More answers
A few more questions trickled in, so here's a few more answers.
Why is it you mention Texas, Ohio, Notre Dame and USC when mentioning NCAA sanctions - but not the ucla basketball teams under Wooden?
It was a general question about the NCAA, and I took the most recent examples to make my point. I was in a football context, so I listed the top football schools.
Regarding the basketball starting lineup, is it feasible that Love could move to the power forward and Mata remain at center?
I don’t think putting Love at the four and Mata at center is what the coaching staff thinks will give UCLA its best lineup. I also don’t think Love is coming to UCLA to play power forward, and that is not where he will best be utilized.
Aren't all commitments non-binding, at this point? Why is this one being differentiated?
Indeed, all commitments are non-binding, but usually within a few hours of making a commitment, a player does not say he is still open to being recruited and then lists schools he’d like to still visit.
Brigham Harwell seemed a bit overweight and slow last season. Is he in better condition this season, is he being challanged for the postion?
I don’t think he was overweight, but for the second year in a row he was having problems with his ankle. He looks like he has good feet now, but he needs to make it through training camp without his usual dings. He can be a standout player if he is healthy, but he needs to remain healthy.
What brought about this new recruiting philosophy from the staff? I don't recall the staff ever pressuring recruits to commit before. Whose decision was it to employ this tactic?
I think UCLA is trying to be more aggressive in recruiting, and that begins with identifying players early on and going strong after them. That philosophy started a few years ago with Eric Bieniemy, and just continued. It allows UCLA to be done with the majority of its recruiting by the time the season arrives, But the danger, to me, is that enough scholarships are not available in case other players, who may be more talented, want to wait until late in the process and make a decision.
And if 90 percent of the scholarships are used by the beginning of September, how hard can a staff push someone who, originally, was not interested in UCLA, but all of a sudden becomes interested because of a great season.
As for the decision to employ this tactic, to me, it comes from Dorrell. He runs the program, so if he doesn’t like decisions and actions, he should change them.

I think its so funny people mention Sam Gilbert. Wasn't that almost 30 years ago? The problems with SuC and OSU are within the last 5 years! Cheat On ol' $c...

Just because it happened 30 years ago doesn't mean it didn't happen Scottielew.
If you guys wouldn't bring up the purchased BBall titles every 30 seconds to cover the fact that you have a no talent football team, I guess people would let it die.

I was a student at UCLA 35 years ago & I saw the car Walton was driving. If he was "purchased" he came REAL cheap.
If there was a SINGLE case of a player coming to UCLA during that period solely, or even primarily, because of whatever goodies Sam Gilbert may have been providing I am not aware of it. Certainly it was not anywhere close to what McKay's boosters were providing the USC football team at the time. We won because the best players wanted to come play for the best coach. Period.

Brian,
If I've not mistaken, Love has been quoted on multiple occasions saying that he was a 4 and that he would be playing power forward at UCLA. Are your statements based on something Kevin or UCLA has said, or is it just a hunch?
Posted by: Andrew at June 26, 2007 08:12 PM
I've never got an indication Kevin Love would play the four.

Bill Walton drove a lousy car while he was at UCLA because the rest of the money he got from Sam Gilbert and pals went up in smoke, if you know what I mean.

What is the latest on Jrue Holiday? His trip to Washington? Any future trips to other schools planned ?

The funny thing about the typical trojan memory is that they forget Gilbert was handing out freebies to John McKay's football teams during that time (allegedly). Did any of those teams in the 60's and 70's get put on probation?
I think the NCAA acts differently now than they did then. Unless, of course, Reggie Bush is involved.

mrybill,
Just because you weren't aware of it doesn't mean it didn't happen. Check the facts. Here is a story posted on the official UCLA English Department website:
http://www.english.ucla.edu/ucla1960s/7071/austin12.htm
And here's another one from Yahoo:
http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/news?slug=dw-uclalegacy040206&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
Read both of those stories and then see if you still think Sam Gilbert provided things "not anywhere close to what McKay's boosters were providing the USC football team at the time," as you stated.
