There are three goals at today’s CIF-Southern Section track and field championships.
Individuals will be seeking CIF-SS titles and coveted berths in next week’s Masters Meet. Teams will also be seeking CIF-SS titles. It leads to interesting competition and situations in probably the longest meet of the season.
The meet begins at 10:30 a.m. at Mt. SAC with field events. Running events begin at 1 p.m. All four CIF-SS divisions will be contested.
The South Pasadena girls are the reigning Division 3 champions and return nearly every athlete from a team that won the title by just one point last year.
The Tigers have had to deal with injuries and subpar performances this season because of athletes involved with other sports and other issues.
Reigning state high jump champion Claire Keffer-Wright is completely healthy, Hernandez said, after spraining her ankle just before the Rio Hondo League finals.
The junior, who did not win a CIF-SS title last year, is the state leader in the event. Her teammate, Laura Anuakpado, is one of the favorites in the 200 and 400 meters. She has the fastest 400 time in the division this year.

Alemany, Mater Dei and Notre Dame are favored ahead of South Pasadena.

More than 75 area athletes and teams will be competing for CIF-SS titles and Masters Meet berths. The top eight competitors, based solely on time, in the 100, 200, 400, hurdles and 400 and 1,600 relays, and the top 12 competitors, based on times and marks, in the 800, 1,600, 3,200 and all field events will all earn berths in next Friday’s Masters Meet at Cerritos College. That is the last competition before the State meet in Fresno at the end of the month.

There are several area athletes in line to win titles.

Daniel De La Torre of La Salle will again attempt to complete a successful Division 4 distance sweep. Notably absent are any Arcadia runners in any distance events. Injuries and split among the distance program kept Arcadia from advancing to the Division 1 finals. California’s Sam Bautista will be in the division’s 3,200 and Arroyo’s San Garcia will be in the Division 2 3,200. David Galvan of Rowland will attempt a Division 2 double in the 800 and 1,600. Bonita’s Marissa Scott will attempt an 800-1,600 double, Bishop Amat’s Emily Hubert a double in the 1,600 and 3,200 and Bonita’s Mackenzie Landa is in the 3,200.

Area winners could come in the long and triple jumps with Bonita’s Dominique Wheatley and South Hills’ Josh Webster. In the sprints, it could be Bishop Amat’s Darren Andrews, Chter Oak’s Donavin Washington and Monrovia’s Chastity Fellows.

GAME STORY: Charter Oak High School’s Aaren Vaughns scored three times and Chino Hills quarterback Matt Simko threw two touchdown passes and ran for another as the East took care of the West with a 42-18 win in the 34th Hall of Fame All-Star Game on Friday night at West Covina High.
The win upped the East’s lead in the series to 32-10-2. It also was the East’s sixth consecutive win in California’s longest-running high school all-star football game.

South Hills 2, Rio Mesa 1: South Hills’ baseball team got a two-hit pitching performance from senior Adrian DeHorta and defeated Rio Mesa 2-1 in a CIF-Southern Section Division 2 first-round playoff game on Friday. The Huskies will face the winner of the San Clemente-Mayfair matchup in a second-round game on Tuesday at a site to be determined.

San Dimas 7, Torrance 1: It wasn’t just gloomy weather that cast a shadow over Friday’s CIF Division 4 first-round baseball game between San Dimas and Torrance. The game was played with the Saints’ 2009 CIF championship banner, won against the Tartars, in the backdrop and draped over the wall in center field at San Dimas High. All of the players have departed from four years ago, but the result was the same as No. 4-seeded San Dimas (23-6) knocked Torrance (15-13) out of the playoffs with a 7-1 win. It was the Saints’ first postseason victory since beating the Tartars at Angel Stadium four years ago.

