoffs. So my overall prediction for 2016 is Bishop Amat, 4-6.

New South Hills High School football coach Matt Bechtel isn’t wasting any time as he tries to return the Huskies to Southland prominence.
Bechtel has loaded his coaching staff with a mix of holdovers from last year, including former head coach Albert Rodriguez. He’s also made the entire defensive coaching staff be comprised of coaches from Chino Hills, where 
Bechtel was head coach the past three years.
And then there’s the weight room, which Bechtel has made his project to be what he calls a “Division 1 weight room.”
“There does need to be a culture change here,” Bechtel said. “I say that because the group of kids here now don’t remember that South Hills won nine league titles in the 2000s. They don’t remember there were four CIF titles in the 2000s. For kids today, that seems like forever ago.”
The Huskies went 4-7 last season, making the playoffs because they were competitive in the Palomares League after a rugged nonleague schedule. In 2014, South Hills won the league championship, so Bechtel didn’t exactly inherit a downtrodden situation.
But compared to the powerhouse teams under former head coach Steve Bogan, the recent product hasn’t been up to historical standards. Bechtel, with his offensive flare and ability to develop quarterbacks, looks like the perfect hire to light things up.
South Hills will have four quarterbacks competing for the starting job when spring practice next week. Bechtel said that incoming freshman Khalil Ali, a youth football standout, is going to be in that mix and looks headed toward a bright future.
Then there’s the hopeful arrival of Jonathan Vaughns, who is the latest edition to lineage of Vaughns brothers who have starred at local schools. The most recent being Tyler Vaughns, who played at Bishop Amat and is headed to USC as a receiver.
Bechtel is uncertain whether the youngest Vaughns will be attending South Hills, but thinks there’s a good chance. If he does, then South Hills has arguably the top freshman class around. And that comes on top of a frosh team last year that went 9-1 and the one before it that when 8-2.
Here’s the prize everyone in the Valley wants. What’s interesting is that you think he would naturally follow his brother Tyler Vaughns, who just finished a stellar career at Bishop Amat. But word is Amat is probably not in the plans. If he doesn’t go to South Hills, St. John Bosco is a more likely landing spot. — Fred Robledo

GABRIELINO 208, MARSHALL 248 — Michael Lam shot a 37 for the Eagles (11-1-1, 8-0) in a Mission Valley League match at Eaton Canyon par 35. Cyrus Lam shot 40, Nathan Duong and Isaac Lam both shot a 43 and Ryan Tran shot 45 for Gabrielino.
