Damien falls late: For three quarters, Sierra Canyon and Damien went back and forth in a thrilling CIF Southern Section Open Division quarterfinal.
Only Sierra Canyon, however, had enough gas left to keep running in the fourth, using a layup parade to race past Damien 95-81 at Simi Valley High on Tuesday.
All but one of Sierra Canyon’s fourth-quarter field goals came on layups or dunks as Marvin Bagley and Cody Riley scored the Trailblazers’ last 20 points.
“We needed other guys to get hot shooting and once Damien spread their zone, we went right at them inside,” Sierra Canyon coach Ty Nichols said.
Rowland in semis for first time in 40 years: Rowland withstood a pesky Segerstrom team that kept it close before a run late in the third quarter gave it the separation it needed for a 65-56 victory on Tuesday night in the CIF-SS Division 4AA quarterfinals.
The Jaguars’ Luis Pacheco’s 3-point basket midway through the third quarter made it 37-35, but that was as close as Segerstrom got.
Rowland closed out the pivotal third quarter on a 12-5 run to open a 49-40 lead.The Raiders built on their lead, thanks in large part to senior Curtis Hong scoring 10 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter.

Glendora adances to quarters: The Glendora girls soccer team made history Tuesday night at Citrus College.
The Tartans (19-4-2) moved into the CIF-Division 3 quarterfinals for the first time in program history with a 3-0 shutout of Oxnard.The Tartans will play at second-seeded South Torrance at 5 p.m. on Friday afternoon.“
This is the first team to ever win a league soccer title and the first to get into the quarters,” Tartans coach Steve Jimenez said. “The reason we’re here is because of our defense. We’ve had 13 shutouts this year and defense wins championships.”The Tartans scored early when Hanna Goff put the ball into the back of the net in the 18th minute with an assist from Alexis Rushlow.“
We put them away early,” Jimenez said. “That helped tremendously but we lost some intensity and from now on we’ll play teams that attack the way we do so we’ll have to keep attacking.”

Northview High School has fielded one of the top wrestling programs in the CIF Southern Section for two decades.On Saturday, the Vikings outdid their own reputation, scoring one of the better efforts in Section history, obliterating the competition at the Inland Division championships at Temecula Valley High.
The Vikings, led by juniors Eddie Flores (106 pounds) and Steven Comstock (170) and senior Jackson Serna (heavyweight) won eight individual championships and qualified all 14 of their competitors for next week’s CIF-SS Masters Meet at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario.
Northview finished 183.5 points ahead of second-place Temecula Valley. It was the program’s 14 divisional team title.
“I’m going to be honest. I’m speechless,” Northview coach Bobby Bellamy said. “I know I keep saying the same thing over again about the credit goes to the kids. But that’s all you can say when you see their effort and how they wrestle with so much passion. This is not an easy place to win at,
“Our kids persevered. They pushed past all the challenges. I’m just extremely happy and proud, all in one.”
The other champions for Northview were Dominick Arellano (113), Jason Valencia (120), Gabriel Cortez (132), Rick Marin (138) and Rigo Estrada (220). San Marino sophomore Beau Perez also won at 126. Perez was lower-weight MVP after scoring four wins by fall and one major decision.
The other area qualifiers were Northview’s Andrew Alamo (126, third), Zack Cunningham (145), Daniel Sanchez (152, fifth), Brando Reynoso (160, fifth), Lucian Duran (182, third) and David Barela (195, fourth); Rowland’s Richard Rojo (106, third) and Murrillo Armando (132, third); La Puente’s Edward Cox (170, fifth); San Dimas’ James Farmer (220, fifth) and Damien’s David Acosta (126, fourth).
Comstock’s win came after he missed most of the season with an injury. He followed up last week’s Valle Vista League win by scoring two wins by fall and defeating Mira Costa’s Jean Paul LeBosnoyani 13-9. LeBosnoyani defeated Comstock at Masters last season.
“My team pushed me, Coach Bellamy pushed me,” Comstock said. “The whole coaching staff, the school is awesome. Everyone is just a part of this win.
“It definitely feels a lot better, knowing I beat the kid who beat me last year. It’s a great feeling. But I just have to keep pushing through each match. These matches are tough. I’m winded, but we’re going to be good for the next few weeks.”
Serna won for the second consecutive season, beating Murrieta Mesa’s Rodrigo Nolan 6-3 in the final.
“It’s amazing,” Serna said of his team’s effort. “We have 14 guys going to Masters, which is amazing, but we trained all year and got progressively better. I still feel we’re underrated and you’re going to see what happens at Masters next week.”
NORTHERN DIVISION
The area qualified 18 competitors for Masters, led by Bonita’s Gevorg Hope, who won at 160.
The other qualifiers were Bonita’s Robert Casanave (106, third), Ryan Marquez (120, fifth) and Geovanny Torres (170, second); Montebello’s Ernie Espinoza (113, fourth) and Jesus Langarica (132, second); South Hills’ Dean Pons (120, third), Zack Pons (126, fourth), Nicholas McGuire (145, third) and Trung Tran (160, fourth); Schurr’s Adrian Guevara (120, fourth); Diamond Bar’s Micheal Cardial (126, second); California’s Christian Espinoza (126, third) and Seth Atilano (182, second); Santa Fe’s Eric Salas (138, fourth), Ronny Peraza (152, third) and James Cortez (220, fourth) and Alhambra’s Bobby Ramirez (195, fifth).
COASTAL DIVISION
Arroyo led area efforts with two qualifiers — Victor Atherton (106, second) and Andy Voong (195, fifth). Gabrielino’s Harrison Sanin (138, fifth) also qualified.
CENTRAL DIVISION
Eight area competitors qualified, led by La Mirada’s Carlos Reyes and La Habra’s Brandon Murray, who were second at 132 and 170, respectively.
Other area qualifiers were Sierra Vista’s Alfredo Mares (113, fourth); Sonora’s Richie Herrera (113, fifth) and Hiwad Stanekzai (132, fourth); Bishop Amat’s Sidney Flores (120, fourth) and Vincent Moran (220, fifth) and La Mirada’s Manuel Romero (138, fourth).
EASTERN DIVISION
Walnut’s Collin Hayes led an area list of six qualifiers by winning at 126.
The other area qualifiers were Walnut’s Daniel McNicholl (113, third), Brian Mariscal (120, fourth), Christian Elias (160, fifth) and Vincent Narvaez (Hwt., fifth) and Charter Oak’s Gustavo Garcia (152, second).