Baldwin Park had just taken a 2-1 lead in the third after Century pitcher Daniel Garcia plunked Timothy Wells with the bases loaded to force in a run.
Hilo then followed with a grand slam to center for a 6-1 lead.
“The coaches told me with two strikes to stay short and when I do that in practice, I still have a lot of power,” Hilo said. “As soon as I saw him (Santana) slow down, I put my hand up, I knew it was gone.”
Baldwin Park coach Jake Barendregt said the five-run cushion relieved some of the anxiety.
“It takes a lot of pressure off your pitcher,” Barendregt said. “He doesn’t have to worry about one or two runs costing you the game, he can pitch with a little more comfort.”
It wasn’t all smooth for Fonseca, but when he needed to make big pitches, he did.
Trailing 6-1, Century loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fourth on an error and back-to-back singles.
Fonseca hit the next batter to force in a run to make it 6-2, but then got back-to-back strikeouts and a ground out to get out of the inning with a four-run lead.
“I came out and threw strikes and usually by the middle innings I cruise, but they bounced a couple hits off me,” Fonseca said. “So, I just came back and threw stirikes again.
“The (back-to-back) strikeouts were the biggest of the game. We had to stop the rally right there.”
Baldwin Park’s Jordan Palacio singled home two runs in the fifth to extend the Braves’ lead to 8-2.
Baldwin Park finished second in the Valle Vista, which boasted four teams with 20 or more victories.
In addition to Fonseca, the Braves also have power lefty Bernardo Flores, giving them a dynamic one-two punch — a recipe for playoff success.
“I don’t think anyone in the playoffs have two aces like us,” Hilo said. “That gives us a big advantage over a lot of teams. If we can put three or four runs for our guys, that’s usually enough.”

LA VERNE – There’s a reason why CIF-Southern Section baseball playoff games are played on fields and not paper.
Bonita High School, which won the Division 3 title last season and was top seed this season, found out why Thursday.
Henry Martinez doubled home two runs in the top of the seventh inning and Willie Aguilar struck out Connor Renard in the bottom of the inning with they tying runs on second and third and visiting Cathedral shocked the No. 1 Bearcats, 3-1, in a first-round game at Las Flores Park.
Cathedral, which beat Xavier Prep, 4-0, in the wild-card round on Tuesday, improved to 15-16 and will face either Elsinore or Culver City in the second round on Tuesday. Bonita, which had tied the score at 1 on a bases-loaded walk to Austin McGilvra in the sixth, finished 26-4-1. The Bearcats, who are 58-6-1 during the past two seasons, also suffered their earliest playoff exit since losing to Northview in the second round in 2007. Bonita had gone to the finals, winning last season and losing in 2010, twice in the past three seasons.
“A lot of respect to Cathedral. They’re a tough team,” Bonita coach John Knott said. “But our guys played with a lot of heart. They didn’t quit, even after getting the first two out (in the seventh). We were a hit away from tying, and who knows. But I know Cathedral wasn’t going to back down either.
“It’s sad to end it this way, but we knew this was going to be a very tough game.”

Cathedral, which finished third in a tough Del Rey League this season, showed its moxie in the seventh after Bonita rallied to tie it at 1 in the sixth.
The Phantoms quickly countered with a lead-off single by Ramon Bramasco. He advanced to second on a sacrifice before moving to third on a single by Brian Duenas. Matthew Moran bunted for a single to load the bases before Henry Martinez, who was pinch-hitting for designated hitter Adam Galvan lined an 0-2 pitch in into right-center field for a two-run double and a 3-1 lead.
“The thing about Parker (Merritt) is that he can tend to be a little wild within the (strike zone),” Knott said. “He throws so many strikes and doesn’t walk anybody. He’s around the plate, and they did a good job of hitting.
“I could have brought (Sam Stavang) in there, but I’m a firm believer you win or lose with your best players, especially in playoffs, so I wanted Parker to decide our fate. The guy comes off the bench, 0-2 and hits a breaking ball for a double. He did a good job of hitting.”
Bonita didn’t go away quitely.
The Bearcats, after Aguilar got the first two outs, nearly rallied to tie the score. Jacob Blunt reached on a fielding error and Justin Gomez followed with a single to right field. Both runners than took second and third on a fielder’s indifference. But Aguilar struck out Renard to end it.
“Our kids could have pouted and whined and felt sorry for themselves (after giving up two runs),” Knott said. “But even with two outs and nobody one, we get two to second and third, where a base hit ties it. I think we showed a lot of heart.
“That’s the identity of this group. We’re not the most physical. But we have a good, tough team and they didn’t quit.”
Bonita missed some scoring chances during the first three innings, including getting Justin Row, who had two doubles and single, thrown out at home in the first.
Cathedral took advantage of it, taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a single by Willie Aguilar and a RBI double by Junior Aguilar.
Bonita tied it at 1 in the sixth on singles by Blunt and Renard and walks to Tanner Diebold and Austin McGilvra.

