SCPL semifinal football preview and semifinal predictions

There will be no blaming Aram and I this week, so save your posters. With the exception of me taking Murrieta Valley over La Habra, Aram and I are picking the rest of the area teams to win. It’s not homerism really, they are all close games on paper but there are more reasons to feel good about your local teams chances, than feel the opposite. If we’re right, or half right, we could have seven, possibly eight teams in CIF finals next week. You know that probably won’t happen, so to make this interesting, I’m going to list in order most likely teams to win down to the least likely team to win.
Most Likely to least likely
1. Los Altos
2. Arroyo
3. La Mirada
4. St. Paul
5. Charter Oak
6. Montebello
7. South El Monte
8. La Habra

In Division 6 is Long Beach Wilson. On my way home from the V A Hospital and driving on 7th strret, I passed right by the the school today. I remember when they played in the top division, what a pity they had to drop so low!

The only reason they were in div. 1 was due to the fact LBP was in Div.1 Wilson came to LA about 7 or 8 years ago in a non league game , as a D1 team and LA whipped ’em by 21 points or so.

And Pomona thumped former D1 Eastvale Roosevelt and now with proper placement- not the Centennial factor- they are in their 1st semi final in school history against King HS, another Big 8 school that had no business in D1 .

A good example why the format works is LB Wilson . Still on the semis and not getting a first round blowout . Now they need to fix the leagues . La Mirada , La Habra, Buena Park , La Serna would be good in same league . In the hacienda walnut should be moved to a league that has lower division teams .

Some leagues don’t want to be “fixed.” Buena Park and La Habra will stay in the Freeway League. That league is comprised of all of the schools in the same school district.
There will be a new re-league cycle coming up, but Walnut is in the Hacienda League because their strong sports balance out their weak football team. They are a difficult school to place into the correct league. Football may be weak for them, but they absolutely destroy league teams in other sports. That is the point of the new playoff system. If a school had their sports teams in different leagues based upon strength of program, it would be a logistical nightmare. CIF does not have to worry about arrange officials, league meetings, league schedules and bus schedules. It makes sense that they would try to create a more equitable playoff system. There will never be a system that will be completely fair to all schools and all teams. However, it makes for some interesting situations. Two (or more) teams from the same league can win a CIF championship. It really reflects the strength of an entire league.

Is it petty of me to want and see an LA helmet in the pic? lol

    • Spam Burger

No it’s not. Only teams left should be represented.

      • Los altos alum :)

They need a LA helmet up there !

Here is another shot at my predictions for the SGV Teams.

Sierra Canyon 31 Charter Oak 28

Long Beach Wilson 17 Los Altos 28

    Segerstrom 21 Arroyo 24

Rancho Christian 34 South El Monte 28

  • Valley Athletics

Don’t think anyone will beat Los Altos . For charter oak it’s going to be tough . Lompoc is my pic for division 4 .they have the athletes . No one has been able to stop there run game . Beat Etiwanda 46-0 .thats a far drive for CO if they have to go there .
