Calvary Baptist 59, Orange Calvary Christian 51 — Freshman Aaron Echols had 20 points and five assists and sophomore Taylor Dial added 15 points and had six steals, five rebounds and four assists for the Cougars (1-0) in a nonleague contest. Freshman Jeremiah Frisco had 10 points and three rebounds for Calvary Baptist.

His name won’t appear in the box score. In fact, he didn’t even play in the game. But Arroyo High School football player Noah Caraballo had as much to do with the Knights’ win over Schurr as anybody else on the roster.
Caraballo, a reserve defensive end, spotted a tendency when Schurr was on offense that helped tipped off whether the Spartans were going to run or pass. He promptly told a teammate, who told his position, who told head coach Jim Singiser.
Sure enough, Arroyo out-scored Schurr 35-7 in the second half of a 42-28 win.
“It was one of those things that you couldn’t see on film, but he saw it at field level and it helped,” Singiser said of Caraballo. “We’ve been doing this a long time and that’s never happened. At least not during a game. That’s like next-level thinking. He easily could have been sipping Gatorade and checking out the cheerleaders. To pay a attention to minute details like that? They’re high school kids, I’m lucky they make it to practice.
“So yeah, he got a breakfast burrito the next morning. That’s the reward you get.”

Northview falls short: Northview struggled with penalties and when things went south in the second half against visiting Burbank, it couldn’t recover despite a last minute try.
Burbank scored 21 unanswered points and held on to upset second-seed Northview 30-27 in the CIF Southern Section Division 8 quarterfinals on Friday at Covina District field and will host Don Lugo in the semifinals next week.

Los Altos hold on in thriller: Los Altos High School football head coach Dale Ziola used the words “guts, determination and grit” to describe his team’s play on its final drive of the fourth quarter against Paramount in CIF-SS Division 6 quarterfinal action on Friday night.
The Conquerors were clinging to a 49-41 lead with 4:27 left in the game. But they picked up three first downs to run out the clock and thwarted a late Paramount rally to advance to the semifinals next week.
“That’s a testament to these guys and their character and their love for one another,” Ziola said. “They hung in there and it’s cool to see it all come together.”

Arroyo rallies to beat Schurr: With his team trailing by 14 points in the first half, Arroyo High football coach Jim Singiser thought the situation might be too big for his team.
Then the Knights hit another gear and showed why they’re the top seed in CIF Southern Section Division 12 playoffs by rallying for a 42-28 win over host Schurr in Friday’s second round.
“We’ve struggled with mental and emotional maturity this year, and I think it bit us a little bit (early),” Singiser said. “But the kids stayed the course and showed a lot of grit. Maybe a little more grit than I thought they had.”

Brian Casteel delivers for Charter Oak: The mantra for the Charter Oak High school football team all season has been next man up.
On Friday night, the Chargers went to the guy they’ve relied on all season. Senior Brian Casteel’s four touchdowns lifted visiting Charter Oak to a 35-21 win over host Downey in a CIF Southern Section Division 4 quarterfinal game.
“I’ve been coaching 48 years and he is probably the best athlete I’ve ever coached,” Charter Oak coach Lou Farrar said. “I don’t know if there is a better football player in Southern California. He has sacrificed everything for our team because we are down to our fourth-string quarterback and that’s forced him to do a whole lot of things.”

Azusa no match for Santa Ana: Santa Ana’s Pablo Aguirre ran the opening kickoff back 92 yards for a touchdown and the top-seeded Saints never looked back as they shut out Azusa 41-0 in a CIF Southern Section Division 13 quarterfinal game on Friday night at Citrus College.
It was the first time since 1989 the Saints (12-0) advanced past the opening round of the playoffs. They will host Laguna Beach next Friday at 7 p.m.The Aztecs (6-6) never quit, showing the toughness that has become a hallmark of their program.

Girls Volleyball
Glendora 3, Del Norte 0 — Alex Lowden had 20 kills and 23 digs and Marissa Montoya had eight kills and 25 digs for the Tartans in a 25-23, 25-15, 27-25 CIF state second-round victory. Also contributing to Glendora’s win were Rachel Demerjian, who had 36 assists and Cassidy Marshman, who had 23 digs. Glendora will play at Cathedral on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

A very reliable source told me that Bishop Amat will join South Hills, Damien and Bonita in CIF Southern Section Division 1 baseball. Bishop Amat was not listed in Division 1 in earlier drafts, but after crunching the numbers, it will be. CIF hasn’t released the spring playoff divisions, nor has it set a date for the release, yet. Bishop Amat won the Division 1 title in 1996 and has won six championships since then, but none have been in Division I. This will be the first time since the 1990s that Bishop Amat will compete in Division I for baseball and football.
It also could present one of the most anticipated games of all time should Bishop Amat and Damien meet in the playoffs. Damien coach Andy Nieto won four championships at Amat, the last coming in 2014, then he left to Damien last year. Wouldn’t that be something if the two met in the playoffs.

Below: What could make a Bishop Amat, Damien game even more intriguing is that Diego Barrera, the stud who pitched for Bishop Amat last year, has since transferred to Damien.

Covina led 10-0 at half and 10-3 going to the fourth quarter, but Montebello came all the way back, tying the score 10-10 on George Tapia’s 35 yard TD pass in the fourth quarter and Jonathan Olguin’s game winning TD run in overtime for the Oilers to advance to next weeks Division 11 semifinals. Colts freshman QB Nin Burns showed why he’s going to be special and the Colts’ future looks bright, but ultimately the Colts couldn’t survive two straight weeks of overtimes.

Walnut High School coach Cecil Woods kept telling his girls golf team that the important tournament was at Red Hill Country Club.
The Mustangs went undefeated in the regular season, but did not win a CIF Southern Section title, the CIF-SS’s all-division tournament or the CIF-WSCGA Southern California crown. But Walnut won the title it wanted the most: The CIF State title on Tuesday afternoon at Red Hill.“It feels so good to finally be champion,” sophomore Abigail Wiranatha said. “We were hoping and praying for the chance to be champions.”
The Mustangs won their first state title by three strokes, edging Troy 394-397. La Serna finished fifth with a 407.
Walnut finished third in 2013 and then second last year.