The play-in games have been completed, now the CIF-Southern Section baseball playoffs, sans Bishop Amat’s 12-3 victory over Garden Grove Santiago on Wednesday, kick into high gear, with first round games slated for today and Friday. I thought what a good time to look at the divisions involving local teams, where the area’s best hopes for championship glory rest with Division 3 defending champion Bonita. Here goes.

DIVISION 2
Seeds: 1. Redlands East Valley (22-4-1), 2. Temecula Valley (19-5), 3. Los Osos (20-2), 4. Cypress (21-8).
Locals: South Hills (21-6), Damien (17-10).
Darkhorse: La Mirada (19-10-1)
Projected champion: Los Osos
Thoughts: Locally, South Hills had another solid season, but the odds are stacked against the Huskies, who host Rio Miesa (11-13) today. South Hills should advance to second round, but will have to run the gauntlet, with likely facing San Clemente (22-8), which was the division’s top team for much of the season, in the round of 16 and No. 1 Redlands East Valley in the quarters. La Mirada features one of the better pitching staffs in the division and could pull off some surprises. Los Osos has had just a few slip ups, but has been lights out lately, so I go with “The Bears” Grizzlies.

Seeds: 1. Bonita (26-3-1), 2. Serra (24-5), 3. Gahr (20-5), 4. Palm Desert (16-7)
Locals: Bontia, Los Altos (16-9), Bishop Amat (17-11), Diamond Bar (19-6), West Covina (16-12-1)
Darkhorse: Bishop Amat
Projected champion: Bonita
Thoughts: Bonita, after going 61 years between CIF-SS titles, looks ready to go back-to-back. The Bearcats don’t have the offensive prowess they enjoyed last season, but very few can match their pitching. The exception to the rule might be Serra, which should also advance to the final, setting up an epic battle for title glory. Cathedral and starter Bryan Duenes might be the Bearcats toughest opponent prior to the final when they square off today. Go with the Bearcats in that one and for the division crown. Bishop Amat is a team to lookout for. The Lancers, after a slow start, have won 12 of 15, with the losses coming to Serra and Cathedral.

Seeds: 1. Oaks Christian (24-3-1), 2. Kaiser (23-3), 3. Laguna Beach (24-2), 4. San Dimas (22-6)
Locals: San Dimas, Northview (21-8), Baldwin Park (20-5), Nogales (22-6)
Darkhorse: Northview
Projected champion: Oaks Christian
Thoughts: Oaks Christian has never won a CIF-SS baseball title, but this year might be the exception. The Lions finished the regular season with 12 consecutive wins and feature arguably the top staff in the divisions, with their top two starters (Phil Bickford and Spencer Vogelbach) boasting ERAs under 2.00. Two of Oaks Christian’s three losses were to Division No. 1 seed Mater Dei and No. 3 Harvard-Westlake. There doesn’t appear to be a team in the division that can matchup, so I’ll go with chalk and pick the Lions. Northview, with victories over South Hills and close losses to Bonita and San Dimas, has shown it can matchup with most teams on a given day. The question is can the Vikings put a couple of those performances together. I can see Northview advancing to the quarters, where their season likely ends with a loss to Oaks Christian. Also be wary of San Dimas, which after struggling in the Arcadia Tournament, has found its way late and I wouldn’t be surprised of a 2009 repeat.

