Svoboda fired
UCLA head football coach Karl Dorrell today announced that offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Jim Svoboda has been relieved of his duties.
Svoboda, 46, had been a member of the Bruin coaching staff for three seasons. He served as quarterbacks coach in 2004 and 2005 and as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach during the 2006 season.
"This was a hard decision to make," said Dorrell. "Jim has done a good job working with our quarterbacks over the last three years. However, I felt that a change was in the best interests of the overall offense."

Now's the time for Karl to call in a personal favor to his good friend Rick. UCLA needs to pony up the cash and get Neuhisel and the Bruins back to where they belong.
Brian, now that Mora's been fired in ATL, what’s the status of Tom Cable?

We're looking at our 4th OC in 5 years. Karl Dorrell keeps firing assistant coaches because of under achievement, but at what point does the blame fall on him? Isn't this his west coast offense? People say to give Karl a chance, that those who have been critical are jumping on him too early in his career, that he's learning and growing as a coach, yet HE has no problem firing someone after 1 year on the job if they don't get results. I'd like to see Dan Guerrero adopt Karl's stance on employee management.

It's called a scapegoat. It's ultimately still CKD's offense, and he's the HC. When you are in over your head like Karl is, you take the CEO approach, and lay the blame at the Coordinators' feet.

Coach Dorrell deserves one more season for sure. He has a lot of returners and some good redshirts and a few good recruits. He made the right decision by showing Swaboda the road. But earlier he spoke up for him saying he "was learning". Say what!! Isn't that like the case of Coach Steve Lavin, learning on the job?
There are too many good OCs available. I would love to have Rick Neuheisel, too, but that might be too much of a threat for Dorrall himself.
Coach Dorrell's big impact has to be on selecting good caoches and getting top quality recruits. So far he has only one 5 star recruit for the '07 season, and his only other 5 star recruit is Ben Olson.
By the way, I did think Coach should have put Olson in later in the Emerald Bowl. The crowd would have gone nuts and we might have gotten back some momentun. At any rate that is what I would have done. As it is we were outcoached both on offence (what else is new) and defense (no blitzes - are you kiding me?!). The old 'nole made us look real bad.

You are an idiot Ranelar. I don't know where you get your knowledge of football from! When did he underachieve? If you read anything else besides the comics, you would have seen an article form CF news that had him as the Pac Ten coach of the year. They also had next year's team ranked number 9. ESPN has them ranked 20th next year.
Employee management? Let's fire head coaches every year because some stupid fan thinks so! Very funny. Next time you post, think a second and then log off!

Hi Scott,
Thank you for your eloquent response. Now to answer your question, this is how Karl Dorrell has underachieved (list taken from dumpdorrell.com)
Karl Dorrell’s Record (updated as of 12/27/06)
1. 1-3 against Southern Cal.
2. No Pac-10 championships.
3. No BCS bowl games.
4. 1-10 on the road against teams with a winning record.
5. Worst starting 3- AND 4-year record of any UCLA football coach since WW2, including Bob Toledo who was fired.
6. Worse winning percentage than Bob Toledo, who was fired.
7. 3-11 against ranked teams.
8. 2-7 against top 10 teams.
9. Only 6 conference wins against teams over .500.
10. 19-14 in the Pac-10.
11. 8-17 against teams with a winning record.
12. 10 losses to unranked teams.
13. He has a losing record after October, 6-12.
14. Embarrassing losses to Wyoming, Fresno State, Arizona, Washington State at home and Southern Cal.
15. Only 1 big game win.
16. Revolving door for assistant coaches.
17. 80% of Bruins fans polled on Bruinsnation.com disapprove of the job Karl Dorrell is doing.
Karl Dorrell has squandered talent. He created a QB controversy that forced Matt Moore to transfer. He sat Ben Olson when he was healthy, even after saying that starters shouldn't lose their jobs because of injury. He seemingly didn't know that Marcedes Lewis existed until the guy was a senior. He has never been able to put together a team with BOTH a good offense and good defense.
Furthermore, we had a pretty well stocked team in 2003 when he came in. Many people, including Sports Illustrated predicted that we'd be a major player in 2003 -- a contender for the Pac-10 crown, etc (Sports Illustrated). We finished 6-7 with a bad loss to Fresno St in the mud bowl. The next year we finished 6-6 with a really bad loss to Wyoming, a team that hadn’t even been to a bowl game in decades.
In 2005 we had a smoke and mirrors 10-2 season in which our players won DESPITE Karl Dorrell. We benefitted off of possibly the easiest schedule in the nation (in terms of who we had home and who we had away), and the pure talent of the nation’s best tight end, a quarterback who was playing out of his mind, and a running back who should have been this season’s NFL rookie of the year. We were exposed in our two BLOWOUT losses to Arizona (52-14 to a team whose only other wins were Northern Arizona and Oregon State) and sc (66-19). Just like Dorrell, I watched from the sideline as our players made amazing individual plays to pull off mind-boggling come backs, maybe I should have won co-Pac-10 COY.
This year we went 7-6 when we could have very easily been 11-2 (or 10-3 with a loss to a better bowl opponent). We were in control against Washington, Notre Dame, and Florida State; we should have won all those games. We also had no business losing to Washington State at home.
When Karl Dorrell came in, both he and Dan Guerrero stated that their goals were to win the Pac-10, go to BCS games, and be ranked in the top 20 year in and year out. None of those goals have been achieved after 4 years on the job.
That is how Karl Dorrell has underachieved.
I eagerly await your response.

Thank you Ranelar, for saving me the time of making the same exact post. I’m amazed Scott’s willingness to throw stones about your football prowess. Then I came to the conclusion Scott’s obviously a Trojan fan. With most SC fans, their worst nightmare would be to have Karl relieved of his duties. I don’t know any Bruin fan willing to make Scott’s argument and feel bold enough to drop the idiot bomb without being a fan of South Central.
Dan G. has the same list of under achievements you posted for this coach. UCLA fans need to realize there are many reasons for Dan not to pull the trigger. Dan is in a different political environment than the Priests at Notre Dame or Presidents at Alabama. At UCLA more is taken into consideration than just football (Education, Finances, Politics). This is why it’s important for Dan to put the pressure on Dorrell to replace Jim Svoboda with the most qualified individual to run this offense. You can win a National Championship being a mediocre coach if you surround yourself with greatness. The 2005 season and 10-2 record with one of the worst defenses in the country was a reflection of Tom Cable running the offense, not Dorrell.
Let’s understand the situation and make the best of it.
Let’s get qualified help in Westwood to win the whole enchilada and abandon the seven-year training plan for coaches.

Is Norm Chow available? Now that's a West Coast Offense and he can coach quarterbacks too.
