Glendora 7, Ayala 4 — Noemi Flores was the winning pitcher and Missy Nemeth went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs for the Tartans (9-3), who won their first Palomares League game of the season.

Garey 16, Ganesha 2 — Ermis Lopez swept in singles and the team of Pedro Becerra and Bernardo Garcia swept in doubles for the Vikings (9-2), who won their Miramonte League opener.

Tribune Girls Soccer 2017 All-Area Team
Player of the year: Sophia Serafin, Bishop Amat
The return of Bishop Amat striker Sophia Serafin instantly changed the landscape for the Lancers girls soccer team, who won the Del Rey League title and advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division 3 semifinals before losing a heartbreaker to Claremont, 1-0.
Serafin, who starred at Amat as a freshman and signed a national letter of intent to play at prestigious Stanford in the fall, missed her sophomore and junior seasons due to commitments with U.S. National youth teams and injuries, but she made the most of her senior season. Serafin led the San Gabriel Valley with 41 goals to go with 24 assists in helping lead Amat to a 24-5 overall record to be named the Tribune girls soccer player of the year.
Serafin had a remarkable game in the quarterfinals against Chaminade, scoring six goals in an 8-1 victory and was named to the CIF-SS Division 3 first team.
Joining Serafin on the girls soccer all-area first team from Bishop Amat are Nayeli Diaz (sophomore), named the Del Rey League MVP and defenders Isabelle Juarez (senior) and Nicole Diaz (senior).
Glendora, who shared a piece of the Palomares League title for the first time in school history, landed four players on the first team led by Texas Tech-bound forward Alexis Rushlow (senior), who earned CIF-SS Division 3 first team honors, along with Washington State commit Hanna Goff (senior), defender Blake Manke (junior) and goalkeeper Sarah Reyes (junior).
South Hills had three players on the first team, including Loyola Marymount commit Sage Robledo (sophomore), midfielder Madi Fortich (sophomore) and Texas Christian commit Madison Warren (junior), who was named the Palomares League offensive MVP.
Diamond Bar defender Kayla Pak (senior), West Covina’s Serina Vargas (senior) and Rowland’s Ruby Fernandez (sophomore) round out the first team. Vargas and Fernandez were named the Hacienda and Valle Vista league MVPs, respectively.
Coach of the year: Steve Jimenez, Glendora
Glendora made a splashy hire when it named Steve Jimenez to take over the girls soccer program. Jimenez previously had turned Sierra Vista into a small school power, leading them to the school’s first-ever CIF-Southern Section title in 2010, winning the Division 6 championship. And from 2007-16, his Dons teams won nine league championships.
In his first season at Glendora, all Jimenez did was lead the Tartans to a share of the Palomares League title, which was the first league title in girls soccer at history at Glendora. And he guided the Tartans to their deepest playoff run ever, advancing to the Division 3 quarterfinals. For his efforts, Jimenez has been named to the Tribune girls soccer coach of the year. The Baldwin Park graduate dedicated the award to legendary Braves football coach Tony Zane, who recently passed.

Walnut squeezes past LA: Near the midway point of Wednesday’s Hacienda League baseball game between Los Altos High School and reigning league champion Walnut, Los Altos coach Gabe Lopez called a brief meeting with his team. The Conquerors were holding onto a 1-0 lead and starter Nicholas Juarez had retired nine Mustangs in a row.
Lopez told his team that it needed to focus and limit mistakes because the team that committed fewer errors would win.

SOUTH HILLS HOLDS ON: When South Hills High School baseball coach Darren Murphy decides to start senior Brandon Dieter, the plan is for him to pitch five or six innings.
Wednesday was not one of those days.
In a battle of two of the top-5 teams in the area, the visiting Huskies defeated Glendora 2-1 in Palomares League play. The victory keeps the Huskies (8-1, 2-1) in a three-way tie atop the league standings with Ayala and Bonita.
Dieter pitched a complete game in earning his third win of the season. He allowed only one run on five hits and struck out eight Tartans (9-3, 2-2). The most important stat though, according to Murphy, was that he only threw 97 pitches.