DIVISION 5
Seeds: 1. Paraclete (21-3), 2. Oaks Hills (21-7), 3. Ontario Christian (21-5), 4. Citrus Valley (19-5)
Locals: La Puente (13-10), El Monte (12-11), Duarte (13-12), Arroyo (13-8), Sierra Vista (17-5), Mountain View (10-14).
Darkhorse: Ontario Christian (21-5)
Thoughts: This division features the most area teams. But the added odds likely won’t keep Paraclete from making a title run. The Spirits are the team to pick after closing the regular season with 16 wins over their final 17 games. Sierra Vista, La Puente and Arroyo all should win first-round games, but all that gives La Puente and Sierra Vista, who shared the Montview League title, is encounters against the top two seeds. Arroyo has a tough matchup against Brentwood, and likely Ontario Christian in the second round.

Remember Bishop Amat, the team with the huge pre-season expectations that dropped five of its first six and 10 of 16 to disappear off the radar and out of the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 baseball rankings?
That seems so long ago.
Bishop Amat routed visiting Garden Grove Santiago 12-3 in the first round of the Division 3 playoffs on Wednesday, the Lancers’ 12th win in their last 13 to improve to 18-11.
Just like that, the Lancers are one of the hottest teams in the division and the timing couldn’t be better.
“There’s nobody in this (division) that’s played a tougher schedule and is as battle tested as us,” Lancers coach Andy Nieto said. “We’ve gone through a lot and we’ve continued to fight the fight.
“Down the stretch we’ve won half a dozen one-run games. That means you’re defendng well, you’re pitching well and closing out games. It means instead of finding ways to lose games, you’re clutching-up and closing it out.” (To continue reading click thread)

About the only adversity Amat faced was giving up a two-run homer to the Cavalier’s Franky Raigoza in the first inning to fall behind 2-0.
Other than that, starter Andrew Eppenbach pitched five solid innings, giving up just the two runs and five hits before giving way to Alan Rodriguez and Eric Vega to close out the sixth and seventh respectively.
“We knew they were a free-swinging team,” Nieto said. “We asked for a fast ball away and he (Eppenbach) got it up and in and the guy (Raigoza) buggy-whipped it and hit the crap out of it. That’s what you should do to a pitcher’s mistake.
“But to Andrew’s credit, he settled and pretty much ran through the line-up the rest of the way.”
Evan Claproth’s double in the first scored Scott Hurst and Hurst’s sacrifice fly in the second inning scored Michael Hernandez to tie the score, 2-2.
Amat blew it open in the third inning, scoring eight runs to take a 10-2 lead, thanks in part to four Cavaliers’ errors.
Amat’s Christian Moya singled in two runs and with two runners aboard, Daryl Daniels’ innocent single to center rolled through the outfielder’s legs to the fence, allowing Daniels to round the bases as the Lancers tacked on three more runs.
Adam Alcantara also had a big day with a double, single, two runs scored and two RBIs.
“That’s big when you can have a big inning like that,” Nieto said. “It’s difficult to respond.
“We had a game like that against Chatsworth where one big inning took you out of the game. Unless you have the firepower to come back and respond it makes it difficult.”
Bishop Amat will play the second round on Tuesday against the winner of today’s game between Downey and fourth-seed host Palm Desert.
Palm Desert won the Division 4 title last year and Amat defeated Palm Desert to win the Division 4 title in 2011.
Ironically, Amat just defeated Palm Desert 3-2 in a non-league game on Saturday that was set-up to give both teams a tough test before the playoffs.
“It’s funny because we went up there in the very mild 105 degree weather to play a game we scheduled months ago because both of thought it would be a good thing to do,” Nieto said.
“They’re the defending champs and if that’s the way it has to be, so be it. Whether it’s Downey or Palm Desert, we’re as ready as we’re going to be.”

