Saturday Recap: Nathan Schneider earns win for Bonita baseball over Servite in first varsity appearance

Bonita 6, Servite 1
— In his first career varsity appearance, sophomore Nathan Schneider tossed five innings of one-run ball to lead the Bearcats to their fifth victory of the year defeating the Friars (3-7). Schneider finished the game with five strikeouts for Bonita (5-3) to earn the victory, while the offense supported him with six runs on eight hits.
Shortstop Alex Gonzalez went 2 for 4 with a two-run single in the third inning, driving in Brandon Bradshaw and Danny Gelalich. Bradshaw, who has a team-best .524 batting average on the season, also went 2 for 4, singling twice and stole a base to get himself in scoring position before Gonzalez drove him in during the third. Freshman second baseman Tommy Delgado went 1 for 4 with a run and RBI in his first game as the leadoff hitter.
Schneider retired nine of the first 11 batters he faced and didn’t let a runner into scoring position through the first four innings. Servite threatened in the bottom of the sixth, but Jake Salsman came into the game to shut down the Friars with 1.2 scoreless innings, maintaining his perfect ERA on the year.
Glendora, Walnut — The Tartans and Mustangs played a non-league double-header with Glendora winning both games by scores of 7-6 and 6-5.
Softball
Glendora 7, Ontario Christian 5
— After getting an 8-0 win earlier in the day over Whittier Christian, Glendora won the championship of the Ontario Christian Tournament. Taylor Tetone was named the tournament’s MVP after hitting a home run in both of Saturday’s games. Kayla Sok and Hailey Mollno also were named to the all-tournament team.

Friday’s Recap: Charter Oak wins Hacienda League opener with extra-inning victory over Diamond Ranch

— The Chargers scored three runs in the eighth inning to break the tie and went on to win the Hacienda League opener.
West Covina 1, Walnut 0 — Alex Carrillo threw a complete-game shutout with just three hits allowed and 10 strikeouts to lead the Bulldogs to victory in their Hacienda League opener against Walnut (2-2-2, 0-2). Eric Vasquez manufactured the only run for West Covina (5-3, 1-0) scoring on a wild pitch after reaching on a single and advancing on a stolen base and groundout.
Los Altos 6, Chino 3
South Hills 1, Claremont 0 — South Hills got a one-hit complete game shutout with four strikeouts from Gavin Velasquez, who also scored the only run of the game to defeat the Wolfpack (4-3, 0-1) in the Palomares League opener. Frank Ramirez drove in Velasquez with a single for the Huskies (5-1, 1-0) after Velasquez reached on an error in the third inning.

Schurr 3, Alhambra 1
— Gilbert Rosario hit a two-run double in the top of the seventh to break a 1-1 tie to give Schurr the victory and handing Alhambra its first Almont League loss since 2013. Kenny Carrillo got the win with six innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts. Michael Corona came into the game in the bottom of the seventh for Schurr to get the save with a scoreless frame. Julian Zermeno hit an RBI-double for Alhambra’s only run of the game.

West Covina beats Charter Oak 5-3 to win the San Dimas softball tournament

Charter Oak 11, Monrovia 1
— The Chargers advanced to the final of the San Dimas Tournament, beating the Wildcats 11-1 in the semifinals. Charter Oak will play against West Covina in the championship at 4 p.m. in San Dimas. Kaile Chavez got the win with 3.0 innings pitched with just one hit allowed and two strikeouts. Sereena Ortiz threw the remaining two innings of the game that was called after a time limit. Ortiz had one strikeout and just one run allowed. Marissa Chavez has now reached base in six consecutive plate appearances after going 3 for 3 with two doubles in the victory. Brielle Fraijo went 2 for 2 with two RBIs for the Chargers, and Chloe Evans had a bases-loaded triple.
West Covina 10, Montclair 0 — The Bulldogs used a crucial 4th inning to blow open the lead against Monrovia (2-1). Nine runs were scored when West Covina (3-0) got ten hits in the inning. Freshman Nadya Orozco (1-0) started her first game in her high school career and struck out seven batters in four innings of work, while only allowing two hits. Orozco led the offense by going 2 for 3 with a 3-run home run, four RBIs, and a stolen base. Junior Valarie Almaraz and freshman Trinity Garcia each went 2 for 3 for the Bulldogs.

— The Moors put two runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning for a come-from-behind walk-off victory over South Gate in their season-opener. With two innings of relief pitched, Diego Sanchez picked up the win after Christian Maciel scored on a dropped fly ball to end the game. Maciel also drove in the game-tying run after Gibert Romero reached third base with a single and two past balls. Romero finished the game 3 for 4 and also threw five shutout innings with eight strikeouts for Alhambra.
La Salle 8, Rosemead 0 — Brandon Jenkins tossed a complete game two-hit shutout the Lancers to their second win in as many games this season. Johnny Leanos got both his for Rosemead, but Jenkins shut down the rest of the lineup with 11 strikeouts. Kyle Cuellar hit a solo home run for La Salle, and Ruben Martinez went 2 for 4 with a double and RBI.
Monrovia 5, Salesian 0 — Patrick Godel was on the mound for all but two outs of a combined no-hitter as the Wildcats defeated Salesian for their third consecutive win to start the season. Justin Rosedale came into the game in the seventh inning to get the final two outs, striking out one batter. Eric Herrera hit a solo shot in the fifth inning for Monrovia, and Godel went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.
Don Lugo Tournament
Glendora 10, Don Lugo 4
— The Tartans lit up Don Lugo’s pitching for 16 hits to reach the tournament’s championship game. Nick Kaye led the way with four hits and an RBI. Raymond Romo went 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Griffen Herrera and Caleb Watkins also had multiple hits for Glendora. Nolan Collet went 1 for 3 with three RBIs, and Alex Briggs was 1 for 3 with two RBIs.

