Damien wins, will host Open Division Consolation final on Thursday against Roosevelt

DAMIEN ADVANCES TO OPEN CONSOLATION FINAL: Redondo High boys basketball coach Vic Martin knew the game plan for Damien High in advance of Tuesday night’s CIF Southern Section Open Division consolation semifinals.
“We knew what to expect, but we didn’t make them feel uncomfortable,” Martin said.
After settling into its comfort zone early, Damien sank six 3-pointers in the first quarter and 14 in the game before handing Redondo an 88-70 loss.
Damien (28-4) will host Roosevelt in Thursday’s Open Division consolation final, while Redondo (25-6) will wait to see who it draws when the CIF State Division 1 playoff matchups are released on Sunday.“We wanted to get out and run. It’s the game we like to play,” Damien’s Cameron Shelton said.
Colin Cuniff’s 3-pointer opened up an 11-4 Damien lead before Ezekiel Alley made it a 10-point game with his 3-pointer.
Damien wasn’t done yet, as Austin Cook hit a pair of 3-pointers to start the second quarter, his second putting Redondo in a 32-19 hole. Cook’s third 3-pointer of the quarter helped Damien take a 15-point lead.
“We pride ourselves on being able to hit our shots from the outside,” Shelton said. “It makes my job easier having guys that can hit from the outside.”
