Eric Scott hired

I'm hearing Eric Scott will be named UCLA's receivers coach later today. I'll have more later.

wow... looks like Duh-rell went all out.

hiring some former washed up player turned high school coach just to land a four star recruit (B Price). earth to Duh-rell! there are other ways to recruit than to burn precious tax payer dollars. for example, you can contact Wooden and ask if Sam Gilbert has any descendants currently living in the LA area.

nevertheless i hope Duh-rell gets a life time extension.... he is everything SC fans hoped for.

Eric Scott the intern??? Nice hire bruin fan.

Posted by: Mark at March 6, 2007 01:05 PM

this is a joke isn't it?

Posted by: mike morgan at March 6, 2007 01:08 PM

Is there any particular reason he was chosen?

It seemed to me that Brennan seemed to be a better candidate.

Posted by: uzair3_21 at March 6, 2007 02:05 PM

I think this is a great hire. Eric Scott has been considered an up-and-comer who will work his tail off in recruiting and is a quick learner. I know from past conversations with several coaches that the belief in Eric Scott becoming a very good coach is wide spread. He is a very bright guy who attended Northwestern before transferring to UCLA.

Posted by: Brian Dohn at March 6, 2007 03:23 PM

Thanks for answering the question.

BUt I think the most important one fans must be wondering is, what is KD doing?

Our WR's under him should be exceeding at their position. Instead, it was one of the weak links during the season.

Why hire a WR coach when KD is basically himself a WR coach?

Is KD not good enough?

Sorry for all these questions, but sometimes you just wonder what's going on behind closed doors.

Posted by: uzair3_21 at March 6, 2007 04:02 PM

maybe but not at this point especially when he had an ex-nfl assistant that wanted the job who is known as a great recruiter and a proven developer of wide receivers. Ask Danny Farmer what he thinks, he played with Escott and was coached by the coach i am referring too.

Posted by: mike morgan at March 6, 2007 04:02 PM

I beleive that this is a great hire that will pay much dividends for recruiting in the near future.

Posted by: Dave at March 6, 2007 04:15 PM

Why the hate on Eric Scott? It's just a position coaching job anyways, so experience in the collegiate and NFL levels aren't that crucial. Considering that UCLA has been out recruited by SC the last few years, the Bruins could use any edge they can get into top inner city schools. He was interning with UCLA this last year. Obviously Dorrell and staff saw some potential in Scott.

Besides, it's not like the last receiving coach, and former recruiting coordinator, was all that spectaular. Scott can only be an upgrade.

Posted by: CPBF at March 6, 2007 04:22 PM

COOL - Northwestern, UCLA, intern, great recruiter! Looks like a great hire. BRUINS!

Posted by: Denise at March 6, 2007 04:37 PM

He brings energy and he has inner city ties!!! Sweet!

Sam Gilbert? Toejam fans talk about that incident, which happen 30 years ago, when Weggie is make less money in the NFL than he was at SUC!

Posted by: Scott at March 6, 2007 04:49 PM

Usc fans will regret the day we hired Scott! Everything written about him is how hardworking he is and a hell of a recruiter!

Posted by: A+bruinfan at March 6, 2007 05:59 PM

This hire makes me want another glass of wine. I am truly stoked. The only thing I know about coach Scott is he has two first names and what has been written on this blog. Armed with that knowledge, I think we have the guy that can turn this program around. Wait, I'm sorry that would be th AD's job. That's the guy with only BB on the mind.

Before our friends from down south throw the, you have a pipeline to the iner city, we have a pipeline to the country, or any other unintelligent jibberish, stop now!!!! I just wanted to get it out there before they had a chance. So south central, simmer down.

With all that said, we're stuck with the coaching situation were in, lets make the best of it. Lets give Coach Scott a chance to coach up those wide recievers. The only good that may come out of this years coaching debacle, may be this guy is a great coach who can make a small difference and add a tad bit of committment to the program. Hopefully next years new head caoch will keep him around. I wouldn't burn any of his high school bridges just in case. Lots of history with this head coach.

