The 21st edition of the SGV All Star baseball game played Sunday afternoon at the University of La Verne’s Ben Hines Field featured 106 players from all over the valley from Diamond Ranch to Muir high schools in both the underclassmen and senior games.
Both games, however, were rather one-sided with the Red team defeating the Blue team 10-2 in the underclassman game and the Red team defeated the Blue team 8-2 in the senior game.
Nogales head coach Donald Montanez announced that all game proceeds will go the The City of Hope.
In a pregame ceremony, the SGV baseball coaches committee honored two long-time San Gabriel Valley coaches to be inducted into the Hall of Honor.Tony Barbone, the 16-year coach of Azusa Pacific University and current Pasadena City College athletic director, was honored for his 23 total years of coaching. An early accomplishment came at Azusa High School, where Barbone won the first CIF-SS title for the school in 1983.Also honored was Brian Miller, who is a longtime educator and former La Salle baseball coach.
In the senior game, four MVP awards were handed out. Jesse Garcia (San Dimas) was named Most Valuable Defensive player, Jonathan Sanchez (Schurr) received the Most Valuable Hitter, Nick Lodolo (Damien) was the Cory Lidle Most Valuable Pitcher and MVP of the game was Bishop Amat’s Clarence Carter. The Red team scored in four of the first five innings to take a 7-0 lead, while the Blue team finally scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning.

“It’s been a great year to win CIF, play on varsity for the first time and be named to the all star team,” said South Hills’ Arron Fong, who will be playing at La Verne next season.
Czrter led off the game for the Red team with a triple to right field. He had two hits, a stolen base and scored on a double by Brennan McKenzie (2 doubles, stolen base).
The Red team added three runs in the second on RBIs by Isaia Medina (Mark Keppel) and Carter. Chris Moya of South Hills, which won its sixth CIF title on Saturday, scored the third run on a passed ball for a 5-0 lead.
“It’s an honor and great opportunity to coach the talented seniors in the San Gabriel Valley,” Northview coach Dan Roddy said. “It’s more of a showcase for these players because of the scouts in attendance.”
In the underclassmen game, sophomore Ethan Patrick of La Salle named the games’ MVP for the Blue team. Patrick, who was first team in the Del Rey League, collected three singles.
“It was a great honor to be named MVP,” Patrick said. “It also was a big honor to be named to play in this game.”
