Four more years! Well, at least one...

Never let it be said that Your Mayor does not read nor respond to mail from his constituency. Today, I received three Emails from “Gilmore Girls” fans anxious to see their favorite show onto an eighth season and perhaps beyond. This follows an earlier note from a fan expressing the same wishes and wondering, realistically, what the chances are for the series continuing after this season’s end.

One, a fan in Australia, wrote, “I believe we need more time. More time to see Luke and Lorelai back together, but not in a rushed blur. More time to experience Rory’s first steps in the world after college, but not have it handed to her just to wrap up the season neatly. More time to see Lane and Zach experience the trials and tribulations that come with parenthood. Just more time!” She then proceeded to butter me up: “A quality article (about renewing the show), from you, a respected industry journalist, would indeed speak volumes.”

(To be fair, she does live in Australia, so her confusion as to my being “a respected industry journalist” is understandable.)

Another correspondent was even more deft at buttering me up, addressing me as “The Distinguished Mayor of Television” (emphasis mine, naturally). She echoed her Aussie counterpart’s concern: “I also unfortunately realize that if there is any truth that the series could be ending soon, that there couldn’t possibly be enough time left this season for the much beloved town folk of Stars Hollow, not to mention the key characters, to bring their delightful stories full circle. I truly believe that the captivating characters and imaginative storylines deserve at least one more season to do them justice.”

Both directed me to a fan site determined to help the show continue behind an initiative called The Great8Mandate. It includes the names and addresses of CW executives and Warner Bros. TV production executives, cast members (through the production studio), even some journalists.

In the nascent stages of their crusade, these folks are more mobilized than the fans of “Deadwood” trying to resurrect their favorite show. Of course, they had to scramble when HBO unexpectedly and rather surprisingly announced the show was cancelled before its third season even premiered. “GG” fans are benefiting, if that’s the word, of media speculation that the show wouldn’t be returning and are able to make a pre-emptive strike, something denied “Deadwood” die-hards (or “Everwood” fans, for that matter).

Herewith, reasons for said fans to both take heart and/or prepare for the worst:

REASONS “GILMORE GIRLS” MIGHT NOT RETURN

* There’s been a distinct sense – even among hardcore “GG” fans – that the show has lost the spin off its fastball since series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino departed after a contract dispute last season, and ratings have declined fairly steeply from its halcyon days. An eighth season wouldn’t likely get much better, and shows of that age rarely increase their viewership. A season eight could limp to an ignominious conclusion that might leave a bad taste in fans’ heads.

* There’s not a lot of financial incentive to continue. Luring cast members back could prove costly – too costly for a mini-network like The CW to afford. And the show has more than enough episodes to play in syndication forever, so all involved have plenty of royalties coming their way, so there’s not a lot of incentive for anyone to continue.

* It seems highly unlikely that Alexis Bledell would be interested in continuing in the show. At her appearance at TV Press Tour last July, she seemed to be extremely disinterested; she was a no-show at a magazine photo shoot and, in general, just seems to want to get on with her career.

REASONS “GILMORE GIRLS” MIGHT RETURN

* Lauren Graham was recently given a producer’s credit, which clearly is a step towards luring her back for another year.

* The CW needs it more than it needs The CW. Even with its lower ratings, only a handful of other shows on the network have a higher viewership. “Reba’s” gone, “Veronica Mars,” “Seventh Heaven” and “One Tree Hill” are on life support, and its Monday sitcom lineup is hurting. That’s a lot of prime-time real estate for a network with a modest development budget to renovate, so The CW might be willing to pony up to keep a solid audience and critical favorite on the schedule. Even a diminished "GG" is better than most CW programming.

* My correspondents are correct – rushing Luke and Lorelai’s rekindling of their romance would kind of stink.

So what do you think? Would you like to hear Lorelai’s motormouth banter for one more season, or would you tell her, “Here’s your hat; what’s your hurry?”

Oh. My. God. Is this a fork in my eye, or what? Oh, sure for your other part-time correspondents, you'll write an entry about the Girls. I've been bitching about this series all season!

In a word, it sucks. But, as you well know, I am one of those die-hards who just can't stop watching the train wreck it's become. Our only solace is in ripping it to shreds after every episode. That somehow provides a measure of comfort, however cold.

