Fred Robledo, Aram Tolegian and James Escarcega lead off with “One More Thing,” which highlights all the hot topics of high school football on and off the field along with two-minute game previews and predictions of this week’s biggest football games for the SGVN.
Friday Night Wrap: Northview, La Serna, Alhambra remain unbeaten; Amat rolls

Northview dominant again in 35-0 win over Don Lugo: Someone is going to have to figure out where the weakness is for the Northview High School football team because after a month of football, it hasn’t shown signs of any. Northview’s James Jimenez looked like a video game quarterback the way he spread it around to his speedy receivers, completing 12-of-16 passes for 272 yards and four touchdowns in a 35-0 victory over host Don Lugo on Friday.

Punt returns spark Upland football to victory over La Mirada: With its offense struggling to convert long drives into points, Upland used a dominant performance from its defense and a pair of third-quarter punt returns for touchdowns to pull away from La Mirada for a 35-7 victory Friday night. The Highlanders (3-0) recorded 16 tackles for loss while holding the Matadores offense to just 130 total yards.
Bishop Amat rolls to 45-14 win over Rancho Cucamonga: Bishop Amat High School is on a roll and the duo running back combination of Kenny Collins and Chris Lopez accounted for four of the seven touchdowns to lead the Lancers to a 45-14 non-league win over host Rancho Cucamonga Friday night.
Andrew Henriquez connects, leads La Serna football over Colony: There’s nothing complex about the La Serna High School football team’s offensive scheme. But knowing what’s coming is one thing; stopping it is quite another matter. Colony found that out Friday. Andrew Henriquez threw for 151 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner to Abraham Shalash with less than two minutes to play to lift the Lancers to a 37-30 victory over the host Titans in a nonleague game that featured two of the top 10 teams from CIF Southern Section Division 5.
Alhambra football overcomes mistakes, holds off Wilson: The stats may not look good for the Alhambra High football team, but they don’t have to for the Moors to find a way to win. Alhambra committed six turnovers, had 13 penalties and only 143 total yards, but thanks to a few big plays, the Moors held off L.A. Wilson 21-20 in nonleague action on Friday night.

Covina’s Nin Burns II too much in 54-16 win over West Covina: Spurred by the 3,000 fans who took advantage of free admission for the first football ballgame at the renovated Thyberg Stadium, host West Covina looked like it had shaken off some of the problems that had plagued it in its two losses. West Covina (1-3) led by three points midway through the second quarter but that was it for the night as the Covina High (2-1) scored the final 41 points to pick up its second win of the season, 54-16.

Temple City knocks off unbeaten Gabrielino: After Gabrielino senior running back Adam Scannell scored from seven yards with 7:18 remaining, the Eagles appeared to have found a new energy on their sidelines. Gabrielino trailed Temple City by five points following the score by Scannell and were knocking on the Rams’ door after struggling to get anything going on offense in the previous three quarters.

La Habra comes up short against Mission Viejo: Mission Viejo’s defense showed no favoritism against visiting La Habra on Friday night, and it was a good thing for the Diablos. The Highlanders defense eventually locked down, too. A week after collecting four interceptions against Santa Margarita, the No. 3 Diablos grabbed two more against the No. 12 Highlanders and followed JoJo Forest and Joey Yellen to a 28-14 victory in a duel of top public schools.
Diamond Ranch comes up short against Ayala: The football gods seemed to be conspiring against Ayala senior wide receiver/cornerback David Diaz entering Friday’s game against Diamond Ranch. Not only was he battling a stomach illness that dehydrated him during the game, but he was covering Diamond Ranch’s standout 6-foot-2 sophomore wide receiver, Cristian Dixon, who already has a college offer from USC, among others.
