SEMIFINAL PREVIEW: One of the best high school baseball tournaments is the annual 32-team Frozen Ropes Classic, which is co-hosted by Bonita and South Hills and includes many of the Valley’s best sprinkled with top programs from the surrounding areas.
To no surprise, South Hills (3-0) advanced to Wednesday’s semifinals with a 4-2 quarterfinal victory over Los Altos.South Hills won the CIF Southern Section Division 2 title last year and is expected to be even better this season, ranked seventh in the country in Baseball America’s pre-season high school rankings, and ranked second in CIF-SS Division I.
Even though South Hills advanced as expected, Huskies coach Darren Murphy knows each game is a chance for their opponent to make a statement.
“Yeah, I get that,” Murphy said. “I think you can feel the excitement of the other team and their crowd, especially if we’re in a close game. That’s just something we have to deal with. It comes with the territory.”

SOUTH HILLS ADVANCES TO QUARTERS: Great pitching and timely hitting led South Hills High School to a CIF Southern Section baseball title in 2016.
The Huskies have picked up right where they left off with a solid performance on the mound by junior Brandon Dieter (five strikeouts) and a timely two-run double by senior first baseman John Dearth for a 3-0 victory over Los Osos Wednesday afternoon in a second-round game of the 32-team Frozen Ropes Tournament.
South Hills (2-0) advances to the quarterfinals against Los Altos, a 13-7 winner over Rancho Cucamonga, at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Mt. SAC.
