If you thought you had seen the last of the area’s top senior class football talent, think again.
northsouthThere’s still one game left to be played and that’s the new Southern California North/South All-Star Game on Friday night at Citrus College. Introductions are at 7 p.m. and kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
“Just with all the talent in the valley, we thought we’ll try and put on a game and see how it goes,” game organizer Leon Ward said. “It’s been successful having it in May in the past and that’s why we’re doing it.”
The rosters are made up primarily of players from San Gabriel Valley schools, although both teams feature players in a format that divides the player pool by using the 10 Freeway.
The North team will be coached by San Dimas’ Mark Holman and the South is coached by Montebello’s Pete Gonzalez. Ward reports that both teams have had excellent player turnout and should have full rosters on Friday night.
The North is led by the quarterback tandem of Bonita’s Tanner East and Pomona’s Darreon Lockett. The South is led by a mammoth offensive line with several 300-pounders.

La Salle holds first passing tournament
La Salle High School will host the first local passing tournament of the offseason on Saturday with 12 teams set to go at it in hopes of getting some early momentum.
The tournament starts at 2:30 p.m. and features La Salle, South Pasadena, Pasadena and Arcadia. Crespi is the biggest name in the group, but it also includes Paracelete and Sierra Canyon.
Charter Oak will host a 24-team tournament the following weekend.
Gladstone, Workman name coaches
Gladstone has filled its open coaching vacancy with former San Dimas coach and longtime area assistant Ted Clarke, who was at Laguna Beach last season.
Workman also filled its opening by hiring Bill Malavasi, the son of former Los Angeles Rams coach and Bill Malavasi.

Elijah Blades staying at Muir

Elijah Blades is staying at put Muir, the junior defensive back confirmed after it was reported last week that he had transferred to Cathedral.

Blades is expected to be the next big-time talent out of Muir. Things were looking bleak for Muir after Blades and WR/DB Jamire Calvin left for Cathedral. Calvin is expected to stay at Cathedral.

Different boundaries, different result.

The tweak in geographic areas to pool talent from for the West team in the SGV Hall of Fame All-Star Game for high school football seniors paid big dividends on Friday night.

The West ended a seven-game losing streak in the series with a 31-14 win over the East in the game’s 36th renewal. The East still leads the all-time series 23-11-2.

With the West struggling in recent years, game organizers changed the borders used to pool talent from previously the 605 Freeway to now Azusa Ave. The game was also moved from late spring/early summer to January in an effort to help players get some last-minute recruiting attention before signing day next week.

The West held up much better in the trenches than in year’s past and that’s all its offense needed to put up big numbers. Maranatha quarterback Eli Snyder threw two touchdown passes, both to Crescenta Valley receiver Jordan Lobianco.

Muir defensive back Brian Reyes had two interceptions, one of them he returned for an 82-yard touchdown in the second half to give the West a 31-7 lead. It was part of a dominant effort by the West defense.

The West lead 10-0 at halftime thanks to a 38-yard field goal by Montebello’s Enrique Lozano and a 22-yard touchdown pass from Snyder to Lobianco. Reyna hit UCLA-bound Monrovia receiver Octavius Spencer on a 53-yard touchdown pass and it was 17-0 early in the third quarter.

The East got a little momentum after a turnover lead to a 1-yard touchdown run by Bonita’s Angel Verdugo. Another West turnover gave the East more hope, but the West clamped down and didn’t allow any points.

Snyder’s 27-yard touchdown pass to Lobianco on the ensuing possession made it 24-7. The East tried to answer and was driving when Reyes made his second interception of the night and took it back for a score.

La Mirada quarterback Christian Lara hit Pomona’s Manny Luna midway through the fourth quarter to close out the scoring for the East.

This is the 1952 Pomona football team, the last Pomona football team to win a CIF championship. They have a chance to win the school’s first title in 62 years. I talked to San Dimas coach Bill Zernickow about Pomona after the Saints’ 41-14 loss. Zernickow said Pomona is the most athletic team he’s ever coached against in high school or college.
