"Weeds" fires up
Tonight, as it slouches towards next week’s Babylonian season-three finale, “Weeds” has hit upon a particularly incendiary storyline, given Southern California’s woes of late: A wildfire, to which Nancy (Mary-Louise Parker) is somewhat tied, threatens Majestic (formerly Agrestic).
Showtime’s Richard Licata sent out a letter with the final episodes:
“Please be aware that … there is a storyline that deals with a wildfire which affects the main characters. These episodes were written and filmed this past summer, long before Southern California experienced a real-life tragedy.
“On behalf of the cast and crew of ‘Weeds’ and everyone at Showtime, I’d like to acknowledge the thousands of families who’ve been affected by the devastating fires.
“Truly, our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
If they had just waited a couple of months, they could’ve spared themselves the expense of inserting computer-generated images of the fires looming over Nancy’s neighborhood.
Anyway, not to give too much away, but these episodes kind of pretty much tear up the show’s premise and start over from scratch: Any season-four storyline that returns to the status quo in Majestic/Agrestic will require so much explanation that the season would be half over before anyone would begin to buy it. They didn’t really give the Nancy-in-business-with-Celia (Elizabeth Perkins) storyline much room to flourish or fester, but maybe that’s not a terrible thing. And anything that gets Kevin Nealon’s unpalatable Doug off the TV screen is OK in my book.