And don't you be giving me all your "professional" opinions and reasons why it might or might not be coming back next season. It is OVER! There is no freaking WAY I'm watching another season of this shit. You and all the Palladinos in the world can't make me. It doesn't matter if Lorelai is a producer or just fucking one of them. It's done.

And OF COURSE before it bids us adieu, they will get Luke and Lorelai back together again. It's like any one of us Little People could be writing the show now, it's so damn obvious. Grr.

Ok, I'm gonna go have a drink now.

Anne said:

Suzy Q, if you don't want to watch the show - please don't! Be done with it already and stop complaining.

But at least let the rest of us enjoy one more season. We deserve to have the Lorelai/Luke relationship play out over time and not see it crammed into the last 3 episodes of season 7. Gilmore Girls may not be what it once was, but every show goes through ups and downs. Gilmore Girls is 10 times better than any replacement show The CW could throw in there.

Lauren Graham hits it out of the park everytime and as long as she's Lorelai, I'll contine to watch.

Oh Boy. Suzie, do you get, what the difference ist???
- If you don't want to carry on watching the show, you just turn off your TV or switch to another program, that's it. Don't bother.
- If WE want to go on watching the only chance is if they go on producing!!!! So that's what we are hoping and begging for.
Yes, the first seasons were different but it would have also been difficult for ASP to keep the lively spirit. I think the changes have to do a lot with the personal changes/development of Alexis Bledel who's changed from being a girl to becoming a woman. I don't blame her for wanting to go on with her career und leaving the show - I'm one of those fans who would favour a season based on Lorelai & Luke and a LOT of Stars Hollow, and having a frequently visiting Rory. Why not - it's Lauren Graham and the others making this show, Alexis Bledel has dissociated a bit. (Again, no blame, it's completely understandable.)
So - it's not only US and Australia, we her in Austria/Europe deeply hope for at least a next season!
Regards to everyone,
Billie

I'm a massive GGirls fan from Australia, and like my fellows and the Mayor I'm praying for another season. Regardless of the changes in season seven, the show's STILL better than the vast majority of other television offerings, and I have to hope that when the new team settle in completely it'll bounce back. The overall quality of Gilmore Girls is what keeps the fans watching - even those recently disappointed - because it is worth it.

Give the Girls a chance. They'll surprise and delight you for an eighth season, as they did all seven so far.

I agree that Gilmore Girls needs to have at least one more season to properly wrap things up.

Besides, it isn't like both Lauren and Alexis haven't been able to develop their careers while doing the show.

Some might even speculate that they only had the opportunity to do the movies they have done, because of their exposure while on Gilmore Girls. It may give both of them a little more time to boost their careers before the Gilmore Girls'set turns off their cameras and spotlights for good.

Stephanie said:

I for one will be thrilled to see another season. Honestly, I think it should be the last season seeing that it hasn't been the same since ASP had left. But they shouldn't just wrap everything up in such a short time. It would seem rushed and sloppy. So, bring on one more season! Please! :)

Yay! Another Great8Mandate mention! Thanks.

Caryn said:

Firstly, as "the Australian" quoted in your column let me say thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts Mr Mayor.

I just wanted to point out one thing that I, and other hard core fans I know feel, which is: the show took a decidedly different turn whilst ASP and team were at the helm! Season six was a lot more dramatic than any other season before it, and I think it extremely unfair to lump the change in the show on Dave Rosenthal for this point alone. He has simply had to spend a great deal of this season playing out the storylines in a believable manner in order to get to a point, and we see glimpses in the last few episodes, whereby the usual fun and wacky town and characters of Stars Hollow can once again shine.

Dave Rosenthal is not, and never will be ASP, and to condemn him for such is unjust. ASP and team left, and I for one am greatful that DR had the guts to take on such a huge task. We need a season 8 to give him the chance to show us what he's got. I know I'll be watching.

Long live Gilmore Girls

Season 8 or bust.

The CW needs this show as much as the fans want it. Let's hope that both sides (network and cast) can come to a fair agreement.

I feel like there is too little time for all the issues and storylines to be completed. I have been a dedicated viewer since season 2 and to have to say if the show ends this season I would feel cheated. Cheated out the ending it truly deserves. David Rosenthal has shown to viewers how much these characters have really matured and I would love to see what else he could have in story for these beloved characters.