The Tartans looked in good shape to advance through the first five inings, leading 2-0 before Laguna Hills cut it to 2-1 in the sixth on an RBI double by Donahoe. Then it fell apart in the seventh.
Eric Flores, who relieved Morton in the sxith, hit three consecutive batters to load the bases with one out. Matt Young relieved Flores and struck out Cameron Bondy for the second out. But a wild pitch scored Beiber to tie it at 3. Cunningham, after Noah Anderson walked to load the bases, then hit a chopper off the plate that third baseman Sanford had to hold, allowing Lucky Zuvich to score for a 3-2 lead.
Donahoe followed with a two run single to push it to 5-2. Bieber, who gave up four hits and struck out five, got the Tartans in order to win it.
“Losing is never an enjoyable experience,” Henley said. “I thought we came out here and competed well. They took advantage of situations in the seventh inning and it happened in a hurry.
“It was boom, boom, boom. We were one pitch away, but when it rains it pours. Yeah, it’s frustrating, but that’s part of the life plan”
The loss overshadowed a solid effort from Morton, who was a fill-in starter for Scott Burke. The junior carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before replaced in the sixh after giving up a run. He gave up four hits and struck out six in 5 1/3 innings.
Glendora led 2-0 after two innings. D.J. Peters scored on a RBI grounder by Martin Gallegos in the first and Sanford hit a home run in the second.
“He did a great job,” Henley said of Morton. “He’s a junior and he’s going to have many more opportunities like this. It was special effort he had for the ball club today.”
But the Tartans were handcuffed by Bieber, who gave up just one hit over the final five innigns, allowing his team to rally for the victory and eliminate the Tartans.<

South Hills’ present and future was on display during a grind out 2-1 victory over visiting Agoura during a CIF-Southern Section Division 2 wild card softball game on Tuesday.
Sophomore pitcher Caitlyn Van Hemelryck belted a line-drive two-run homer to center in the second inning and did the rest in the circle, allowing just one run on four hits to advance the Huskies to Thursday’s first-round at Pacific League champion Beckman.
“It feels amazing,” Van Hemelryck said. “It’s my first year going to CIF and being in the playoffs I knew my team would back me up.”
“I knew as long as I put it in play for my defense, they would help me out.”
South Hills interim head coach Brandon Gonzalez was not surprised, he’s watched Van Hemelryck blossom all season.
“When she’s on the rest of the team’s on,” Gonzalez said. “She’s tough and one of the toughest (players) out there. Everyone talks about other pitchers, but when she’s on she’s one of the best in the area.”

After Amanda Schwartz singled and moved to second on a passed ball, Madysen Cossack drove her home to make it 2-1.
Agoura’s Liona Moss led off the sixth with a single, but the Huskies answered with a double play and got a ground out to end the threat.
The Huskies had to hold on in the seventh after the Chargers’ Carly Cohen singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.
But Van Hemelryck got the final two outs to close it out.
“We didn’t execute the way we wanted, but we found a way to win,” Gonzalez said. “I told them you’re not going to win the same way every time, but you found a way to win with those two runs.”
South Hills shortstop and leadoff hitter Lexi Robles led off with a triple in the first and double in the third inning, but the Huskies couldn’t drive her in.
In fact, the Huskies had the lead runner on in every inning but the seventh.
“It was frustrating because normally we (sacrifice) runners around and punch across runs in those situations,” Gonzalez said. “I’m just thankful it didn’t come back to haunt us.”
Not only did Robles provide power at the plate, she was a vacuum at short.
“Lexi’s the first kid I’ve coached or seen that thinks and leads her way through a game,” Gonzalez said. “Without her there all year, it’s a different story for our team.”

Breaking News: Proposal H won after heated discussions at Monday’s Mt. SAC re-league meeting that starts for the 2014-15 sports season. The big winner is Charter Oak, which moves from to the Sierra to the Hacienda League. Prop H granted some relief for Glendora, which moves from the Baseline to the Sierra while Chino Hills leaves the Sierra for the Baseline. Bonita, South Hills and Diamond Bar may not like the move to the Sierra, but without Damien, Chino Hills (and Charter Oak in football), it’s not that bad of a league. In fact it looks fair. The big question becomes, will the Sierra stay in the Inland Division for football? Probably not, at the end of the day, look for the Sierra to get relief in football. Big loser is Rowland, which was hoping to get relief from the Hacienda to the Valle Vista. Leaving Rowland in the Hacienda is a lose-lose all the way around. Another big loser is Chino Hills and Ayala, which will find it much tougher in all sports in the Baseline. Baldwin Park also must stay in the Valle Vista after pleading to move to the Montview and thank goodness, Edgewood is back in 2014. What are your thoughts on how it all went down?

