Something has to give in the Hacienda League.Five of the six teams will enter their league openers on Friday night with winning records. And ask several of the coaches who’s the favorite to win the league title and you’re likely to hear a few different answers before they ultimately settle on Charter Oak High School.
“It’s Charter Oak or Los Altos,” said West Covina head coach Mike Maggiore, who was probably wise to split his bets before also endorsing his own team. “I’d like to think we’re one of the teams. I’ll know a lot more next week at this time.”
West Covina (3-2) gets first crack at undefeated Charter Oak, which seems more vulnerable now than it did a few weeks ago due to quarterback Bret Clemetson’s broken clavicle. The Chargers have only played one full game without Clemetson, and they had to work hard to put away South Hills, which West Covina routed a week prior.Meanwhile, the Bulldogs have heated up since losing their first two games of the season. West Covina has won three straight games, all by double figures, and is allowing just 10 points per game in the process.