Gilmore Girls Forever!!

Cheri said:

I really hope that there will be one more season or even a shortened season so that what everyone, well all most everyone, has been waiting for since the first show can be properly done. There was that vibe right from that first cup of coffee being served that Lorelai and Luke were meant to be together. We have been waiting for this to really happen and develope into a real, fairly happy, marriage. Not just a "feeling" that it might happen, or to have it rushed into without really working out what has happened during this time that Lorelai and Luke have been apart. And Rory has been working so long to become a real journalist that it would be really great if we can see her get a good job and go out in the field to get some good stories. I know that in the real world you have to work your way up and prove yourself before you get the good stories, but it would be great if we can see her get her "feet wet" by getting her start in that direction.

I hope that everyone can come to an agreement on keeping the show going into an eighth season and let these characters achieve what the show started them working towards.

In my mind, "Gilmore Girls" is the best show on the CW even with all of the changes. DR and the writers were given a very tough situation to work out of and I feel that they are doing a great job in getting the show back on the right track, especially with these past few shows. I can't wait to see what the rest of this season will give us and hopefully an eighth season too.

Love "Gilmore Girls" and everyone in it.

Cheri

Stefanie said:

I agree with everything that Cheri has said. Just copy and paste that here ->....

Gilmore Girls is a part of my life and I'm not ready to let it go yet. All the fans will feel cheated if it ends after this season. I am all for even just 15 episodes if this is all the actors and network can agree on; just more time. People are saying that the show will lose more than gain if there is a season 8 and I completely disagree. Many shows prolong the series for network reasons and money reasons, but this show needs to continue for the sake of the characters. We have invested so much into the lives of every single character on this show and I feel like their journey isn't finished.

I want to see Rory just starting out as a journalist, which could be the most interesting plot for her in the show. Since episode 2 she was going to be a journalist and now we aren't going to see her pursue this post graduation. Lorelai and Luke, destined since day 1, and we aren't going to get to see them married and starting to spend the rest of their lives together. Lorelai has always been independent and a wonderful role model for making it with no help from anyone, but everyone needs that person, that one person who makes them feel safe. I want to see her safe and comforted. We all want to see her sincerly happy. The past year she hasn't been truly happy. She has been confused and struggling and we want to see not just the point where everything works out, but where it takes her. I don't want to just imagine it, but experience it along with her. Yes Rory graduates, but show us the path she travels after. Yes Luke and Lorelai will end up getting back together, but what happens after? Lane and Zack, yes they will have twins, but I want to see them get a record deal, have a cd, they have been working towards this goal, I want them to succeed. Their goal was not to just have a family, they are more than that. The Emily and Lorelai storyline has so much more to venture into.

The characters on this show are more than just something for us to watch for an hour a week. We sincerly care about what happens with these characters and this town, and ending the show after season 7 would not be justified. A season 8 is needed and we are not asking for a 3 year contract, just one year to wrap up this amazing show in a good amount of time. We see what the writters can venture into in season 8. We are not just wanting to prolong a story going no where because its this fun little show we love at the moment and people will forget about in 5 years. This show is in our hearts. One more season that is all we ask.

Gilmore Girls is one of the best shows on television. Us viewers have learned to love and cherish its witty characters. We've viewed the ups and downs of each moving relationship on the show as well. I can't imagine a Tuesday where there isn't a new episode on the air. Fans watch the show religiously. Stars Hollow is the close-knit town that every person wishes to be a part of. We all in some way would love to partake in a Dance Marathon, a Living Arts Picture Show, or a Firelight Festival. We'd all love to meet the stunning yet ecentric characters, such as Lorelai, Rory, Luke, Kirk, or Miss Patty. It is rare for a show to create such an astounding mother-daughter relationship as Lorelai and Rory Gilmore's. This is proof alone that this show should not be cancelled.

Seven seasons is not enough. Everything needs to be fixed and wrapped up. This season, at least in my point of view, has been a prolonging of Lorelai's bad decisions that she is finally beginning to face. The viewers need to see Lorelai and Luke get back together as well. We watched the two become best friends over the years. Luke saw her face, hey walzed and held still for the world to see. It was the television relationship that everyone cherished. And everything fell apart. We need to see it be put back together again. we need to see them repair their relationship and get back together. The fans need that closure, and it cannot be done in the short 6 episodes that are left to air in season seven. Season eight must exist for Gilmore Girls. It is needed. Please consider it. I can't imagine my life without it. Thank you.