The senior, who plans to swim at Mt. SAC next year, scored the Valley’s lone victory in the division. Until the final 200 yards, it did not look like that was going to happen, either.

“I was just trying to stay up with those girls in the middle,” she said. “I thought they would take off on me. When I saw I was still with them at the 200, I just figured, `Let’s just go for it and see what happens.’ ”

Gautreau was seeded third behind top qualifier Gwen Walker of Troy, whom she’d never beaten, and Kat Wickham of Palm Springs. She trailed both of them by a body length after 200 yards.

“It’s my last high school race,” she said. “I knew I was right there and I knew I could catch them. The more I could catch up to them, the more momentum I could gain.

“I felt so good at the end.”

Gautreau, who was 10th in the race last year, began moving up and beat Walker and Wickham, who were side-by-side, to the wall after 325 yards.

“I didn’t know what to think,” Gautreau said.

She then started a frantic push with 75 yards left to stay ahead of Walker.

“I could tell Gwen was trying to take off,” she said. “I didn’t know how fast she would come on and I didn’t want her to escape, so I just figured that I’m almost done, I’ve gone through all this. I mind as well go for it now.”

Gautreau swam a personal-best 4:34.70 with Walter in 4:55.64 and Walnut’s Theresa Lo sneaking by Wickham to take third in 4:56.39. Pasadena’s Victoria Lepesant finished ninth in 5:06.69. Gautreau dropped six seconds off her time during the prelims and finals.

“I feel like all the hard work finally is starting to catch up and is paying off,” she said. “It’s just feels so good to know that everything I worked for so far actually did something and got me somewhere.

“I’ve been waiting for so long for something like this to happen. It feels so much better now.”

In the 200 free, sophomore Lo was fourth in 1:52.80 with Gautreau sixth in 1:53.43 and senior Lepesant eighth in 1:54.08.

In the boys 100 breaststroke, arguably the best race of the session, Arroyo Grande’s Zachary Stevens edged Crescenta Valley’s Young Tae Seo and Keppel’s Justin Chiu to win in a meet-record 55.13. Seo swam a 55.25 and Chiu, a junior, had a personal-best 55.91. The trio were together for the first 150 yards, but Chiu began fading with 20 yards to go.

“I think toward the end I took an extra stroke and that might have cost me the race,” Chiu said. “I am so glad I was able be a part of that race. It was great to go against these fast and awesome guys.”

Chiu won last year’s CIF-SS Division 4 title in the event. He said this third-place finish was more satisfying.

“I’m actually even happier than last year,” he said. “It was great having such great competition with these guys.”

Walnut junior Derek Kao was fourth in the race in 56.78 and Los Altos’ Simon Wang sixth in 57.75. Chiu also was fifth in the 100 butterfly in 51.40.

Glendora’s Catherine Sanchez finished second in the 100 fly in 56.26.

“I am only a freshman and I got second,” she said. “I’m really, really happy.”

St. Lucy’s Sammie Keehn was seventh in the race in 57.84.

Keppel saw its streak of consecutive CIF-SS team titles end at four with the move up in divisions. In the boys division, Los Osos won with Crescenta Valley second. Damien finished eighth, Walnut ninth and Keppel 10th. Damien had finished second in the division last year.

Troy won the girls title by six points over Ayala, which beat King by one. Glendora was eighth, one point ahead of Keppel.

There were seven other meet records. Los Osos’ Kyle Coan (200 free), the Los Osos boys 200 and 400 free relay teams, CV’s Seo (200 IM), CV’s boys 200 medley relay team and Ayala girls 200 and 400 free relay teams all set new marks.