— Amber Marinero scored twice for the Huskies, who secured a second place finish in their first season in the Palomares League with the win over the Bearcats (4-11-5, 1-7-2). Alina Cobian also scored for South Hills (15-5, 7-3), which finished just a game behind Ayala, who claimed the league title.

Thursday Recap: Sarah Adams scored six times as Charter Oak defeats Walnut in girls water polo

— Ayala handed the Bearcats their first Palomares League loss in seven games. Sawyer Belville had six goals for Ayala. Amanda Legaspi led Bonita in scoring with seven goals. Rachel Garwick had five saves for the Bearcats.
Charter Oak 15, Walnut 4 — The Chargers picked up a Hacienda League victory over Walnut with six goals from Sara Adams, who also had two assists and four steals. Katie Fugit added four goals, five assists, and seven steals for Charter Oak, while Devynn Stein added three goals and three assists. In goal, Samantha Wilson had seven saves, while holding the Mustangs to just four goals. Walnut was led by Erin D’Anda, who had two goals.
Girls Soccer
Covina 2, San Dimas 1
— The Colts earned a Valle Vista League victory over the Saints by one goal. San Dimas’ only goal came on a corner kick from Cheyenne Cepeda, which was headed into the back of the net by Samantha Galan.
Rowland 1, Wilson 0 — The Raiders got a goal from Edith Mejia to defeat Wilson in a Valle Vista League contest. Rowland in now 6-2 in league.

St. Lucy’s water polo falls to Los Osos: The first time the girls water polo teams from St. Lucy’s and Los Osos squared off, the Grizzlies won, but by just one goal.
The most recent showdown was close for a half, but Los Osos, the perennial CIF title contender, scored six unanswered goals to start the third quarter and went on to a 15-12 win Thursday in a Baseline League contest.
The win secured a 10th straight league title for the Grizzlies (19-8, 9-0), and a win against Chino Hills in its final league game on Tuesday would make it seven years the Grizzlies have won league without dropping a game.

Rowland 56, Nogales 47 — Earl Allen earned a double-double with 14 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Raiders to a Valle Vista League victory. Tyler Gachett and Junior Hernandez had 11 points each and Derek Ohara added 10 points.
San Dimas 66, Northview 53 — Joey Erickson recorded 14 points, 23 rebounds, and four assists in the Saints’ Valle Vista League win over Northview (8-14, 2-4). Omar Nasri led San Dimas (9-13, 3-3) in scoring with 23 points and also had a double-double with 12 rebounds. Ryan Ocampa added 16 points and four assists. Northview was led in scoring by Ulysses Aparicio and Adam Winiecki, who each had 11 points.
South El Monte 55, El Monte 38 — Alejandro Berber scored 17 points to help the Eagles hand the Lions just its third loss in the Mission Valley League. Adrian Diaz added 14 poitns and Alex Hernandez had 10 for South El Monte (8-7, 4-3). Justin Lamb had 17 points and Edward Dominguez had eight for El Monte (13-10, 5-3).
Girls Water Polo
St. Lucy’s 19, Glendora 3
— Sabrina Garabet scored nine goals to lead the Regents to a blowout victory over the Tartans at the Bonita Tournament. Hilary Adkins and Seinna Jagieslski each added four goals for St. Lucy’s, and Devin Holcomb had two.
St. Lucy’s 13, Righetti 3 — In the second round of the Bonita Tournament, the Regents earned another comfortable win with six goals from Sabrina Garabet, who also had four assists and three steals. Hilary Adkins had four goals, and Devin Holcomb had two goals and three assists for St. Lucy’s.

— Tyler Poepping scored 24 points to give the Bearcats (16-5, 2-3) at Palomares League victory over the Wolfpack (10-12, 2-3). Kyle Gray added 16 points for Bonita, while point guards David Neff and Joe Quintana each had 14.
Rowland 65, San Dimas 57 — Junior Hernandez and Derek Ohara had 24 and 22 points respectively for Rowland to defeat San Dimas in a Valle Vista League contest. Ohara also had five assists for the Raiders (13-6, 3-1).

— The Huskies (16-5, 4-1) picked up a Palomares League win at Glendora (12-10, 1-4). The Huskies were led by Brittany Wang with 19 poitns, while Sam Perez had 13 and Caitlyn Felina with 12. Glendora was led by a pair of freshmen, Michelle Can and Makaya Tilton, who had 11 and nine points respecitively. All of Tilton’s points came from beyond the arc.

>> — The Brahmas claimed a Palomares League victory over Ayala with four goals. Daniel Stelzreide, Tony di Donato, Andre Gamboa, and Jordan Wong each scored for Diamond Bar. Gamboa and Wong each had assists as well.