Let me put my little two cents in this debate. Of course we (GG fans) need an eighth season. I personally own all the first 6 seasons on DVD and I have to admit that ASP dropped the ball in Season 6. The characters were vague shadows of their former selves and Mr. Rosenthal is doing a good job bringing back all of the GG characters and personas to those we know and love. The folks at the CW network need to understand that there is plenty of support for an eighth season. The loyal fans deserve it and with Lauren Graham as a sometimes producer, I predict higher and higher ratings. Are you listening CW network??

Laura said:

Yay for a Great8Mandate mention! I feel very strongly about Gilmore Girls havign another season. Like many people, I feel the storylines need time to be wrapped up nicely. I think if it ends this year, it will seem to rushed. David Rosenthal has done a great job as of late, and I feel like he could make the show even better if he doesn't have to rush the plots. There are either 6 or 7 episodes left. If this is the last season, that is not enough time to have Luke and Lorelai back together, we won't see Rory in the real world, we won't see Lane and Zach as parents for that long, and Sookie most definitely cannot have her baby. There are plenty of people out there that want an 8th season, it's just about getting out voices out there so the CW knows there is support. The fact that Lauren Graham was made a producer gives me more hope that an 8th season will happen, but if Alexis or the CW don't want to continue, then that's the end of it. To conclude my babbling, I really hope this great article you wrote will give the Great8Mandate more support and recognition. Please, just 1 more year!!!

"I love the show and I love the character but I'm tired of doing those hours - it's a 12-hour-day. I have missed people's weddings, I have missed babies being born, I don't see my friends that much and that's no way to live."

Is this real or just a way of asking for more money? I don't know. I'm just a girl who can't imagine life without this show. Please, hold on for another, great season. PLEASE!!!

Gilmore Girls is honestly one of the better television shows out there. It's brought mothers and daughters together in bonding. It was this mother-daughter bonding time between my aunt and cousin who watched Gilmore Girls relgiously every Tuesday that first introduced me to the show. Since then, I have seen every episode to date, all of them at least three times. In the two and a half years since I was introduced to Lorelai, Luke, Rory and the rest of the characters, they've all found special places in my heart. I've fallen in love with the quirkiness that is Stars Hollow, the rapid fire dialouge, and the witty pop culture references. Dave Rosenthal has done a marvelous job this season, and I really have to give him credit for picking up the show when it was left in a very bad spot. I like his style, almost as much as the Palladino's, and hope and pray that we as fans can get one more season. One more season to see Luke and Lorelai's relationship get back on track, to see Rory out in the real world as a journalist, and to see the relationship between April and the Gilmore Girls blossom. If the show ends this season, we would never be able to see that. We need just one more to wrap up all the story lines effectively. Please, give us Season 8!

I first started watching "GG"-- as I refer to it-- when I was in college. I was hooked almost from the first episode. This is my favorite show and one of only two television shows for which I own the DVD's. (The other being "Firefly" and my husband and I got that as a wedding present.) I love the show so much, that when my now husband and I went to Connecticut I made him drive us through Washington and Washington Depot just so I could see where Amy's inspiration came from!

I have been responsible for making several fans of the show, even a new one in my friend, Sara, and I think the show can still retain an audience. But this will only happen if its allowed to continue. We need to see as many of the story threads tied and knotted as is possible. And that will not happen with a rushed ending. I know Amy Sherman-Palladino left David Rosenthal with a lot to complete and I think he's trying. Now that he's being allowed to really do his own story archs and not just complete Amy's, I think we may be able to see things get back on track.

What I love about this show is the witty banter, the delightful characters, and the sense of place. Stars Hollow feels like an exagerated, quirkier version of many a New England town. The warmth and depth of this show is unlike anything I've watched anywhere else and it should be applauded. There are pages upon pages of stories here and not enough time to finish them. I'd like to echo earlier comments by saying this: please let us finish at least one.

As one of the minorities (guys) that watch the show, I am asked by people: "What do you see in that show?" It's a tough question to answer, but I see a show where the actors are excellent, the scripts are good (and getting better), and I see a fun way to get away from reality on a Tuesday night.

