Walnut Boys win Division 3 title: It all came down to misfortune.Walnut High School won its first CIF Southern Section boys swimming championship in 24 years because of a race disqualification by Gabrielino.The Eagles won the 200 medley relay to open the Division 3 championship meet on Thursday evening at the Riverside City College’s Riverside Aquatics Complex. But the Eagles were disqualified for a swimmer leaving the blocks too early and Walnut won the race.
Damien wins Division 2 boys swimming title: Swimming was an afterthought.
When Mac Quinn enrolled at Damien High School four years ago, he was a baseball player. When he graduates later this month, he will be a CIF Southern Section championship, but not in baseball. The Spartans won the CIF-SS Division 2 swimming and diving championship on Saturday at Riverside City College’s Riverside Aquatics Complex.
“I did not swim much before my freshman year, but I felt comfortable in the water,” Quinn said. “I played water polo with my friends and decided to roll with it.
Division 4, Rowland’s Katelyn Nguyen leads Raiders: There is little room for error to maximize victories in the CIF Southern Section swimming championships. Swimmers have two chances to win CIF-SS titles in individual events and two chances in relay races.
Rowland High School’s Katelyn Nguyen came the closest to that magical finish in the Division 4 finals at Riverside City College’s Riverside Aquatics Complex on Friday evening. The freshman won the 50 and 200 freestyles and swam the anchor leg of the winning 200 free relay team. She swam the anchor leg on the second-place 400 free relay team, too.