Paige dominant in Damien win: Damien baseball coach Andy Nieto admits his team needed a little morale boost. It’s early in the season but the Spartans had lost four of their first seven games and had shown an unnerving propensity for not being able to hold a lead, Senior pitcher Isaiah Paige provided just the lift Nieto was looking for.
He pitched a shutout, allowing just three hits and striking out six as the Spartans slipped past visiting Upland 2-0 in Baseline League play on Wednesday.

Bishop Amat defensive tackle Aaron Maldonado ended the suspense (for now) and gave an early commit to UCLA over the weekend.
Maldonado is considered to be one of the top defensive line recruits on the West Coast and recently saw his list of suitors explode to include Boise State, Cal, New Mexico and even Ivy League member Dartmouth.
Maldonado, in a live video while surrounded by friends and family that was a posted to social media, gave a commit to UCLA.Maldonado was the Mission League’s Defensive MVP last season and is Amat’s top returning starter as his senior seasons approaches.

MARC PARAMO LEAVES ROSEMEAD
Another of the area’s top football coaching jobs is open. Marc Paramo announced Tuesday that he has resigned as Rosemead High School football coach after five seasons.
Paramo took over for Matt Koffler in 2012 and won a Mission Valley League championship in 2014. The Panthers made the playoffs in three of Paramo’s five seasons and were 26-28 during that time. Prior to that, Paramo was a top assistant under Koffler.
“I’m 40 years old and I don’t want to do it by myself anymore,” Paramo said. “I’ve been coaching for 21 years, 17 of it at Rosemead and the last five as head coach. I just want some professional life, too. I started my administrative credential in 2008 and we went on our playoff run that year, so I stopped. “I’m already seven weeks into my course at APU, so I went back.”
Paramo said he’s considering coaching elsewhere as an assistant this season, but also may take a year off to get recharged.
“Honestly, I wouldn’t mind coaching under someone else and learning,” Paramo said. “I wouldn’t mind being a position coach somewhere and just getting to learn how someone else does it and how they work with parents and staff members. I just don’t want to deal with the head coaching headache.”
Rosemead now joins Los Altos and South Pasadena in looking for a new head coach. Earlier this offseason, West Covina and La Mirada also had coaching vacancies to fill.

ARROYO BEEFS UP STAFF
As if Jim Singiser’s coaching staff at Arroyo could get any better, the veteran Knights coach announced late last week that former Monrovia High standout Ellis McCarthy has been hired as the program’s new defensive line coach.
McCarthy was a local standout and one of the nation’s top recruits, winning two CIF championships while at Monrovia before playing at UCLA. Following the 2014 season, McCarthy declared for the NFL Draft but did not get drafted.
McCarthy joins former Monrovia teammate Nick Bueno, a standout quarterback at Monrovia during his high school days. This will be Bueno’s second season on staff at Arroyo.
The Knights won the CIF Southern Section Division 12 championship last season and have a strong group of returning starters, led by junior-to-be quarterback Ernesto Camacho.

Junior pitcher Diego Barrera, who who left Bishop Amat and enrolled at Damien over the summer, was denied eligibility earlier this year by the CIF Southern Section until August 2017, citing an athletically motivated transfer/undue influence, after Bishop Amat submitted paperwork that led to the challenge.
The Barrera family appealed the decision, but lost Tuesday. The ruling essentially ends Barrera’s junior season.
Ed Barrera, Diego Barrera’s father, claims that Bishop Amat doctored statements attributed to him that he believes led to CIF’s decision and has started airing his complaints on Twitter. Read it and you be the judge.
Barrera started at Bishop Amat as a freshman, and arguably was its best pitcher last season as a sophomore, finishing 9-2 with a 1.84 ERA. He is verbally committed to the University of Washington.