I really hope that the show is extended to an 8th season.

I love Gilmore Girls! Of all the TV I watch, and I watch enough to be embarrased by the amount, it is a show that even on it's worst day is better than three quarters of the rest.

These characters have become our friends. To try to wrap up their lives in a satisfactory manor using just the few remaining episodes of this season would be impossible. It would also be unfair. Not only to us, but to the characters and the actors that have spent the last 7 years of their life developing them.

Lorelia, Rory, Emily, Luke, Richard, Logan, Sookie, Lane, Ms. Patty, Kirk, Michele, Babette, Jackson, Zach. They came into our lives and made it richer. Please don't deprive us of watching them come full circle.

i so agree! We need another season. It would be such a SHAME if a great and fab show like Gilmore Girls is wrapped up in a hurry and not in a respectful manner. We totally need a 8th season. Cause right now there are so many things starting, lane/zack and babies, a very possible Luke and Lorelai (again, but this time he has all ready gotten to know April and hopefully it’ll work out this time around) and then there is Rory and her post college life… where will she go? Grad-school, work? We totally! Need a season 8!

Besides a show like charmed got an 8th season ( no offence)so why not GG? it has great actors! great writing!great characters and it has a charm and a good feel to it. and now we are even rid of christopher ;) (no offence, again :P)

And the point about The CW needing the Gilmore Girls, so true!

Although the first few episodes of season 7 left me cold, I've grown to appreciate the show again, and I really want to be able to relish the admittedly inevitable Luke and Lorelai reunion. Also, it's silly, but if GG ended with Season 8, it would coincide perfectly with the end of my undergrad career, and since the show began with my first year of high school, I'd love to say goodbye to Rory and Lorelai when I graduate, for sentimental reasons. GG is very dear to my heart, and loyal fans deserve a graceful finish.

This is a sample of the letter I'm sending- Why would a fan like me send a letter with so many complaints and hope for another season? Good question. Because all the better to end the show with my dear. Seriously, with this season sucking so badly there’s very little chance the series will conclude with the kind of ending that this amazing series deserves. There won’t be enough closure and it won’t go out on top…. not even in the middle. There won’t be as many viewers as what would be. However, with an 8th season there is a chance for some real big changes.

With the slow improvement by the writing staff, by the time shoots start for next season they should have the storylines straightened out and stronger than before. If they continue to think outside the box they can create better plots for Rory. Lorelai could get away from the way her character has been portrayed as weak and selfish, back onto being strong and caring for other people while not being afraid to speak her mind. Luke can go back to the good old grumpish Luke who is there for Lorelai with a sharp tongue. Who fights with Taylor and serves Lorelai coffee at his diner.

What I’m eagerly excited to see more than anything else is a possible wedding and/or baby. God, just think of the ratings! I’m sure they would be the highest ratings of the past two years. It would be talked about for years to come and it would definitely end the series where we know for sure how things will turn out. It will go out with a bang.

I could think of some great storylines for an 8th season right now. If I could right episodes for the show I would run right over. But I can’t and I have to rely on the real writers.

JillianLovesFood said:

Oops, sorry I posted above before I got a chance to proof read. I wanted to add that with many other fans, one of the reasons why I tune in to Gilmore Girls is because Lorelai and Luke. This year they have been shanghi'd and it's one of the many reasons also why this season sucks.

With an 8th season there's hope that they will get back together and their relationship will be where it was supposed to be even before Amy left. The hope for the wedding/baby was directed at Lorelai and Luke.

I am another Australian fan of Gilmore Girls and can't see my favourite show ending at the end of the seventh season. We need an eighth season to see Luke and Lorelai reunited and the relationship developed rather than rushing this inot the final few episodes of season 7. Gilmore Girls throughout all its seasons has been a higher quality show than many others on tv in America or Australia. The smart characters, dialogue and plot lines have made this a show that I have followed for many years. While other shows have contained stupid or stereotypical party teenagers this show showed a smart girl in Rory who valued education and good morals. It shows many girls and women that to be intelligent and funny is something that should be valued. Maybe this season has dipped a bit in quality but it has had these small dips before and has consistantly got back on its feet. It just needs the chance and our support. The show benefits greatly from the repartee exchanged between Luke and Lorelai and we deserve the chance to see this again for a decent amount of time.

thankyou so much for mentioning the Great8mandate and all we are fighting for.

