More Olson and Position Changes
Ben Olson was expected to win the job, outperformed Patrick Cowan and finally was named starter. He said he was told about it Sunday night by offensive coordinator Jim Svoboda, and then added coach Karl Dorrell talked to him about it Monday.
But what should the expectations be?
In my mind, not very high at the beginning. Olson hasn't thrown a meaningful pass in nearly five years. Defenses will be working overtime in an effort to confuse him. On the heels of Drew Olson throwing 34 touchdown passes and six interceptions last season, expectations for Ben Olson could be off the charts. If emails I've received from fans the last eight months are any indication, fans' expectations are way too high.
I think it will be an up and down year for Olson, and nobody will get a true indication of how good he can be until next season.
What are Dorrell's expecations?
"I know what my expecations are,'' Dorrell said. "I don't know what's going on outside of the program, but I know what my expectation are. I want a guy that can operate our offense. That's all that my expecations are. That's not going to change.''
In other news, freshmen tailbacks Jeremy McGee and Christian Ramirez were moved to the secondary. McGee will play cornerback and Ramirez will play free safety. Both played there in high school and both will remain there this season. Don't be surprised, though, if McGee is back at tailback next season.
The switches were made because the Bruins lost cornerbacks Matt Slater (shoulder) and Michael Norris (knee) to injuries in Saturday's scrimmage. That's on top of safety Robert Kibble (MS) being out indefinitely, so the Bruins were in trouble with their depth.
Intrestingly, in Monday's morning session tailbacks Kahlil Bell and Derrick Williams each left early with injuries. Bell was back for the afternoon practice, but Williams' bad hamstring left him out. Even so, Dorrell said neither McGee nor Ramirez would go back to running back.
And not coincidentally, fullback/tailback Chane Moline has impressed the coaching staff. Look for him to be a solid short-yardage back in the style of former Bruin Manuel White.

Game-by-game expectations:
Game 1: Utah - This might be close, but UCLA wins on talent, 1-0.
Game 2: Rice - Empty the bench, 2-0.
Game 3: @ UW - Huskies have major problems, 3-0.
Game 4: Stanford - This game would be close in Palo Alto, but not at the Rose Bowl, 4-0.
Game 5: Arizona - Bruins do not match up well against physical teams that play defense, 4-1.
Game 6: @ Oregon - Beavers get revenge from 2 years ago, 4-2.
Game 7: @ Notre Dame - Closer than people might expect esp. since ND defense is weak, 4-3.
Game 8: WSU - Our new DC isn't going to let Jason Hill beat us, 5-3.
Game 9: @ Cal - Last year we outscored them, this year we beat them with defense, 6-3.
Game 10: OSU - Mat Moore makes too many mistakes, 7-3.
Game 11: @ ASU - The Sun Devils are like the 2005 Bruins, lots of points but no defense, 8-3.
Game 12: USC - If we can't beat them this year..., 9-3.
In my hypothetical scenario I have us loose to Oregon & Notre Dame early and then rebound to beat Cal & USC. It might not turn out this way, but I am expecting a team that is better at the end of the season compared with at the beginning (no late-season blow-outs like last year).
