Walnut, Nogales, El Monte win league baseball titles; Glendora, South Hills share Palomares

Glendora, South Hills tie for Palomares League title: It was a must win game in a must win week of play for the Glendora baseball team. The Tartans came through with a 4-0 shut-out win over Claremont in the final game of the regular season on Thursday afternoon.
The win clinched at a share of the Palomares League championship after missing the CIF Souther Section Division 2 playoffs last season. South Hills beat Ayala 2-1 in 10 innings late Wednesday. Because Glendora is in Division 2, and South Hills in Division 1, both will head to the playoffs as the league’s top entry. The Tartans improved to 24-6 and 11-4.
“We didn’t want to put pressure on these young kids last week by telling them it was a must win week,” Tartans coach Dan Henley said. “But this week certainly was and today was certainly a must win for a league championship, so we’re really excited about it.”

Walnut beats Charter Oak to win Hacienda: Walnut High School is the stealth baseball team of the San Gabriel Valley; overlooked until the end of the season when it suddenly appears and drops bombs on the rest of the Hacienda League.
The Mustangs (20-8, 13-1) clinched their third consecutive league title with a 6-3 win over second place and higher ranked Charter Oak on Wednesday afternoon.
“This was a huge win for us,” Mustangs coach Paul Acosta said. “Sometimes we fly under the radar, but we don’t take offense. If people want to sleep on us, that’s OK.”

Nogales clinches Montview: Trust.
It’s the intangible that a player must have with his coach. In Nogales’ 1-0 win over visiting Sierra Vista on Tuesday that clinched the Montview League baseball championship, it played a key factor in the outcome, which sewed up the league title for the Nobles (23-2, 13-1).
The characters in this subplot were Nobles coach Donnie Montanez, assistant coach Tim Nolan and starting pitcher Juan Guardado.
In the sixth inning of a scoreless game, Mario Huizar and Fernando Bravo had singles for Sierra Vista (16-6, 11-3). Nolan then came out to the mound with every intention of replacing Juan with his older brother Jonathan.