Un like many of the others i feel that the show is still strong and that the changes we have seen are mainly because the story lines change and the characters grow up and so does the show and they are not due to poor wrighting.

i feel that it is on its way to become a great season with the story lines we have seen so far but i am with the others when they say ther just isnt enough time to see what has been evolving from the first episode.
-Luke and Lorelai
-Rory getting a job in Journalisim.
and the new plots
-rory and logans relationship
-Lane and Zack and there babys
-sookie and jacksons family growing.
-the dragonfly inn.

all of these things cant just end in a few episodes.

if the isue with Alexis and Lauren is the long days then could it be posible for the wrighters and producers to bring us more of the secondary characters, in my oppinion they make the show great to watch and i am sometimes disupointed at how little we see of them.

we have barly seen Sookie and Lane this season and i shure would love to see more of there characters.
especialy if this eases the work load for Alexis and Lauren and alows them to continue for another year.

just my thoughts on the matter.
thanks again for helping spread the word.

I am just starting to get back into the show. It got way off track at the end of season 6.

DR had quite the job ahead of him trying to get that wreck of a storyline back in working order.

I can see the light at the end of the tunnel (to keep the train example going) and the show is finally starting to be fun and interesting again.

We definately need one more season.

No! No! No! Ending Gilmore Girls after this season? It can not be. I absolutely love the show. There has got to be something that can be done!

Come on Lauren and Alexis and the rest of the GG crew, what will it take to get you to agree to give us more?

We are desperate here. How can we possibly go back to ordinary television programming after this? We are not ready for that reality. Please give us at least one more season to adjust!

Gilmore Girls is great, and seeing as it is just as much the fans as the actors and writers that make a show what it is, it seems really unfair to leave the show in a hurried and "thrown together" state. Those of us who have waited for the Luke and Lorelai story to play out, even after having it ripped away 2 times, deserve to see the thing come full circle. How hard could it be to have just one more season?

I'm going to make this really short...
Please Please Please Please Please just give us ONE more season. Having an 8th season would really give the show a chance to wrap up. It gives us viewers a sense of closure, if that makes any sense at all. I've been watching this show for the past 7 years and honestly it has brought me and my mom closer together since the first episode.

Thank you

I need Gilmore Girls more than Gilmore Girls needs me!

Please, please, please, please make an 8th season!!

We watched Luke and Lorelai build up to a relationship for 4 seasons. We finally get it, and then its ripped away. We were forced to watch Chris and Lorelai coo over each other for a nauseating 12ish episodes (aka FAR TOO LONG)...We're owed a 'middle'. A well written, season 8 middle.

Thank you thank you thank you for mentioning the mandate! You've spread the word, sir! You're my hero!
And we HAVE to have another season! I just recently started watching the fifth season over (gotta love dvd box sets) and Luke & Lorelai have GOT to get back together! It's so obvious! Have you ever watched the fifth season? It's fast become my favourite season ever.
Anyways, thanks again for mentioning the mandate. You are definately my hero!!

I hope the CW is listening to everything we die-hards have to say...

To wrap up the L&L romance in the last few episodes would be criminal. We've been waiting so long to see them together. We deserve another season!

PLEASE HEAR US CW!!!

I would like to share my feelings about Gilmore Girls. To me, it is not just an hour that I spend in front of the TV watching another network’s teeny-bopper, soap opera-like sitcom. Gilmore Girls is something so different, something so much more amazing than any other show on TV. Period.

Gilmore Girls has brought me hope and laughter and inspirational during the last 7 years. Let me explain…..I am a twenty-something year old, never married, mother of an amazing 7 year old. I can relate to the character Lorelai. Watching the show has helped me to feel “ok” with being a single mom, and has inspired me to have a special bond and close friendship with my daughter. She loves Gilmore Girls just as much as I do, and we truly hope that the show will not end with only 7 seasons.

We need an 8th season- maybe lets scale down to at least a half season......

Thanks for making this mention of the fans' desire to have the show return for one more season. I hope everyone at the CW and WB studios are taking notice of this effort.

Gilmore Girls has been one of my favorite shows for almost seven years now, and I'm still not ready to let it go. It's still witty and full of heart and great characters.

