Wednesday's notes
UCLA coach Karl Dorrell said receiver Junior Taylor would wear his knee brace at least for the first two games because he is not medically cleared to play/practice without it. Dorrell said he an injured MCL when he played and needed to wear a brace, and it bothered him. ...
Reserve linebacker Eric McNeal didn't practice much, but it is due to his academic issue that will keep him out of Saturday's opener. McNeal has done the work to erase an incomplete, but the professor for the class has been in Europe for the last month and unable to review McNeal's work. The professor isn't due back into the country until Saturday, which is why it is expected McNeal would be ready for the second game of the season against Rice.
And by the way, Reggie Carter's rise to starter has nothing to do with McNeal's eligibility. ...
One thing UCLA needs to worry about against Utah is how they Bruins will get substitution packages in. It is defensive coordintaor DeWayne Walker's first game, and Utah uses plenty of different packages. UCLA plans to rotate plenty of defensive linemen into the game, so keep an eye on whether the Bruins get caught trying to make an ill-timed change.

Loved the blog! Do you expect Savage and Szierwerski to get any time, or are you talking about the 1st and 2nd team DL rotating in and out?

Brian: Does a win by UCLA Sat. propel them into the top 25? How do you explain their total lack of national respect in regards to the pre-season polls? I know they lost key players, but the UCLA name always garners some national recognition. What happened this year?

Typically you'd need a ranked team to lose for us to move up (assuming we win on Sat) and given that we didn't even recieve an AP vote, we'd probably need to blow Utah out and would also need Tennessee to lose and probably TCU as well. It's not important though. Win Saturday and worry about the polls later.