People, lets not forget about the new explosive offense promised to us this year, with the new offensive coordinator and the new offensive line coach and now the new offensive reciever's coach and the new offensive water boy. This was the same explosive offense promised 4 years ago.

If we can beat the trojans with last years coaching hacks, just wait. It's all good. 35 -17

Just in case no one was watching, coach Karl was moonlighting on CSI Miami last night.

Cheers

Great hire. The Bruins have already made inroads in inner city recruiting under Coach KD, and Scottis just they guy that will push the bruins over the top in that area.
Trojans, you guys are rude and pathetic. Go find a rock to slime under. I love it how when you have no response to the Bruins manhandling your team defensively as well as winning the game, all you can come with is Duh-rell. How stupid did Pom Pom look towards the end of that game staring at his play list with his hand on his head as if to say "but...what do I do?"

Posted by: Michael at March 6, 2007 07:12 PM

As long as Scott is a good recruiter, I could care less about his ability to actually coach receivers.

Look at SC's coaches. All crap but pretty decent recruiters. However, they are horrible at developing talent. How many of Poodleboy's former players made All Pro ?

Jay -

You're right, Pete Carroll can't coach or develop talent....

Other than these stats:

2 National Championships
3 Heismans
5 Pac 10 Championships
65-12 (59-6 over the last 5 years)
4-1 in BCS games (how many does UCLA have?)
34 game winning streak
27 Pac 10 wins in row
5 top one, two or three recruiting classes (including 3 #1 classes in a row)
5-1 against the baby blues (including some ass kicking's like 66-19, 27-0, 52-21, 47-22)
6-0 against our real rivals ND (how'd UCLA do against them?)

Ya got lucky with one nice play last year against a team that had grown bored of the "rivalry". Other than that fluke, the baby bruins don't belong in the same breath as SC... So settle down, come to your senses and show some respect little man.

Some facts:

USC has been on a roll the past few years - no sober-minded Bruin fan can deny that.

UCLA, however, has quietly rolled up a 14-13-1 advantage in the rivalry since 1980.

UCLA defeated the Trojans 8 years in a row, an accomplishment that USC will most likely never match, especially since UCLA just snapped their 7-game winning streak.

Luck had absolutely nothing to do with UCLA's victory over the Trojans in December. Just ask SC's tackles who were so completely dominated by UCLA's quicker, faster DE's that they jumped offsides at least five times. Just ask SC's defensive backs who could not, for the life of them, get a bead on the crafty footwork of QB Patrick Cowan. Just ask Booty, who was so utterly flustered and confounded by UCLA's excellent, blitzing defense, and spent a good quality of time lying on his back staring up at the Goodyear blimp in the skies above the Rose Bowl.

No, UCLA did not get lucky, and USC did not lose: USC was beaten and outcoached by a better prepared, hungrier Bruin team and coaching staff. Eric's interception - to snap the Trojan's 7-year winning streak and knock them out of the national championship game - was simply the final great play by a more inspired, more disciplined UCLA squad.

Oh, and according to the most recent survey of ESPN.com readers, the SC-UCLA rivalry is ranked #7 in the top rivalries of college football. SC-ND? Ranked #11.

I find it kind of funny that all my SC alum relatives talked nothing about ND during UCLA's 8-year winning streak--only about winning back the crosstown rivalry. It's also funny how this year at Christmas they weren't talking about the ND rivalry--but about beating UCLA in '07.

Yes, USC is a phenomenal program, but the winds are changing in Los Angeles, and ol' Karl is now welcome in living rooms across the Southland when two years ago the doors were mostly open only to SC's coaches. Just ask Brian Price (despite SC's illegal tactic of sending a limo to the kid's school on signing day--a limo he refused to get into, classy kid that he is).

Can't you see the clock on the wall? Time's are changing in L.A., as witnessed by the following numbers: 13-9.

Is that a little bit of sweat I see on the brow of my SC friends? Why, I believe it is.

Go Bruins.

Carroll has had a remarkable run for college, and Carroll has had 4 or 5 #1 recruiting classes in his 6/7 years.