After the initial slump in the end of last season and early this season, it's starting to find it's way again. I hope that David Rosenthal will be able to have an 8th season so that Gilmore can go out on top with a great all around season that the fans can look back on fondly, instead of this bumpy, rushed season.

Thank you very much for publicizing the plea to keep Gilmore Girls going another season! I have been a dedicated fan to this show for a while now. Being a 38 year old single mom I can relate to Lorelai and am inspired by her open and honest relationship with Rory. I look forward each week to spend my Tuesday nights in Stars Hollow!

Because the changes in the story lines, writers and characters personalities from season six to season seven have been so drastic, the first part of season seven was such an adjustment. Now the show is starting to turn around to the quirky characters we know and love with their witty banter, there are not many episodes left of this season. We need another season to see how the characters and their story lines play out.

As a member of GilmoreGirls.org, I feel I need to do my part and support the Great8mandate!

Thank you so much for writing this article! It really shows how many people want Gilmore Girls to continue on with an 8th season.

I have watched this show for what seems like forever now.I own every season on DVD and watch it all the time! I can't wait for every Tuesday at 8:00 to come, because I know that there is something crazy going to happen in the Gilmore World. So to have it all end so suddenly would kill every Gilmore fan out there!! There has to be a season 8 so we can all see what happens in our respective favorite character's life. It would be so unfair to see my favorite show on television just end badly after 7 years.

I support the Great8Mandate and I appreciate you sharing this with the world! Well the TV World that is!

I am a die hard GG fan who not only loved this season (even though I'm a huge Luke and Lorelai fan) but all those before and most likely all those to come. This show will never be something I could hate or be dissapointed in, it will never be a chore to watch and I would love another season to watch and smile at and love.

Gilmore Girls must go on another season, it is the most amazing and smart show on earth, the storyline is wonderful even if sometimes painful to watch! The acting is phenominal, it is the best I've ever seen and why they dont get more attention from award givers, I will never know!

I love this show and will never stop loving it. I completely support GG season 8 and the Great8Mandate! Please make our work worth while!

I don't think the show should go on for another year because the only thing that fans really want to see in an eighth season is Luke and Lorelai having a happy marriage. But that's not a plot. An entire eighth season would need conflict to go somewhere creatively, but it's too late in the show to add new conflicts/problems. If need be, end this season with a flash forward where we can see Luke and Lorelai's marriage and a bit of Rory's career. There's just not enough material in those things to fill a whole eighth season.

Amy, thats not true. We could see what Rory does after Yale, her lovelife, her job and there are lots of towns people that we would like to see plus Luke and Lorelais "middle". There is much more that could be done in season 8 then just a marriage. Even if it just 13 episodes, there should defiently be a eighth season, Chris/Lorelai fans got what they wanted , its time for the luke/lorelai fans to get what they want ( and not just in 2 episodes)

Think about a show like 7th heaven which is on its tenth year, and a great show like gilmore girls only gets 7? It seems very un just to me!

How on earth will they leave off this show and never come back in just a few months? Unless they want to completly butcher the rest of the show, which is also unfair to have a bad last few months, they really need to continue!!

Jessi said:

i feel a bit ridiculous, begging for this on a blog, but please please please please give me a season eight! i've been a fan since the beginning, watch every new episode and the reruns on abc family, ive actually requested tuesdays off work to watch gilmore girls, and im not some teenager either. i have my boyfriend hooked. there is no other show on television where someone would give joe strummer's leather jacket as a gift, name their dog paul anka, have a character like kirk, or like any of the citizens of stars hollow. season seven is getting better and better, i love seeing the relationship between lorelai and emily grow, seeing more sides of luke, watching rory go out into the world. there isnt enough time left in season seven to wrap this up in a satisfactory matter that honors these characters weve watched for years. there isnt another television show with intelligent independent female characters who care more about each other and their place in the world than about men. please dont take this away so unceremoniously.

Linda said:

I need to add my voice to the chorus -- Besides Gilmore Girls being excellent, dramatic, funny and smart entertainment, it is also wonderful to see strong, independent female characters as the leads.

I think it is needless to say there are many, many more story lines that can be embarked upon without belaboring the show -- my personal favorite idea is that after Luke and Lorelai eventually reconcile and marry, Lorelai soon discovers she is pregnant. It would be great fun to watch her raise a baby (remember how funny it was to watch her indulge Paul Anka in the beginning, she even posted lists of his preferences on the refrigerator?!?)