Jeztini nails buzzer beater: Los Altos’ Jezteni Espinoza struggled hitting her shots throughout the entire game on Saturday night against Arcadia. The senior forward was 5 for 14 from the floor before getting her last shot attempt with five seconds left on the clock and her team facing a one-point deficit. Despite Espinoza’s early struggles, she hit it when it mattered most.
Behind Espinoza’s game-winning overtime 3-pointer, Los Altos defeated Arcadia 49-47 at home in the second round of CIF Division 2AA girls basketball playoffs.
“We basically called for Jez to pop out in the corner and if she didn’t have a shot, we were going to pound it in to (junior Ulani Wells),” Los Altos head coach Mark Vakamura said. “We also had (senior Kaylee Shozuya) and it worked out. Jez had been getting that shot all game long but that was the first one she hit and it counted the most.”
Glendora rolls past Gabrielino: The Glendora High School girls basketball team hopped on the fast lane in its first game of the CIF Southern Section playoffs on Saturday night.
The Tartans, the top seed in Division 3AA, found wide-open inside lanes to the basket and went on a 20-2 run in the first half en route to a 79-47 victory over host Gabrielino in the second round.“
We were expecting that to be a little harder,” Glendora junior Alexis Lowden said of the open layups. “It gave us a lot of confidence. We were more relaxed then.”
Glendora (24-5) scored 10 consecutive points in the first quarter to break open a 5-5 game and had another 10-0 run in the first and second quarter to open a 25-7 lead.
Rowland rolls past Arroyo Grande: Third-seeded Rowland put on a defensive clinic in the second half while beating Arroyo Grande 54-30 in a second-round game of the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA girls basketball playoffs on Saturday night.
The Raiders (25-1) won their 21st consecutive game and will host Walnut in a quarterfinal matchup at 7 p.m. Wednesday.The Raiders outscored the visiting Eagles 16-3 in the third quarter, holding them to three free throws and were never threatened the rest of the way.

Damien advancese to take on top-seed Sierra Canyon: Damien’s Cameron Shelton was an unsung role player on Chino Hills’ undefeated state championship team a year ago.
The change of scenery to Damien, however, unleashed unlimited potential and it was on full display in Damien’s 78-69 victory over Corona Centennial in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Open Division boys basketball playoffs.
Damien (26-3) advances to the quarterfinals for the second straight year. On Tuesday, the Spartans will face top seed Sierra Canyon (26-1), which had to sweat out a 99-93 victory over Heritage Christian to advance.
Shelton scored inside, outside and got to the foul line to post a game-high 29 points. Elijah McCullough added 18 points, Ezekiel Alley had 12 and Justin Hemsley finished with 11 to give the Spartans four players in double figures.
But clearly, it was Shelton’s night.“He’s an incredible competitor,” Damien coach Mike LeDuc said of Shelton. “We’ve got a lot of competitors on this team but Shelton, he just loves to compete. He doesn’t back down from any challenge. He’s such a pleasure to have.”
Third-seed Los Altos falls: Peninsula didn’t lead Los Altos for very long on Friday night, but they did enough down the stretch to have the lead when it mattered most.
The Panthers battled from behind to force overtime and then pulled away from the third-seeded Conquerors for an 89-81 victory in the second round of the CIF-SS boys basketball division 1A playoffs.
Los Altos led by as many as six points in the fourth quarter, aided by 11 three-point baskets made through three quarters, but the hot shooting wasn’t there late, making only one in the fourth quarter and overtime.Peninsula looked like anything but a team heading to the quarterfinals when they lost their final two games of the regular season, each by double-figures.
San Dimas comes up short: Temescal Canyon broke open a tight game at the start of the fourth quarter then held on to knock off San Dimas 66-59 in a CIF-Southern Section Division 3A second-round boys basketball game.
It was the ninth consecutive win for the Titans (19-8) who will be on the road to play Hesperia or Palos Verdes Tuesday night.Until the Titans went on their fourth-quarter run there were three ties and 18 lead changes in the game.
The Titans went on a 15-5 run to start the fourth quarter, breaking a 39-39 tie at the end of the third quarter.
Jerred Jennen hit a pair of 3-pointers in the run and point guard Brandon Sapp got to the basket twice while Brandon Clemons controlled the offensive glass.
