Savage update
Darius Savage said he wanted to go to a school where he could play football and also compete on the track and field team, and he is doing that and is performing well in the shot put.
Savage, if you remember, red-shirted as a defensive tackle for the football team. Last weekend during a meet in Flagstaff, Ariz., he threw an indoor personal record of 58 feet, 11 1/4 inches. It made him an NCAA provisional qualifier, and is the 27th best in the nation. However, that number is unlikely to land him in the NCAAs.
However, one by-product of Savage participating in track and field is his absence during spring football, which begins in April. The track season runs through mid-June, and Savage is devoted to that.
Missing football could cost Savage when August training camp begins. While Savage is with track and field, players such as Jess Ward, Jerzy Siewierski and Andy Keane will have a chance to move ahead of him on the depth chart.
Two other Bruin football players -- cornerback Rodney Van and receiver Terrence Austin -- contemplated competing with the track and field team, but ultimately decided to bypass it so they could concentrate and make an impact in spring football.
