Personnel updates
The Bruins began preparations for the Sept. 2 opener against Utah, which means the scout teams were unveiled. Just to let you know how little depth UCLA has in the secondary because of injuries and not recruiting the position heavily, two linebackers served as scout-team safeties. One interesting note on the offensive scout team was the presence of freshman receiver Dominique Johnson. Bruins coach Karl Dorrell said last week Johnson had a chance to help out this season, but relegation on the scout teams means Johnson likely will red-shirt.
After practice cornerback/nickel back Michael Norris said his injured right knee was feeling much better. He said the swelling was down and much of the pain subsided. He was diagnosed with a partially torn posterior cruciate ligament, but will not need surgery. Norris was also confident he would be able to play during the first month of the season. He is aiming for Utah, but it may make sense for him to sit against Utah and Rice, then take on the bye week before playing at Washington. That would give him time to mend, but he remains targeted on the opener and challenging freshman Alterraun Verner for the top nickel back spot.

Brian,
Give me your impressions of the linebakers as a group. Who has a chance to be special? Who do you project to be the starters by the beginning of Pac-10 play?
Thanks Dohnster.

What are your thoughts about D. Johnson? The guy looks huge. Is he a tweener (tight end v. wide receiver)?

I have never been much of a football person (I was the runt in school and tended to non sports activity). I have a son who is a football walk-on at UCLA and will be on the scout team for another year. He seems a bit discouraged that he is not on the depth chart. I am very proud of him for being there, but have no idea what it really means. Any words of wisdom from those out there who understand better than I what he has accomplished (or not accomplished). Thanks!