Perhaps the most inspiring fourth-place finish in the meet was from Charter Oak’s Joey Maddox in the 100 free. He started in lane 9, the slowest qualifying position for the finals, and was timed in 47.93. Damien’s Corey Maier was sixth in 47.98 and West Covina’s Kyle Chang eighth in 48.12.

“I swam my heart out,” Maddox said. “It was my last race for high school.”

Also getting fourth-place finishes were Damien’s Corey Maier in the 100 backstroke in 52.61 with Walnut’s Derek Wan seventh in 53.49 and teammate Jerry Chen ninth in 54.41. Walnut’s Chen, Kao, Wan and Emmett Poon was fourth in the 200 medley relay in 1:37.77.

HACIENDA SCENARIO: Bonita (24-3-1, 11-0) wrapped up the league title by defeating second-place Diamond Bar (19-5, 8-3) earlier in the week. They meet again today at Bonita. Diamond Bar needs to win to finish second by itself, otherwise it will finish in a tie for second with Los Altos (16-9, 8-4), who is already finished. Only question is will fourth-place West Covina (14-12-1, 4-7) earn an wild-card game. West Covina finishes with Rowland at home.

BASELINE SCENARIO: Los Osos (19-5, 12-2) won the league title with a 9-0 no-hitter over second-place Glendora (17-8, 9-5) on Tuesday. They will meet again at Los Osos today, but the order of finish already has been determined for the top two spots. Etiwanda (12-12-1, 7-7) needs to beat (15-9, 6-8) to finish third.

MONTVIEW SCENARIO - La Puente wrapped up the Montview Leauge title with a 2-0 win over Workman on Thursday. Ramon Melendez had an RBI sacrifice bunt in the second inning and Anthony Eurchette hit a sacrifice fly to score the other run in the third for the lone runs. Ethan Etchebarren had 11 strikeouts and scattered four hits and three walks as the Warriors finished 13-8 and 11-2 to fend off Sierra Vista (17-5, 11-3) and Duarte (13-12, 10-4), who finished second and third, respectively.

MISSION VALLEY SCENARIO – All finished with Arroyo (13-8, 12-3) capturing the MVL league title with El Monte (12-11, 10-5) second and Mountain View (10-14, 8-7) third.

VALLE VISTA SCENARIO – In case you missed it, San Dimas (22-6, 11-1) swept Northview (20-8, 8-4) this week to capture the league title outright. Extremely impressive considering the quality this year. Baldwin Park (20-5, 9-3) winds up finishing second with Northview third and Nogales (21-7, 7-5) fourth. All four teams are expected to make the playoffs.

DEL REY SCENARIO: Serra (23-5, 10-0) won the league title and helped Bishop Amat (16-11, 7-3) finish second by sweeping Cathedral (14-15, 6-4) this week to move the Lancers past Cathedral. In one of the worst scheduling fiasco’s I can think of, Amat is traveling to Palm Desert for a non-league game on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Now, why would you do that with the playoffs starting next week? In Amat’s defense, the schedule was made early in the season figuring they would have a long layoff down the stretch, but rain forced the Lancers to play win twice this week against Bishop Mongtgomery.

Four area softball teams have a shot of advancing past the second round of CIF, Bishop Amat, San Dimas, Chino Hills, Bonita, that’s it.

The East vs. West Hall of Fame All-Star football game is scheduled for Friday, May 17 at West Covina High School at 7 p.m. The East coach is Gladstone’s Albert Sanchez, who just retired after the Gladiators’ best-season ever and the West Coach is El Monte’s BBQ food king Joel Sanchez. The all-star game is normally in the middle of June when school is out and all spring sports are finished, so the date is unique and somewhat of a risk for player participation and fans. Some football players are still playing baseball or competing in track. The first-round of CIF baseball playoff games also are on Friday and the CIF-SS track finals are the following night at Mt. SAC. But West Covina football coach and host Mike Maggiore thinks the early date will still attract a large crowd, and there are more than enough players already committed. “There are probably more people willing to come watch during the school season than after school gets out,” Maggiore said. “For the players, it’s a great way to end their high school years. They’ve got a football game then graduation, it kind of goes hand and hand. We think it’s a nice way to send them out.”
