Game thoughts
A few things that crossed my mind as I watched Oregon's 30-20 win.
1) Although defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker took the rap for the poor first quarter, there seemed to be many questions as to whether this defense reverted back to last year's form. I don't think so, mainly because Walker made the adjustments by the start of the second quarter, and the defense played well after that. The tackling issue was the most glaring problem, so I imagine there will be plenty of tackling drills in practice next week.
2) It doesn't matter whether Ben Olson or Patrick Cowan are playing quarterback, it's clear any first-year playing quarterback is going to have some difficulties in this system.
3) UCLA is still looking for a game-breaking receiver, and may continue to look for the rest of the season. When the longest pass play is 14 yards, that is a problem because it enables the secondary and linebackers to creep ever-so-closely to the line of scrimmage.
4) Why isn't Terrence Austin being used in the offense? Alas, I will find out early next week and let you folks know.

Perhaps you can follow up to my email to you and ask the Coach why he thinks that effectively surrendering with 4 minutes to go is acceptable? It breeds a poor attitude; it reeks of mediocrity; it isn't how champions think; and it looked horrible on TV. Every coach I've ever seen get blown out, even by us in the Rose Bowl, at least still fights until the bell sounds. Karl quit and it stunk and was disgusting to watch. I'm sure Everson Griffen will want to join Karl now. Karl made fools of UCLA on television.

One thing that I have not read was the terrible officiating:
Van pass interference-highly questionable.
Whitington P.I.-no way.
Brown ruffing the kicker-no-running into the kicker yes.
Hitting to to Cowan's head on a sack-no call
Late hit on Cowan by Manley-no call.
And the best for last Stewart's none fumble first down-Correct call, no fumble, UCLA takes over on downs.
I know you you are going to miss some calls, but come on. Some of these mistakes resulted in Oregon scores.
And lastly if I may, could you pose a question to Coach Dorrell why Medlock keeps kicking off short?
Are we that good that we can spot teams a shorten field?
Thanks for letting me vent.

Any thoughts on the officiating?

Brian -
It's been posted online on one of the boards that some of the Bruins were smiling and generally not looking too upset on the sidelines during the 4th quarter of yesterday's game. Do you have any knowledge of this? Granted human beings are allowed to smile - even in depressing situations - but given the "we want to show the world how good we are" line taken by the Bruins this week, it seems odd that players would be so happy as this game came to an end. That is, if the reports are true. Any thoughts?

What crossed my mind - coaching was very poor, particularly in the 4th quarter, with the decision to punt, and then after a fortuitous fumble return, huddling at the 3 yard line with 2 minutes to go. Where was the urgency, and at least trying to win the game? That punt and the ensuing time wasted sent a very bad message to the team.
Further to coaching, where was Dorrell on that horrible UO first down at the 33, when it was properly ruled that the UO RB did not fumble, but also was nowhere near the first down marker?
This was a disappointing loss, as was the Washington collapse, and I am starting to seriously question my support of this coaching staff.
Your thoughts were right on the money as well.

Brian,
thanks for the insights. Some questions...
1. As some of the others have asked, your thoughts on teh surrender attitude in the 4th quarter?
2. Yes the officiating stunk. Don't care right now. If EVERY call went our way, we still lose.
3. Your thoughts on the affect of Kyle Bosworth playing instead of Taylor to start the game?
4. Please ask Dorrell why he doesn't adopt a go for broke approach when he is way behind. His O in the second half was Tom Osborne like for gosh sakes. Would love if you would ask KD when he would be willing to grow a set. If you won't would you ask Simers to ask him? (wink)
5. When does Rutgers come back to earth? And if their Bowl conflicts with UCLA's, which do you attend? (double wink)

Looks like a huge coaching issue to me. UCLA has an offensive cord. with no D1 experience. KD fires his D cord., then looks to the pros for a qualified candidate. This guy is getting the job done. O Cord leaves for the Nfl & KD promotes the QB coach. The bruins are playing
conservative, cautious offensive football, which probably brings no more than 6 wins a season. This O Cord is in over his head and should not be on staff with this program. Apparently, UCLA is happy with just trying to be a top 25 program. OOPs...forgot, the bruins can't even attain that. Well......there goes recruiting..again!

Thank God, most everyone believes UCLA is a basketball school, because what I watched Saturday was the head coach of the football team, give up and run the clock out. If the coaches are not willing to go to a no-huddle offense and play the full four quarters, it’s time for whoever is responsible to resign. Why would any recruit want to come and play for a coaching staff without the intestinal fortitude to stomp on their opponent and play for a national championship every second of every game? Karl, you’re a nice guy and everything but I don’t think you have what it takes to be the lead person. My patience has finally run out. I was upset after the Washington fiasco, now I’m thoroughly embarrassed for you as a coach and me as a UCLA fan.

For any sunshine pumpers out there: UCLA has played the easiest schedule in the PAC-10 so far. It's not even close! I'll say it now that Oregon is not a great team, and Bolloti(sp?)is not a great game day coach. They still smoked the Bruins.

Brian,
Do you think the results of the season up to this point are unexpected?
I expected UCLA to be either 4-3 or 5-1 at this point, but I have to admit that I didn't expect the drop off on O to be this big. In your opinion is the the scheme or the players?