But how many of Carroll's players made All Pro in the NFL ??? Can you SC fans name more than 5 ? How about 4 ? How about 3 ?

Carroll's recruits peak during college then become busts at the next level. Some obviously peaked in high school. Luther Brown, Antwine Perez, Allan Bradford, Jeff Byers, Stafon Johnson, CJ Gable, Keith Rivers, Jeff Schweiger...all 5 star flops.

Posted by: Jay at March 8, 2007 09:28 AM

Oh please.... how could you say anything is changing for the better when you went from 10-2 two years ago to 7-7 last year? Just because you got lucky in one game against SC does not change a program around. I hear this year after year from you baby blues. "UCLA is on the rise"..."Next year is our year" But it never ever materializes.... You speak about the greatness of your team but what happened against Florida State? 44-27? 31 points in the second half! Against a 7-6 team that lost to Maryland and North Carolina State. What about that killer defense and those fast DE's? Where were they? I'm totally ok with optimism but let's be realistic as well. You beat SC in an ugly 13-9 win with a lucky interception when SC was about to score for the win. There was no beat down. A beat down is 66-19 or as Florida State did 44-27. 13-9 is fluke. But you're right about one thing, SC is looking forward to next year's game.

Posted by: Rothstar [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 8, 2007 09:35 AM

Let's also clear the air about Brian Price. Yes, SC recruited him but he's not the end all be all. It's not like we're talking about Joe Mcknight or Everson Griffen or some other 5 star game changer. Price was ranked #64 nationally. SC has 8, count em 8, players ranked higher than Price in Rivals 100. Trust me, SC is not losing any sleep over it. You're making a much bigger deal out of this than you should...

Posted by: Rothstar [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 8, 2007 09:59 AM

Now I know you've lost your mind... 5 star flops?

Luther Brown - sophmore recovering from back surgery
Antwine Perez - transferred b/c he was facing sitting behind the freshman player of nation - Taylor Mays.
Allan Bradford - played as a freshman - looking to start as a sophmore.
Jeff Byers - will start this year after dealing with back problems.
Stafon Johnson - just a sophmore
CJ Gable - started for SC as a freshman after beating out 5 other candidates
Keith Rivers - 3 year starter. All American.
Jeff Schweiger - will dominate once he has the opportunity to play at another school

There no duds there. Get a clue.

You want to talk about a team that produces a bunch of duds on the next level, that would be UCLA's basketball program....

Posted by: Rothstar [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 8, 2007 01:46 PM

A few more facts:

First downs: Sc 14, UCLA 15
Third down conversions: SC 6-17 (!)
Rushing yards - 55, or 1.8 ypg

This "luck" defense for SC's most bitter loss in years is just thin and weak. Just ask Carroll, who said of the game: "Give credit to UCLA. They made it a difficult day and kept us from doing what we wanted to do. We had no rhythm. We did not anticipate this happening."

No luck. Better game plan. A team with greater desire.

Also, in recruiting: UCLA had 10 scholarships to give due to the fact that they have 20 starters returing next year (20!), and seemingly finished down in the recruiting rankings for next year's class. But look a little closer, because it's not about quantity this year for the Bruins, but quality. Take the rating of those 10 players and suddenly UCLA is ranked #8 based on their average score of 3.60.

Again, USC is the dominant program in college football today, you'd have to be on crack to deny that. But it's just simply indefensible to say that the Bruins did not gain a huge chunk of momentum back in this rivalry. It was the biggest win in the rivalry--for either school--since OJ did his last-minute scamper to beat the Bruins in the late 60s.

--Number of years since last beating your crosstown rival: 7
--Final score of game: 13-9
--Nubmer of games since USC was last held to less than 20 points: 63
--Beating a team that was looking past you to an imminent date in Glendale, Arizona for the National Title Game....

well, you know the word.

What's so much fun about this is actually seeing you Trojan guys actually so WORKED UP. Relax guys, if you are that good, then you will beat us next year. Until then, the Victory Bell remains painted blue and gold and sits snug and warm in Westwood.

