Monday update

Coach Karl Dorrell was very interesting today, and he addressed two of the key issues regarding the end of the game against Oregon.

First, there was a call in place for a fake punt with four minutes to go, but based on keys read by the signal caller on the line of scrimmage, the ball was punted. Dorrell said he didn't want to use a time out there because the Bruins only had one left, and he was hoping to use it at a later time.
Second, Patrick Cowan's voice loss was the result of being hit in the throat. Players were unable to hear Cowan in the huddle, and that began a factor when deciding whether to go no-huddle at the end of the game.

That does't cut it for me Brian. A fake only works if the other team believes you might punt, and punting in that situation was asinine.

Fine, he didn't surrender, but it was a TERRIBLE strategic decision.

And no huddle? Spike the ball.

I can't believe that hit Patrick took to the throat by Dexter Manley was a legal hit. It was after Cowan threw the ball. What type of tackling technique calls for the lineman to make a movement to the quarterback's throat to get him down?

This is almost as bad as the hit Ben Olson took against Arizona.

The only faking going on is Dorrell faking knowing what he is doing out there. I have a heck of a lot more respect for Coach Walker than
I do for Dorrell. At least instead of offering sorry excuses like Dorrell does, Coach Walker came right out and admitted he was out coached in the 1st quarter. Dorrell is becoming quite Bob Toledo-like when it comes to personal accountability for game time decisions. I am getting sick and tired of being out coached and the team looking spiritless (just like Dorrell)
Way to blame the signal caller for your team giving up at the end of the game.
Karl Dorrell will never beat Pete Carroll if the game comes down to coaching. I don't care if you are down 6 TD's, if you are not trying to score you are quitting.

Pete Carroll would never make excuses for mediocrity. Pete would assume the responsibility for not having his team ready to play all facets of the game. Step up and take the responsibility for bad coaching decisions, for bad play calling, for not having your team prepared to make called plays from the line of scrimmage, for players napping on kickoffs. Hopefully Bellotti's on-side kick taught you something about stomping on an opponent after a thorough beat down. Here’s the 911, for those who write to Brian, most UCLA fans know this team can be really good on both sides of the ball, where the frustration comes from is this Bruin team is seriously under achieving. It would be nice to see the people in charge step up and take at least a small part of the blame and not use excuses like sore throats and having fake punts lined up when there’s no time for fake punts or for that matter real punts. Most of us realize, last year’s 10 win season went to Atlanta with Coach Cable and may be gone for a long time.

That's it. I have given up hope for Karl Dorrell as UCLA's head football coach.

Calling a fake punt with around four minutes left in the game down by 17 points. Who is that going to fool?

Athletic Director Dan Guerrero better start looking for a replacement immediately!

Why no discussion of Austin not getting on the field?

Posted by: ReelBruin at October 16, 2006 09:15 PM

Austin, is still having problems with learning how to run routes.

Posted by: cv at October 17, 2006 09:14 AM

Then I will say this...The WCO is not right for college. Austin is our best hope as a playmaker at WR, and if it takes 2 seasons to get on the field, then why burn his RS? What a waste of his season!

I don't recall Tedford having these problems getting Desean Jackson on the field.

What a waste.

The offense that Cal runs is not as complicated. Then again Austin is not close to the same talent as Demean.