In the meantime, Rory gets established in a great job, meets her significant other and is surprised when she discovers she is pregnant as well... it would be great watching Lorelai and Rory raise their children side-by-side and pairing the two of them together again like they were in the first couple of seasons!

Emily must be included in a big way too as she's about my favorite character... so I suggest she and Lorelai have by this time finally learned to get along and actually enjoy each other, so when it's time for Lorelai and Rory to return to work, Emily becomes babysitter for her grandchild and great-grandchild (of course, she will be hiring a new Nanny every week!) She's such a talented actress, and she can be so funny, she would be delightful in that type of role! There is a lot they can do with her.. maybe she decides she needs to "be out in the world" and gets a job (or a new job every week - how funny that could be!)

Ending the show now would be way too traumatic! It's sort of like losing a book you've been thoroughly enjoying before you finish the last chapter; the major difference is that a book doesn't take seven years to read! We've invested a great deal in this show - just imagine all the love, laughter, and pain we've experienced with these wonderful characters, and now it seems they may just be torn from our lives without a proper goodbye.

What would we do with our GG dvd collections? Why watch them if we know there isn't a satisfactory ending??

My last thought is about the actors, especially Alexis, as from what we've heard she seems to be reluctant to continue with the program... It's hard for me to think that she could be so unappreciative of the fame and fortune GG and GG fans have given her... I can easily think of a dozen actors who walked away from successful programs and were never heard from again. Alexis was virtually unheard of before this show (just some modelling I believe) and I think it would be so selfish of her to just take the money and run now! I guess it especially hurts because the character she plays is so thoughtful and giving... apparently quite a contrast from the real Alexis.

as (nearly) everyone before i have to say one thing: I WANT THE SHOW TO GO ON.

just as lorelai can't live without coffe, i cant't without the gilmores.
i have to say that all of my friends are addcited, too. we do never go out on tuesdays (the day gg is aired in germany) and we always talk about what has happened on the show.

i cannot imagine how it would look like without the gilmores...

there is another reason that the show must go on:

there are so many people all around the world begging for another season so how in gods name could the network and the cast ignore all these? the show was made for us and now they ignore our opinion???

They have to go on! i love the cast and the story and even DR...

GO ON, GO ON, GO ON!!!

thank you, claudi

Wow! I am so sad that the show may be over soon. I had no idea. I need to see L&L reunite. It is always the same just like Jag, oops out of time! well just throw them together in the last show and call it a day. Please take an 8th season and do it slowly. I have been faithfully watching, and will continue as long as you allow me to.

Thanks for everything up to this point and hopefully through season eight.

I truly hope that they give us a season 8. I believe that fans have been cheated this season throwing so many episodes with Chris - what a waste. We have watched Luke & Lor for years to just find ourselves watching Chris, the immature, irresponsible, self-centered whiner wins Loralai over to marriage. That has never been believable, so pls give us a Season 8 of Luke&Lor and their marriage, pregnancy, baby - SH folk creating so many plots and subplots around the Luke and Lor union with child. Luke with his own "baby". The April storyline I could have done without as well. Please give us a Season 8. I sincerely hope that the actors and producers do not cheat devoted fans of GG and Stars Hollow out of a Season 8 with more Luke w Lor, Sookie and Jackson, Lor's parents, the eccentric town folk and let Rory (Alexis) just come to town now and then if she wants to leave the show. I hate that she'd leave, but the fans deserve to have more episodes with Luke and Lor not just getting back together but seeing them start a family and a so many new adventures. We waited 7 years for L & L, not for Lor and Chris. Send Chris packing please.

This show cannot be ended like this. Gilmore Girls is a staple in my day and many others, and rushing it, attempting to tie it up in one neat package is just not doing the show justice.

PLEASE.
THIS SHOW IS MY OXYGEN (that I take with my coffee ;D )

SEASON EIGHT!!

(Oh, and NO Chris and Lor. It's Luke And Lorelai all the way.)

I have been watching GG ever since it aired the pilot show. 7 years I have laughed, cried, and grown with the characters. I feel a horrible sense of loss now that the show is over, and do hope they will return for an 8th season. So many stones were left unturned, it was a very unsatisfying end to such a great series.