Posted by: kcd1 at March 8, 2007 09:43 PM

Dude, you really want to start talking basketball? SC? Seriously, I'm not even going to go there, as it's just laughable. That's like Sean Connery's classic line in the Untouchables: "Just like a [Trojan] to be bring a knife to a gun fight."

Stick with football, you have a legitimate argument there. Going basketball with a bunch of UCLA posters is not a wise move.

Posted by: kcd1 at March 8, 2007 09:51 PM

You're basketball team sucks too. Outside of John Wooden era what do you have? 1 championship? So does Maryland.... It's been a has-been overrated program for 30 years.

Nice game last night. Way to go into the tourney hot! That Affalo is a hell of a clutch player - 3 points, 0 rebounds, 5 fouls. SOLID!!

Posted by: Rothstar [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 9, 2007 10:59 AM

kcd1 -

That was a funny post! Seriously, I liked it.

I'm still laughing...

BTW - the bell is not painted blue and gold, it's baby blue and gold...

Take care and what time does the UCLA err CAl game start tonight?

Posted by: Rothstar [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 9, 2007 11:51 AM

Still haven't received an answer to "How many of Carroll's players have made All Pro?" One ? Two ?

Amazing how few of his players excel in the NFL considering all the top recruting classes for the last 5 years.

Posted by: Jay at March 9, 2007 12:56 PM

We'll see what happens in the actual tournament next week. Granted, we did choke last night, and if the Bruins don't get their heads out, their #2 seed (which is what they will get) will be a waste. The Big Dance is all about momentum. That's why a team like Cal, at 16-16, actually has a shot of earning the auto bid if they can win two more games.

Once SC wins it's first national championship under Floyd (which they actually might have a shot at doing if he keeps up the excellent recruiting), you will have earned the right to get cocky about basketball. Until then, please, have a little respect for what Howland has done at UCLA. Believe me, I'm nervous. What with the new on-campus arena, Floyd, and the killer recruiting classes he has coming in, it makes me sick to think SC could actually be good in more than just football.

Feel free to knock Afflalo--he had a bad game. But again, he's a legitimate first-team All-American who had scored in double figures for some 28+ before last night. Everyone has an off night, including Kobe.

The real show begins next week. That's what I love about the Big Dance: USC has the ability and momentum to make it to the Elite 8, as UW did last year. So does Oregon. UCLA actually has a shot to win it all if they get their act togehter. We will see. It should be fun.

Jay, my little man -

I've proved you wrong a long time ago... I'll spend one more minute putting you back in your hole.

I have a homework assignment for you. Go to the following link and give me a full report of USC trojans in the pros. This way you'll know something when you try to blog and statisfy your dying obsession with USC football and the NFL...

http://graphics.fansonly.com/schools/usc/graphics/media-guides/06-footbl/09fbguide208.pdf

41 trojans in the pros. 2 in the pro bowl. 29 trojans drafted from Carrol's teams.

Not bad in 5 years!! Thanks for pointing that out Jay!

Posted by: Rothstar [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 9, 2007 04:26 PM

Rothstar,

I love baby blue! If I recall, it was the color of the sky Booty was staring up into when he was laid flat on his back on the Rose Bowl turf last December.

Seriously man, your Trojans are up by 10 right now at the half against WSU. They've got the big Mo right now, and are (gulp) my pick to win the Pac 10 tourney. That should notch you guys up from an 8 seed to a 6.

I'm a little shocked the sports columnists still have the Bruins as a #1 seed in the West, but the gods do favor the elite programs. Bottom line: seeding won't matter unless the Bruins can quickly get back to thoroughbred form. And frankly, having them a #2 seed in the West could actually help their chances.

Posted by: kcd1 at March 9, 2007 09:40 PM

Hopefully some of these shortsighted posts are being reviewed by the posters. I didn't even expect there to be any negative reaction to Coach Scott's hiring and didn't read the reactions.

In the future, check out the backstory a bit more before making such a harsh judgement. Obviously Brian had better insight about what Eric would bring to the program. Gimpythepimp really looks foolish right now.
